  1. Re: rank and age Pretty much spot on. There is some variation with Branch of Service and Country of course but for a foundation, those are solid numbers. ~Rex
  2. Re: Will Stronghold She's definitely strong and tough. Hell, for some reason this thread is interesting me, SO, some time over the weekend, I'll do up some 6e stuff for the Movie. ~Rex
  3. Re: rank and age One can always lie about their age. Still happens. In general though figure Officer Ranks Require a Degree ....so 3-4 years above minimal enlistment. NCO ranks are different because you can start as an e3 right out of boot if you got the JROTC from high School...... As for anything else you can call an actuall recruiting office, ask for the NCO to give you a run down on Time In Grade. ~Rex
  4. Re: The Question (Rene Montoya/ DC) Smokes still doable......Especially if you come up to the 175 or 200 point bracket. The Question, even Montoya, has always been a pretty tough cookie, capable of holding their own against crowds of skilled mooks and having the ring leaders go ..."OH CRAP!" when they showed up. Still, very viable build for the 150 level. I'd tweak a few of the stats a touch but then I'm a rabid Question Fan that even owns more then a few of the Charleston issues. ~Rex
  5. Re: The Question (Rene Montoya/ DC) Nothing for the Gas/Fog effect itself though? Other then that I like the build so far at this point level. Com needs to be higher though if you are staying 5e. She has no issues getting dates what so ever. ~Rex
  6. Re: Will Stronghold Scale up. Start Will at Teen Champions level, give them the Full Blown deal because Commander, apparently can Pimp Slap things bigger then Godzilla. Can't fly though the Wife has to haul him around, heh. ~Rex
  7. Re: The worst Retcon of all time Heh, that tombstone is probably one of the few things that hasn't moved. Big difference between their writers now, and their writers then. ~Rex
  8. Re: Will Stronghold All super hero's should be Somewhat tough. Otherwise you get KO'ed by little old ladies. ~Rex
  9. Re: Will Stronghold Warren's Easy .......Just about everyone in that Movie is Easy but the GIRL....that is a tough Power suite to work up if you really think of it. The : "Maybe a multipower with the Change Environment, Transform, Engtange, Herbopathy (telepathy or mind control, only vs. plant minds) and then a lot of points in the Power: Plant Manipulation skill." Is the correct direction to go. Wouldn't doubt it that if you scale up from a Teen Champions game with her, that she ends up one of the more powerful people in the campaign. Especially since her mood seems to affect the world around her. ~Rex
  10. Re: Will Stronghold Heh....very good point. ~Rex
  11. Re: The worst Retcon of all time Marvel has a problem moving forward with their Iconic merchandise though. They have shown (In Max stories with Appropriate age Nick Fury and Frank Castle), that it can be done, and done well. Problem is though since they have always been "The World Outside your Window", they are kind of stuck with those characters, so they have to update the origins every once in awhile and pray we nit Pickers don't jump on the Franklin Richards stuff and beat them to death with it. DC has shown, very well in fact that the Oldies are the Goodies. Timelines in comics has always been tough to do really if you ever have to tie into a real world reference. Some you can do it with, others, eventually it will catch up to you. It's a huge risk though to move a franchise out of the familiar, and into the "evolution of" format. They've tried that with Fantastic Four a few times. Folks don't attach to the un-familiar very well. ~Rex...thinks the shortpacked reference is pretty funny. Everything IS actually funnier, with Batman in it.
  12. Re: Will Stronghold Nah his casual stuff is pretty impressive, more then just lifting cheer leaders. Not kidding though if you take Taurus, and replace the Horns and the running with Flight you're pretty much done for a Standard level game, for a Teen Level, some RAR and a few stat (drop 50 to 40, shave 5 off a few other things) and skill drops and you're still in the ballpark. Really not a very complicated character. Harder to do his Girlfriends powers then anything else in that movie. ~Rex
  13. Re: Will Stronghold Like I said, it's very PS 238 ........Also, it is an oddly entertaining movie and well, Bruce Campbell is in it as well. Would make for a good Teen Champions sort of setting. ~Rex
  14. Re: The Question (Rene Montoya/ DC) She's very obsessive. Sinks in the teeth never let's go. Could work that up to a 5 pointer since it was always an annoying trait when Vic was still kicking. ~Rex.....Big fan of Vic Sage aka Charles "Charlie" Victor Szasz. Montoya's growing on him though since they started doing more "Question Stuff" and less "Look a Lesbian, we're HIP and Cool with it, Look, More Lesbians!!" stuff.
  15. Re: Will Stronghold Better to watch the movie. Heck it's worth watching for a good chuckle and the fact that Linda Carter is still hot. Essentially speaking, Will Stronghold would end up as, a Flying Brick, with a Shockwave punch to the floor. You could easily build him by taking the 6e2 stats for Taurus, remove the horns and running, give him flight, and a focus suit for more resistant protection because he doesn't come off as very bullet proof in the movie, but he can smash hard thing without pulping his hands. The STR for Taurus is about right to......Drop him down to Teen Champions level, move the supporting stats down, add an activation roll to some of his schticks and you can make it fit easily enough. ~Rex
  16. Re: Will Stronghold Heh, PS 238 the movie? Actually, any of the stats for anything in that movie would be pretty easy to come up with. No one's really all that complicated. ~Rex
  17. Re: A Storeowner's First Impression Just give me a book I can use to backhand a buick off the highway and I'm happy. ~Rex
  18. Re: A Storeowner's First Impression While I still would have preferred a slip cover edition (At the combined MSRP), with the Colors being reversed (That much Yellow would get anyone's attention a mile away), I have to say, after running a game now, that having the smaller combat and adventuring book to flip through for player rules questions is easier then it would be if it were one giant book (Though Rex likes his one Giant Book). So no real grumbles about the two book set up really. Still need to go out and get the Advanced and Basic thingies so I can start with a soft back beating and escalate to backhanding someone with 6e1. ~Rex
  19. Re: A Storeowner's First Impression Some interesting posts. I'll toss in mine, both good and bad. Also, I'll toss in my game creds to as a long term convention support flunky and demo guy for multitudes of other game companies, and their product both good and bad....So I'm looking at this not only as a long term fan of the Hero System that still clings to his 1st print run of Champions like the holy grail in the face of the heathen armies of d20 spin offs and what not, but as someone used to marketing and running a product for multitudes of different types of players, etc etc ....This is just a quicky after only having the books for 2 days....I'll have a follow up after some serious game play. The Good. This is easy. I like the rules changes, it smooths out a lot of plains really, while still making my shelves upon shelves of old game material still more then useful. Again Steve Long proves why a Smart, Dedicated Line developer is a GOOD THING. No gripes with any changes, since the one thing I have seen as a gripe from others is that they feel they are paying More to get the same they had previously, but if you have a good grasp of SCALE, it's easy to see this isn't so. The matching complications rules are nice, and the tool kit pop ups are handy as well. Game play is much faster as well, movement is smoother easier to translate, and power structure is more intuitive too. I'm also don't mind the cover which seems to be a stinking point for a lot of folks. From a marketing point of view, to those folks out there that seem to think more is better. More Glitz, More Glam, More foil covers. Not so. ICONIC, and simple, remains in the thoughts and minds longer, and stand out amongst the glitz and glam of the competing product a lot more. All I would have done differently, is reverse the colors. Maybe in the 6E revised. The Genre sections were a nice touch as well though I would have liked to have seen them beefed up a bit more, what was there was a great foundation presentation. The Bad: Worst "Construction" I have seen, (And I do demo work for Mongoose Publishing so I am used to the British "Explosion" as your book falls apart in your hands. (Though to be fair they fixed that issue and replaced all crappy product out of their own pocket)) for a COVER, yet. It's soft and Mushy, with the majority of the product having bubbled up covers and serious de-lamination issues on top of Pocks, Air Bubbles, Creases, Scarification, corners that look like a dog was gnawing on them and other mangling. Being that shade of blue doesn't help either with hiding any of the damage. NOW, to be fair to HERO and DOJ, I've seen this a LOT in Chinese printed product. The BINDING, seems to be as impervious as the binding used for FRED, which is a good thing. However. My now two day old copies of Volume 1 and 2, look three times as old and beat up as my BBB copy, or my Non Revised FRED which I HAVE used in hand to hand barfight combat. You backhand someone with a copy of Fred, they tend not to get back up. I bought the best looking copies I could get out of the boxes (And the hobby stores here ordered a LOT), and those boxes came from the Hobby Store with the best set of boxes. I don't know if the damage happened in shipping, or in distribution, but it's extensive, ugly, and doesn't market well for buying 80 bucks worth of books. Out of 50 copies of Volume 1 and 2; I went though, I only found 5, that weren't bubbled, scared, pitted, or in various stages of cover de-lamination. This wasn't just little damage you don't notice unless you go over it with a fine tooth comb this was glaring stuff you could see in any sort of light from any distance. The Ugly: Ouch this thing is expensive. Because I believe in supporting your Fine Local Hobby Store, I bought the books at one of the ones somewhat near me (merely a 150 mile round trip or so). A Slip covered package with books in it would have been much more preferable, because the Stores, aren't selling these things at the combined MSRP. To be honest, they are VERY unfamiliar with the Volume Structure, don't understand why there are a volume 1 and 2 Hard Back and what the Advanced and Basic Players books ARE, or what they are for, and no one is telling them. Still, you ARE getting quite a bit for your money, and there is very little fluff. It's pretty much all usable material. I still would have preferred though, ONE big arsed book, but from a marketing, printing, and binding point of view, I can see the thinking involved in splitting it the way they did. Glossy Pages. I will forever HATE them. I'll be the first person to line up to buy a high definition black and white copy written on the same paper as FRED, so I can tab, highlight, and pencil in notes and changes to my hearts content. I find anything written on glossy pages to be difficult to read, especially under CFL light, but that's mostly because I'm an old crabby biker and perhaps younger eyes are better. Not a big fan of having to wear latex gloves to read my game book to so that the Ink doesn't come off on my finger tips. Still though when I found a real light bulb to read by they read well enough and I am sure the newer generation prefers their "color tv" while those of mine, are perfectly content with radio drama. Not overly impressed with the art (except for the Pulp Stuff because Pulp is Rock Star) either though understand that comes from the viewpoint of a guy that simply doesn't care if ANY art is in his game books. I'm disappointed, the "Draw your Character" outline from the BBB days again wasn't in the books, but I can add those in easy enough anyway when I make my own character sheets as I inevitably have to do because my d20 players are incapable of understanding a character sheet unless every skill, talent, power, etc, is already on the sheet for them to see. Over all out of 5 stars, I give it a heavy 4.25, maybe a 4.5. Is it an improvement. Yes. Just fix that cover quality because one shouldn't be able to pick up a book that expensive, and roll it up like a newspaper. ~Rex
  20. Re: League of Extraordinary Gentlemen for 2008 Got to really know the Sci Fi Genre. If it helps a bit, just read this: http://www.batteredbox.com/JohnRFearn/IncunabularGoldenAmazon.htm One, Golden Amazon. Kudos to Sir Richard Burton as well. Was thinking of that myself but if you have Burton, do you REALLY need anyone else. Burton works exceedingly well in literature anyway, Riverworld for example. He would certainly qualify, even if he WAS a real person. As for the Harry Potters and Alex Riders out there. They are Assassinated out of hand, as reprisal for their stain upon both the book and movie industries. After all Bond needs to keep those skills Sharp right? ~Rex
  21. Re: League of Extraordinary Gentlemen for 2008 So, running along the original format, and sticking to Characters of an Origin related to the same format, as the original League, my Modern League, looks something like this. Simon Templar. James Bond. BlackShirt. Dr. Who Spring-heeled Jack. If you want to add some Women, which one should add at LEAST one, then Miranda (of Doctor Who fame), or Golden Amazon. ~Rex
  22. Re: League of Extraordinary Gentlemen for 2008 Come on you guys make it sound like the League was WRITTEN back in the 1800's. League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Roll Call. Mina Murray, Brahm Stoker, Dracula The Invisible Man, H.G. Wells, The Invisible Man Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde, Robert Louis Stevenson, Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde Alan Quartermaine, H. Rider Haggard, King Solomon's Mines Captain Nemo, Jules Verne, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea Honorable Mention To: Campion Bond, Alan Moore Mycroft Holmes, Sire Arthur Conan Doyle, The Adventure of the Greek Interpreter C. Auguste Dupin, Edgar Allen Poe, The Murders in the Rue Morge Pollyana Professor Selwyn Cavor Quong Lee John Carter Major Blimp And a host of others.......... Now of course at the time the Comic, there were and obviously have been movies. I think though the point of the comic was having the great Hero's and such of the Novels to come forth. They could have used movie versions, but they stuck to Literature. So, if you were doing Modern League, Why break with Tradition? Tradition is Part of the feel of the League in the First place Right? ~Rex
  23. Re: League of Extraordinary Gentlemen for 2008 This has been an interesting thread so far, but I was thinking, Shouldn't the Choices, be relegated to "british commonwealth-esque" folk, of actual Literature (That's Novels, not comic books/Movies/tv shows), Much like the Original League? That would be keeping within the Structure of the Original Work right? Would certainly be an interesting Mix of folk with those parameters. ~Rex
