  1. My group is less fans of 4-color, so ours was a stand-alone universe in that we played 4-color champs. a few times, and after DC never went back, the world never was fully spelled out in great detail so the world evolved as such and it was no big deal. (It would have sucked if I had done a ton of work on a 4-color world and then we liked DC better, lots of changing). As far as my "i don't like this so make it go away from future products." I guess it did come off that way. I guess I should have said "In his current 800 pt. form, I'm not a fan of him being the mascot." I don't have much problem with the idea behind the character given (like Steve said) he fit in the DC universe more (no teleporting tech.; etc.). But he's just too "god-like" in his current form (even if the gun pool became non-teleporting, but just a standard VPP or what-have-you). The champions team (Ironclad, Defender, etc) are based on the same points a standard character would be based on, so I'd assume that HoJ if used, would be the same points that a standard DC character would be. I'll assume this will be 350 for a super-DC campaign, or less for a street-level type.
  2. Beetle summed it up pretty well! I am finding I'm really in the minority in just about everything I've posted lately. (Art in the Hero Books; Multipower/EC; Dark Champs; etc). Our group of players and I share 75% of the same opinions, so I've always thought I was in the mainstream thinking here, I'm finding out otherwise! Can everyone agree at least that a 800pt. "gun-teleporter" may not be the BEST mascot for the Dark Champions books though? I'm not saying DC is all guns. I think Punisher, (certain titles) of Batman, Nightwing, are all good examples. Spider-Man I wouldn't personally consider DC. He rarely fights too many just out-and-out psycho characters. Venom is pretty much crazy, but only directs that hatred at Spidey. Carnage is out and out crazy, good DC character actually; Maybe the LIzard. I haven't read many current spidey adventures lately. But regardless. I'm just hoping for a little more appropriate mascot of the DC line... Preferrably someone who costs less than say 250 total pts.
  3. I was aware that Steve wrote the book, I didn't know he played that character through all those experience points though... Doesn't change a whole lot though. While I DO have a problem with 800+ points for a DC setting, I have MORE of a problem with the concept. Warping guns in from another dimension to use in combat is just not DC stuff. It's pretty 4-color to me. Batman, or Nightwing is about as 4-color as I'd want to get in a Dark Champs. setting. I'm a HUGE Punisher fan, so I like the idea of doing the level just above the "modern" era. I mean, Lethal Weapon is good and all, but I'm personally loving the idea of super-powered Lethal Weapon. Punisher is good because he interacts with the 4-color guys, lives in their world, and fights against some pretty tough guys (where he needs to call in 4-color backup), but the setting is grim and dark. The DC book as a whole was just awesome. It hit on exactly what I wanted 90% of the time. Harbinger just seemed "out of place" in that book. I mean, he just screamed "too 4-color" for me, even though his personality and motivation may have fit in the DC world, he didn't...
  4. I was flipping through my DC book last week, and saw the Harbinger of Justice. I hope that guy doesn't make any return appearances in any DC books. He's what, 800 pts? Way too high for any dark-champions game I'd be running. He has a Variable Power Pool for his guns which he warps in from another dimension to use. What do I even say to THAT? Dark champions don't teleport guns from anywhere. They pull them out of their holsters. Am I in the minority on THIS issue too? I just would like dark champs. to be very Punisher-esque. Punisher fighting a low-powered super is ok, but Harbinger is just too hokey for my tastes...

    Super Names

I wrote a name generator (which does supers pretty well) in VB. I'll upload it tonight. It basically takes a "supers.dat" text file which consists of a "prefix" and "suffix" and picks one at random from each table and throws them together and allows output to a text file. I have dat files for items, supers, and some stuff I was messing around with. -Chris
  6. Here Here Brick! Stereotypes in comics rule (and make things easy for a GM) Everyone knows: -All Germans are Nazis -All Italians are mobsters (I, by the way, am Italian) -All aliens are evil and bent on the domination of Earth -The more ugly something is the more evil it is (not always true the other way around though, see below) -All police are Irish -All Russians hate anything non-russian (and are named Boris, or Ivan) -All techies wear glasses -All gorgeous women are airheads -All inner city gang members are Black or Mexican -Anyone who uses magic is a withered away old man with a LONG white beard -The barbarian always wields a weapon larger than most of the other PCs -The more evil the girl the more attractive they are (c'mon Bamusa the She-devil always is smoking hot w/ little red horns and giant bat-wings that everyone just ignores) "Dude, your girlfriend is HOT!" "Yeah, I know" "'Cept for them giant bat-wings though" "What wings?"
  7. I haven't tried the new point totals out, but I did see the new "official" standard of Supers is 350 pts. vs. the old standard of 250. How's this work power-level wise? I would assume a starting character under the 350 is more powerful than the 250 (haven't playtested much of 5th edit. for Supers yet). Why the switch? I found 250 starting for a Champs. campaign to be good. I understand I can still do 250, I'm just curious if there was a deliberate decision and why...
  8. I never saw the old thread; BUT, I really hope "Terror Inc." as a name has nothing to do with it. I'm neither defending nor attacking Prof. Muerte, I just don't want this to be a politically correct decision about Terrorism, or stereotyping Latinos or anything else... I would hate for us to HAVE to stay politically correct to appease the people who may or may not get offended. One of the (few) things I LIKE about the new direction of D&D is the Book of Vile Darkness... It is a kickback to all the oldschool 1st edition demons/devils/truely evil stuff. The book is out there and if you want to use it, good, you now have the option to pick up an "official" book with "official" rules on topics not touched in a LONG time. I haven't picked up the Newest Champs. books w/ characters in them, but I hope we're NOT being PC all over the place. (I'm REALLY waiting for the 5th version of Dark Champions, but we'll see...) In M&M (mutants and masterminds) they have the "White Knight" (basically a super-powered KKK guy) who actually fits into a SLIGHTLY gritty 4-color campaign w/o being comically stupid, nor "Punisher" realistic either. I liked (in theory) the Widows and Orphans book for Hero. So I know they can hit on "taboo" material as they've done it before.
  9. I guess I'm just responding to Trebuchet's: ---- "The very fact that so many characters are built without Elemental Controls is pretty good evidence in my mind that ECs are not inherently over-efficient. If they were abusive or unbalanced every character would have one; it's not hard to rationalize a theme. {"Ninja abilities? Powered Armor? Sure, go ahead.")" ---- Not true. Trying to remember characters from the through the old Champs. books brings back memories of 20/20 Armor Spandex Suit; Disadvantage: Mesmerizingly Beautiful (when the character has a 10 Comeliness); Everything built w/ EC and Multipowers; and all sorts of rules raping. -Chris
  10. I'm not sure I agree w/ you on all those points Shrike. By removing EC, you can still do everything that you stated, the only difference is that you have to pay a little more for the same powers. I do see your point about the way that "Ice Powers" in others games has a list of static effects (or maybe a variable set of power stunts or whatever), but if Ice-Boy can shoot an EB (Ice blast), have extra running (ice slides), and some armor (ice skin) and takes it all through a EC, and Fire-Girl takes similar stuff but w/o an EC, they really are about the same power strength except that Iceboy saves some points. I guess it's just a matter of taste, but I am all for keeping Multipowers, and yanking EC entirely. It helps those who take powers like ice, fire, someone earlier said super soldier (I would never allow that one personaly). In the case of Spiderman, I guess he could get away with some Dex, Strength, Clinging, Danger Sense maybe, all in the EC, but I wouldn't let him take his swinging or entangle through an EC since it's not an inherent power of him, but it's a device (which he's already getting a point break on since it's through a focus).
  11. Yeah I'm not a big "drain" user as a GM. I also go by the mentality that I rarely need EC since I'm making a villain, and I can just make them how I want and not have to point-pinch.
  12. I did see some of the free stuff, I was just saying that the way M&M took off I feel has to do in large part to it's artwork, and it may help Champs/hero as well. I do agree w/ the cost would skyrocket thought.
  13. I like the focus for the multipower... That better describes my "device/equipment". Well, I guess if it's not just me, maybe we can let Steve know. I mentioned it to him at Origins last year that in the old champs. books of heros/villains, everyone and their brother had either an EC or a Multipower (or both), just for the sake of having it. -Chris
  14. *LOL* I *KNEW* someone would say that. I shouldn't have put Spidey up there. How about uh... Captain America, or Dare Devil. I think you guys know what I am getting at though.
  15. I'm sure everyone's aware of the stir Mutans and Masterminds is making. Heck, I've played Champions since about 10-12 years ago, not playing anythign other than HERO since being exposed to HERO, and even I picked up M&M. I think what made ME buy it was the art/layout/production. It's a pretty small book under 200 pages, but it cost $30-$35 retail (I got it off of amazon for less, but still) which in my opinion is pricey for something like that, but it's a very pretty book to look at, and makes it more "fun" to read it. It made me want to buy the game. It's like the art/production made the game draw me in more. It brought back a spark of when I was a kid buying new RPGs for the first time. (The reason I bought Champions was the nice color cover of Seeker about to be crushed by DD). I guess my point is that it'd be nice to have some color and more comic-style artwork in the Champions/Hero books. I know they tried to go "comics" with that Fuzion Champions (whatever it was called) back a few years ago, but that made a lot of people made due to the Image-style of drawing where all the women had gigantic... assets, and would bend in that impossible pose where they showed off their breasts and buttocks at the same time. The art in M&M is very comic-book w/o being degrading to woman, or being childish/poor-manga. Is it just a matter of printing costs to try and keep the hero books down? I'd pay and extra $5-$10 to have some more stylish art in the book. I don't know how these things work, but glossy pages are nice (maybe they didn't do it cuz it'd crank the 5th ed. core book up to $60-$75 if it was glossy, I dunno.) I'm just making an observation.
