  1. Re: Mind Control and Mental Illusions Creating light always seemed kind of tacked on. Light isn't an Image, it's Light. Seems more appropriate for Change Environment to me. I know RAW it's Images, but again, Light isn't an Image. What I see: Images affects multiple people, one sense at a time. MI affect multiple senses, one person at a time. It's the same power made to work two different ways for no good reason.
  2. Re: "Outsider" perspective on Hero System Not necessarily.
  3. Re: Mind Control and Mental Illusions Mental powers overall seem to occupy a weird niche between generic effect and sfx. I'm kind of big on the idea of cutting down on needless Mental versions of similar powers. I can't see the utility of Ego Attack being separate from EB or RKA either.
  4. Re: "Outsider" perspective on Hero System Seems like a winner there. I will say I'm capable of making characters that are just too downright weird to fit well in the system as well.
  5. Re: Mind Control and Mental Illusions Still seems like we have two powers that essentially do the same thing though.
  6. Re: Really quite crazy campaign idea.... Sounds fun. I'd play it. Fantasy with Super Powers is one of my favorite uses for HERO, actually.
  7. Re: "Outsider" perspective on Hero System I have a little problem communicating sometimes, and had I thought any regular HERO players were going to read that post, I might have worded things a bit more diplomatically. The thing is, HERO doesn't quite do Universal, it does HERO. It has a very specific framework and it's a great game, I never said it wasn't. But what HERO does best at the end of the day is HERO, and I think other senior members of this same board who love the game quite dearly have said as much. My examples were bad, and I apologize for that.
  8. Re: "Outsider" perspective on Hero System I'd like to point out that I have read it, but 1) It is a very big book and 2) I have a lot of other games to remember as well.
  9. Re: "Outsider" perspective on Hero System I do post on this board too guys.
  10. Re: Power Null Just as some thoughts on it... The Haitian doesn't seem to have to control the power directly or know someone is there to use it. He loses out on anyone with positive powers. So no healing, no being teleported, etc. It deactivates when he is unconscious. He's in no way immune to just regular bullets. Side Note: Is it possible to combine Damage Shield and Area of Effect?
  11. This is a pretty simple concept, but one I am both fond of and have struggled with in the system. I'm sure the solution is something basic, but even then, it'd be good to have someone eyeball the points. I'm fond of characters with linked damage. Some examples: Magician and familiar: If you hurt either the magician or the familiar, both take equal damage. Phylactery: The character has some object with his life force bound up in it. If it gets damaged, he's damaged too. I have a specific character in mind, and I can't really do him justice. I'd like to call out that this is supposed to be a bad thing (can get hurt by relatively defenseless thingie getting hurt), so I don't get my weakness represented as a 500 pt power or something. Thanks guys!
  12. Re: Hammerspace Either a HTH attack with Variable Special Effects and Physical manifestation, or Energy Blast with same, or RKA in Stewie's case, or Multipower, depending on how many effects they can pull. The standard hammer from nowhere is a relatively mundane HTH attack.
  13. Re: Mind Scan confusion Where does it say PCs have to be Human minds? The default is human, but I don't see where it's required.
  14. Re: Mind Scan confusion I greatly enjoy the Class of Minds rule. That's it. Carry on.
  15. Re: Working with Multiform I do love playing characters that have extreme differences between their heroic and non-heroic identities.
  16. Re: THE ULTIMATE BASE -- What Do *You* Want To See? Well, this seems like a stupid request, but I'd like to see a paragraph or two somewhere that talks about difference between a formal Base and someplace the character just lives, at what point I stop just having an apartment and start having a formal Base, and what it means if I don't choose to buy a Base. Stupid request, but something I'd like to see.
  17. Re: Working with Multiform To me, Multiform seemed best used when the character's normal and superheroic identities are extremely different. Bruce Banner and the Hulk would be what I use Multiform for, for instance.
  18. Re: Mind Control and Mental Illusions I've always thought Mental Illusions should just be folded into Images, but what do I know? MI covers perception, MC covers beliefs. For the most part, both will result in similar actions, with only slight degrees of variation between each other. MC will require a much higher roll to than MI to achieve the same effect in some cases. For example, making someone perceive they are surrounded by enemies with MI only requires a roll of +10 over EGO, while making someone believe the same with MC would require +20. Similarly, making someone perceive themselves as on fire, and later remember really being on fire should need +20, while getting the same effect for MC should require +40. MI is also telepathic by nature. Having some woman screaming "Covered With Scorpions!" in your ear probably works as a tipoff. Interestingly, the two powers will have different effects as far as they are described. It's way easier to tell a player what their character percieves rather than what they believe.
  19. Re: Various Powers at Edge of System I'm not the best guy for this job, but I'll give it a shot. [*]A power that resurrects you after you have died, which has NO way of being prevented, no "True Death" Resurrection with no loophole. Your GM agrees what an appropriate loophole is, and I consider "no loophole" to be acceptable in some cases. a lot of players and GMs tend to forget there are also such things as technical character death such as being stranded in space or irrevocably banished to another dimension. Now if nothing like that is possible or a character is completely immune to that happening, then yeah, there needs to be a True Death Exception, but otherwise having Resurrection work either way seem fine. [*]Mental Speech to any individual regardless of range or prior contact. You just think of the person you want to communicate mentally and boom, you are. (Assume a willing participant) Looking at it, I have to say no. [*]Your eyes glow, providing enough illumination for you and others to see in the dark by. This effect continues even after your character has died. I think if you buy the power as Inherent, then it it won't stop if you die. [*]You want to make it rain over the whole city. Megascale, +1/4. Balance it out with a Focus or Gradual Effect. Really cheap actually. [*]You want to make it rain everywhere on earth. Megascale, +1 1/4. make it a big obvious, immovable focus with limited charges. [*]You can become completely invisible to all senses, including any equipment or clothes you are wearing, including weapons, including the use of powers. You and all your stuff are also desolid. You can also attack other people with your weapons normally, although your weapon cannot be seen (nor can the blood on it.) They cannot grab your weapon, as it is desolid, although it still does damage. Any bullets, paint, smoke etc flow completely through you. Buy Invisibility for all Sense groups, Buy Invisible power effects for all weapons and powers, buy Desolidify and buy Affects Real World for all attacks and similar powers. Doable, but extraordinarily expensive, for good reason. [*]You can project Images to every sense group. There are six or so basic Sense groups, plus the the Unusual group. I think 35 points or so, (10 for Sight Group, and 25 for all the other Groups), should cover it. Since most of the Unusual senses are simulated by another group, then they should be visible to those senses too. [*]You can project Images to every sense group, and anyone witnessing the Images have no chance at all to recognize the Image is a Fake. If your game uses characteristic maxima, you could buy a penalty to the PER of say -14 for 42 character points which would mean pretty much no one would be be able to make it. [*]You have a power, such as an Energy Blast, that cannot be Drained, Dispelled, or otherwise diminished or suppressed. Powers that are a candidate for persistent can be made Inherent, and those cannot be Drained, Disspelled, or Suppressed. However, I think some powers like Energy Blast are more appropriate for Uncontrolled, and thus are not eligible for Inherent. Thus, it depends on the power. [*]You cannot take damage or other negative effects (like pain or distractions) from the environment, regardless of where you are, nor do you have any needs for sustenance, food, air, sleep, and the like. Like Support+Various Defenses should work. Energy Defense for most hostile environments (lava) Physical for others (Acid, Planet of Broken Glass) Flash Defense for blinding or sensory overwhelming enviroments. May be expensive depending on the character. [*]Nothing you do costs Endurance. Buy Costs No Endurance for all powers. Will be expensive. [*]You can move a star with the power of your telekinetic mind. Buy lots and lots of TK strength. You need the expanded Strength chart first though. [*]You can teleport precisely anywhere - even exactly 3,832 miles, 187 feet, and 4.7763 inches away. Teleportation is already pretty exact. Buy it as a Multipower with some Megascale variants and you are good. [*]You can teleport some else against their will precisely anywhere - even exactly 3,832 miles, 187 feet, and 4.7763 inches away. Teleport, Usable as an Attack. [*]You wish to take an Energy Blast with not just No Normal Defense, but with No Defense - in others words, without needing to define and powers or circumstances as the defense. Not normally possible. any attack power has some kind of Defense. [*]The ability for a character's mind to jump back in time up to 2 minutes. The world is put back up to two minutes, but the character still knows what happened. The character is the *only* one who know what happened in the future timeline that now may not occur. No idea without making it insanely complicated. [*]What if it was up to two days? Longer? Extra Dimensional Movement seems to cover longer Time Travel okay. [*]Resurrection of friends or "non bad guys" who have died in an area in the past 30 minutes. Resurrection for Healing works on other people as well as your character. If the above are important you can just say it's blocked by someone being dead for more than thirty minutes, and take a -0 to -1/4 Limitation Does Not Work On Enemies, depending on how serious being able to not revive fallen foes is. [*]Performing two full actions simultaneously in a single phase. Such as teleporting into to an area and then using an Energy Blast. It's possible, although some actions are mutually exclusive. You can't shout orders and chant Incantations at the same time for instance. [*]Teleporting a visible item or visible piece or component of an item somewhere within sight, such as teleporting the plastique out of the bomb. Teleporting whole items is a function of Teleportation. If you are using it to Teleport chunks, then i would actually make it a Ranged Killing Attack with a teleport effect. [*]A power that makes the character receive a +2 to all rolls that they make. +2 overall Levels. Easy-peasy.
  20. Re: Help needed for awkward concept Physical Limit still a little wonky for the purpose. Maybe using them as Foci for powers. That brings in other issues though.
  21. Re: Cell Phone Ly Only in very rare cases. Since in 90% of cases Self-Only can't be used at range anyway, then it seems redundant. Not limiting, not worth anything.
  22. Right now, I'm sort of working on a HERO version of game with a similar setting to World of Darkness. Don't look at me like that. *coughs* Anyway, I've run into a bit of a snag. I'm trying to find a good way to mimic ghosts from the above mentioned system (Wraith: the Oblivion if anyone is familiar). One aspect of these types of ghosts are "Fetters", objects that were significant to the ghost in life, and bind them to the mortal world. I'm having some difficulty figuring how to put them in. The idea is that the ghost is supposed to protect these objects, or else risk negative consequences. The problem is I can't seem to find a Disadvantage that would be appropriate. Using Dependence doesn't really work, since these are unique items that the character can't really replace, so if any of the objects were actually destroyed would essentially be a death sentence for the poor character. I wouldn't want to do that, so the limitation would be worthless. Similarly speaking, Susceptibility seems a bit too off as well, as the character will only have the limited number of items. I'd really prefer to define it as a Disadvantage if I may, since the other inherent abilities of ghosts are really racking up the points. Being dead is frighteningly expensive. (135 pts for permanent Desolidification and Invisibility so I can have the power to Not Exist?)
  23. Re: Opinion Fluff: Game Philosophies Police do vary in comptence and willingness by locale. Police where I live are courteous and dutiful, and wouldn't hesitate to bring the full force of the law on someone. Just inside of town, no more than 15 or so miles away, you can't get a cop to get off their ass for love, money or doughnuts.
  24. Re: Game Play Concept: No Limitations Outside of the Superhero genre itself, you still get variant answers. Limitations do cut the cost of magic down such that you can mix decent spellcasters with more mundane characters in a Fantasy game. Ditto psychics or aliens in a Star HERO campaign. On the other hand, if you are playing a more historical Skills-oriented style of game, it wouldn't really have any impact at all.
