  1. Just sharing some information that others might like to have. I have been getting into cartography more lately and as a result have come across some resources that can be used for different genre's of HERO in VTT platforms. Note that these are useful in many different genres. If you need some maps for upcoming games, here are some places to look: Cartographers Guild Battle Maps section: (also check the Finished Maps section) https://www.cartographersguild.com/forumdisplay.php?f=57 I like some of these, specifically: https://www.cartographersguild.com/showthread.php?t=48412&p=428065#post428065 https://www.cartographersguild.com/showthread.php?t=48398&p=428000#post428000 https://www.cartographersguild.com/showthread.php?t=48323&page=2&p=427855#post427855 Deviant Arts: (warning: quite a bit of NSFW content here if you are not careful) https://www.deviantart.com and specific ones: https://www.deviantart.com/jcarlhenderson/favourites/57508884/rpg-encounter-maps https://www.deviantart.com/jcarlhenderson/favourites/57509128/fantasy-cartography https://www.deviantart.com/sapiento/art/Encounter-Map-Fallen-Statues-245055258 https://www.deviantart.com/torstan/art/The-Low-River-Map-Pack-172684106 Venatus Maps: (has paid and free content) The free encounter maps below also have all the pieces to build multiple maps for free. And even the paid stuff is good quality and low cost. https://www.venatusmaps.com/product-page/example-maps 2-Minute Tabletop: (has free and paid content, similar to Venatus in cost) https://2minutetabletop.com/product-category/free/ DM's Guild: (has free, pay what you want and paid content, link below is free/pwyw) https://www.dmsguild.com/browse.php?keywords=encounter+++free&x=0&y=0&author=&artist=&pfrom=&pto= Drivethru RPG (lots of cross here with DM Guild, may be a mirror or run by same people) https://www.drivethrurpg.com/browse.php?keywords=free+encounter&x=0&y=0&author=&artist=&pfrom=&pto= Drop any that you like below and enjoy the maps. - E
  2. Hello all, Two questions for the more seasoned GMs out there. 1. What map scale to you customarily use? I know it's suggested that 1" (hex) can be two meters. I'm seriously thinking of just making it a 1:1 ratio for ease of calculating map movements, range modifiers, etc. I realize that's it's up to the GM discretion, of course, but I'd love to hear your thoughts. 2. In preparing for your campaign, how do you do it? Do you create a Word/text document and just have it on a nearby screen? Being 52 years old, I love analog, so considering just printing out my session and putting it into a binder. Easier to reference back to previous sessions if I need to. 2b. Do you use bullet points in creating your campaign/session? I'm leaning towards this because we know that things always change within a game, so I figure it's easier to be more flexible this way. Of course, if there's any soliloquy that needs to be spoken, I could type it up word-for-word, etc. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!
  3. Version 1.1

Several years ago I wrote a terrain generator for SimCity 3000. It was later used to create terrains for Auran Trainz simulator. The code was never part of either of these software packages, but users could save the grey-scale output from my program and import it as terrain inside these other programs. Internally, the program uses a random mid-point displacement algorithm to generate the grey-scale bitmap you see in the middle of the program. A color-map bitmap in the same folder acts as a palette to render the grey-scale bitmap to the right-hand side of the program. The right-hand map is what you should save for your adventures. The size of bitmap (in pixels) is always a power of 2, plus 1. It's not multi-threaded, so the larger the output, the longer you wait. You can do whatever you want with the color output in any graphics editor. You can add cities, hide-outs, political boundaries, rivers, points of interest, and label the seas, bays, mountain ranges, beaches, and forests, all with simple graphic editing programs like Microsoft Paint.
  4. I'm looking for some kind of mapping software I could use to pair with a text based online Champions game. I plan on texting "turns" to players and using the map(s) for combat. Anyone done anything like this? Any suggestions or ideas are welcome. Also, if the map software can work on a cell phone would be a plus! Thanks.
  5. Some time ago in the Star Hero thread I pointed towards some of the amazing ships made with/for the game Space Engineers. Because we can always use maps. The developers continue to work on that, but all the while they made another project: Medival Engineers A sandbox about building stuff using medival technology. It includes a structural integerity simulation. Wich means if what you build is not statically sound (or get's comprimised by damage), London Bridge will come falling down. It was just released to early access yesterday. But some people already made a "helms deep" map using the game: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=394806372 I guess more stuff is comming. As well as video reviews of maps made by other people.
  6. This is The Only Fantasy World Map You'll Ever Need. It was going around on the face books yesterday and seems to have blown up overnight. Perhaps this is the map for the World of Generica?
