  1. Forgive my ignorance, but I am trying to make sure I really understand "Pulp".

I always thought it was more related to a specific time period, and I think about detective and damsels and such. I consider "Cthulu" pulpish.

But in trying to educate myself by reading some posts here and wikipedia I have seen mention of western pulp and sci-fi pulp, and read some examples of pulp that don't fiy my ideas, so I am assuming that my thinking is inaccurate.

Can anyone give me a better definition/"guidelines" for what Pulp is?

    Thanks!

  2. Re: Help for a new member

Multiform isn't really that complicated for the Ben10. Make the most expensive form and divide by 5.

So for example, let's say you make normal Ben and you've decided that Ben will be your "base" character. When you're done Ben comes out to 90 points, but you haven't bought your extra forms yet.

When building Ben and his other forms you have to follow the same rules and restrictions as all the other players. So if you said all characters would be 200 point Base and 150 points in disadvantages, all the forms of the multiform would have to follow the same rules. So a 300 point form would get a base of 200 points and have 100 points in disads. Ben would technically not need any disads, but I would add the ones that seemed appropriate.

When you start building the extra forms, start with the one that will be the most expensive first. You will take the most expensive form and divide it by 5 and this will be the cost Ben (as the base form) has to pay. So if your most expensive form will be 300 points Ben (your base form) will pay 60 points. Ben now costs 150 points (90 originally plus 60 points for his Multiform).

In order to double the number of forms you play 5 points for double the number of forms. So to go back to the example, right now Ben has paid 60 points for one form. for an extra 5 points he could have 2 forms (65 points total) for another 5 points he could have 4 forms (70 points total) etc. The other forms are built exactly like the first form and cannot exceed 300 points (using our example of the most expensive being 300 points).

I would also STRONGLY recommend Hero Designer.

This info helps alot. Reading the rules again after reading your post it made much more sense. Thanks for the info.

  3. Re: Help for a new member

    Welcome NateDog!

I'd offer to help but my characters are generally over the top. :)

    Hope all goes well!

Over the top characters are always appreciated too. I like looking at the powers and trying to see if I can figure out what they do. :)

By the way, I always enjoy your posts on the "Quote of the Day thread".

  4. Re: Help for a new member

NateDog' date=' you might find it easier to use some of the simpler premade characters in fights with you kids. Leave off the bits you don't understand. Let your kids only play good guys and always win (doubtless you know this already) until the rules are understood. then whoop on them! :) Ah me, thier learning curve will be amazing to watch.[/quote']

Yes, the kids always win....at first. Their main problem is not being able to decide what kind of hero they want to play. Thanks for the advice!

On a separate note, how do you get the multi-quote to work? Anyone?

  5. Re: Help with Character - Basilisk

    Agreed on the "Only in Hero ID". As soon as you go the Focus route, too many problems spring up;

In his creature form, is he stone like? You don't mention. If so, then most of Wyrm's suggestions fit well.

Something else you might consider, and it's tricky to play, is a whole bunch of knowledge skills "Only in Hero ID". It's the old "As the change came over him, strange thoughts and memories suffused his body..." shtick. He can recall moving through an ancient jungle say, or serpentine family members. Places that his creature form lived, worked, technology it was familir with. That gives you the option of going SF alien, alternate timeline (When Dinosaurs ruled the earth!) alien or magical/demonic alien.

He will be like a heavily armored snake or lizard.

I like the knowledge skill "only in hero ID" concept. Again, that is something I never considered (which is why I love this discussion board).

  6. Re: Help with Character - Basilisk

If you go with strength, don't give him much over human max -- I'd top it out at 25, myself. Armor would be fine. I'd also make the poison bite the transformation to stone. Here's an idea:

Stone Bite: Major Transform 5d6 (75 Active Points); Gradual Effect (1 Minute; -1/2), Restrainable (-1/2), No Range (-1/2), Limited Target ([slightly Limited]; -1/4)

I like that idea. I would not have thought of that myself. I also like the gradual effect. What does the restrainable mean? And is the limited target because someone has to be bitten first, or is it something else. I only have the Sidekick edition so far. I am going to have to put the Hero 5th ed revised on my Christmas list.

That's just a grab. Give him an extra limb (tail), perhaps ambidexterity (so he can use the tail with no penalty), then some Martial Arts -- Snake Style Kung Fu, perhaps. ;)

    More good ideas.

Swift, swift, swift. 18 minimum, perhaps 23-25. Plus CSLs. Ignore Harry Potter; make this thing a serious badass.

I was thinking more brick, but I like the idea of a bit less strength and a bit more speed. Thanks for the input.

  7. I have an idea for a character, but I need some help from anyone that is willing to offer assistance.

The character is a "mild mannered" museum worker or something similar. He discovers a stone claw that is hollowed out, and when he puts his hand in it he is transformed into something from Greek mythology. He is snake from the waist down and a lizard-like humanoid from the waist up.

So.....if the claw is separate from him until he puts it on, and then it turns into part of his body, is it an OAF, OIF, or something else?

Also, any thoughts for powers he could have. I want some super strength and armor, but I am also thinking a transformation to stone attack, maybe a poison bite, but after that I am at a loss. Any ideas?

How about a tail attack? Short range entangle by wrapping up the target in his tail?

I am also trying to decide whether he should be a slow, ponderous creature (like the Medusa from Clash of the Titans....uh...did I just date myself?) or should he be extra fast like the snakes in movies like Anaconda. I am thinking that will depend on how many points I have left.

    Anyway, thanks for the help.

  8. Re: What were the best Marvel titles of the 70's?

I know others have said it, but Marvel Two-in-One was my favorite. I have quite a few of them (sadly they are in "well-loved" condition meaning they have been read many many times). I also liked the comic just about him (The Thing), but the Two-in-ones were even better.

I have been a Thing fan all my life. I have figures, cars, a poster, a cardboard cut out (desk size). I liked most of the transformations he has gone through in the comics, but I cannot say I care for his looks in the new movies (yes, I know it looks more like the original lumpy Thing, but to me he looks like he has been standing too close to the Human Torch for too long).

My favorite "Thing" comic issues are him and the Sandman hanging out drinking beer.

I also used to be a huge fan of Alpha Flight, but I think that was in the 80's.

  9. I love all the threads and ideas here.

I just started with the Hero system and I started thinking about a "Danger room" campaign which will be similar to some of the Star Trek Next Generation episodes of the holodeck. You know, the ones where they think they get off the holodeck, but at the end of the episode you find out they were on the holodeck the whole time. So I will have numerous play sessions of increasing difficulty (the first one where they "leave" the danger room to go save the world, the last one where they realize they have been in the danger room the whole time).

This started me wondering about all the sneaky GM's out there, and what you have been able to pull over on the poor unsuspecting players.

I am looking for creative, inventive, mind-blowing trickery. I am not looking for stories about nasty unfair treatment of the characters.

So bring it on. Give me some good ideas, or just brag a little.

  10. Re: Help for a new member

    Wow.

I appreciate everyone's feedback and comments.

One of the things I like about this board is that everyone knows so many good links and they are not afraid to share them.

I will definately look into all the info. Thanks!

  11. This is actually my first post, so be kind.

I actually got hooked on this site through the "quote of the day" thread and the game mechanics seemed very interesting. I recently got a copy of Sidekick to get me started and I am looking for some help (I have two young boys that want to create superheroes so that is my main focus at this point).

So my question is, can anyone help me with how to create the following character knock offs (I am looking for general ideas, but also any quirks or things to make the character unique):

Dresdan (from the TV show Dresdan files) - I am guessing his hockey stick is an OAF, but is his drumstick one also, or just a "material" for a spell?

Ben10 (cartoon TV show) - I certainly don't need all 10 aliens, but how would you do Ben and two or three of the others. I am confused about the multiform rules so any additional info would be appreciated (okay, I have not taken the time to read them repeatedly yet, but like I said, I just got the book)

Iron Man - or any similar armor type hero. I get the concept, I am just looking for additional "powers" the suit may have besides flying and blasters, plus how different people would handle the armor value

Hobgoblin - lots of fun explody gadgets (rechargeable?), gauntlets, flying batcycle, etc.

I appreciate any ideas you may have. I look forward to reading your ideas and getting your feedback.
