  1. Re: CU question: See through super material?

Someone using one of these domes to establish a new underwater base might at any time accidentally uncover an ancient Lemurian technomagic device' date=' abandoned golem, or even a long-lost colony of Mole Men. Could make things interesting. :sneaky:[/quote']

Now that is a fun idea. If it is the heroes who find the dome and set up the base….they find interesting things while cleaning, building, etc.

Even more interesting is if the villains set up the domed base…unleash the thing from the past that Man was not meant to know and have to cal the heroes for help. Is it a trap or do the bad guys really need help…or both?

  2. Re: Hybrid Characters

In my current campaign I ruthlessly enforce niche protection. When I laid the high-STR smackdown on Plasmoid, I'd suddenly trampled all over the team brick's schtick. He was a little miffed. So now, the Martial Artist does not have more DEF or STR than the Brick in my game, and the Brick does not have more DCV than the Martial Artist -- no matter how they whine.

They whine more if another PC beats them at "what they do".

    This from another thread.

Is this the same as enforceing archetypes? THis is a similar ruling to one I was refering to earlier. This allows players to feel superlative . . . not just super. Is this common amoung GMs.

Not sure if I am trying to push the discussion in any given direction but I am intrigued by the responses.

  3. Re: Hybrid Characters

One of the questions I have gotten form various GMs is "If Legion [or whichever multipowered hybrid I am trying to offer up] already has the powers of a whole super team, why does he need to be in the Justice Friends?"

Is there a good answer to this from a GM perspective? Most of the answers in this thread seem to talk about players and their preferences. I wonder if people might comment from the GM perspective. Is designing adventures for hybrids (as part of a team) more difficult than for archetypal characters? "I have Speedy Guy caught in the near unbreakable web of slowness. . .but wait! He can also shrink small enough to slip between the threads . . . Drat his surprising versatility!"

  4. Re: Hybrid Characters

One of the things I like about playing supers is the potential to be the best at something. MegaMuscle Man is built to be the strongest person on the planet. Then in the same group you have Superlative Guy that is strong fast and throws laser bolts and Humongous Girl who can turn into anything that is really big and really strong. In a group do archetypes allow or encourage individual heroes to shine in a particular area, where as hybrids make for too much duplication of specialty?

This is the most common reason I have heard for restricting hybrids.

  5. The Battlesuit thread had begun to discuss "hybrid" characters – characters that fit into more than one basic archetype…in this case both battlesuit/martial artist and battlesuit/mentalist were mentioned.

I was wondering about how various GMS looked upon "hybrid" characters. Do you prefer characters that conform pretty much to one archetype or are you comfortable with characters that have lots of various capabilities – brick/blaster/metamorph/speedster/mentalist/spook (thinking of a certain Green Alien).

There is a certain elegance in designing a really tightly themed character, even a one-trick-pony. But it can also be fun building a "can do anything" hero.

As GMs what is your preference? What about as players?

  6. Hey all,

I have a character who is a bit of a change on a traditional brick. He is normally 40STR with 15PD/ED and no resistant DEF. He has the ability to change mass, density, and size. He has an MP with 4lvls of Growth, DI, Shrinking, and Desolid – all ultras. He has a related MP with Flight, only when shrunk/Desolid and Armor only with Growth/DI.

I see him as a Vision/Henry Pym cross in some ways.

What are sneaky/cleaver ways he could use his powers? I have thought of get under a flyer while shrunk and growing to full Growth, getting momentum bonuses for shrinking and growth. I have thought of the Vision classic of flying high over an opponent then going full DI and dropping on them from the sky.

What other interesting tactics does this power set allow?
