  1. Re: Gods with Off Switches vs. Loaded Guns. DC vs. Marvel in Character Design.

It doesn't matter if that's the power level of your campaign world anyway. I would never (unless I was setting aside points to be spent later) create "Superman" on fewer points than the campaign allowed' date=' but I would consult with the GM to see how many points that is. If the campaign allows 500-point characters then I'll build a 500-point "Superman". Likewise if the campain allows 1,000-point characters, that's the limit I'd build him to. I am not suggesting that I would submit a 250-point "superman" in either campaign. In those worlds, he'd just be a wanna-be. In a world with a 250-point limit, a 250-point "Superman" is completely reasonable.[/quote']That's "Superman" who isn't the same as Superman, because Superman doesn't cut corners with his powers, he just has them, there's no multipower juggling, just incredibly powerful alien.

You are basically singing to the choir on this.

  2. Re: Gods with Off Switches vs. Loaded Guns. DC vs. Marvel in Character Design.

He's getting someone who is disposed towards helping him out. That's an Amicable summons. As well' date=' he's summoning a Specific Being - last I looked, that was a +1 advantage. And Superman still answers the watch more than once a day in the comics, so that's no more accurate than your complaint of a Superman in danger in a house fire.[/quote'] It's only a +1/4 if you just want friendly. +1 is slavishly devoted, which I don't think describes their relationship. This isn't D&D, 1 charge isn't reloaded every day, it's reloaded based on appropriate scene. Besides, it's not that hard to disregard the VPP to make the summon work.
  3. Re: Gods with Off Switches vs. Loaded Guns. DC vs. Marvel in Character Design.

So, what is your Superman's Ego? I'd expect Jimmy will have a tough time winning that opposed EGO roll - and since you have not added any of the Amicable advantages, then by RAW that's the only way the summoned creature will do anything for him. I'm not sure what Jimmy chants audibly to use his signal watch either, which is what Incantations means, nor why it takes him a full 12 seconds fiddling with the watch to get it to work - it seems a lot faster in the comics. And one charge? Supes seems to show up more than once a day in some of those old Silver Age stories (although it also doesn't always work where these mechanics are infallible - doesn't Supes normally arrive under his own power, rather than in a puff of smoke?)

I assume the IIF is a typo. You complain that a 250 point Superman needs a helpful GM to make him viable, but Jimmy is completely reliant on GM largesse to make this VPP at all useful, and the GM has to look the other way on the lack of Amicable on the Summon as well.

IOW, I don't see your build perfectly capturing this character.

It's summoning Superman, he'll help him out, because it's Superman's nature, not because Jimmy asked it of him. Think of it as summoning an angel to fight a demon, yeah the angel isn't going to do what you say, but he's going to slap the demon around. The special effect is Superman flying in a whirl of blue, red, and yellow.

That's right, everything is basically up to the GM on Jimmy's powers, it's not like he really ever chooses his powers, they just happen to him. I complain that a 250 point Superman needs the universe rewritten to make him useful.

  4. Re: Why Your Heroes Shouldn't Kill

What? You can still build weapons while moving to peace, there was this thing that happened in a relative time of peace called the cold war. We built more weapons during the cold war than at any other time in history. You can still move toward peace while maintaining a vigilance, conscripted armies aren't maintained, but regular armies are still kept. There's moving toward peace and being incredibly dumb, one of which involves science, the other does not.

  5. Re: Why Your Heroes Shouldn't Kill

"The people" have had two referendums in recent decades to vote on whether mandatory service should continue. In one' date=' there was a 77%+ vote to retain it. In the other, the percentage was lower, but enough. What gives that 77% of the population (doubtless including a significant portion of persons not required to serve - only males of certain ages are) the right to require those that don't agree that they are required to serve? And what would prevent the Empire from similarly requiring service from its citizens, potentially including conscripting experts to serve through military project design and implementation?[/quote'] As time marches onward, humanity is marching toward peace, thus armies are less necessary. When people see that they don't need armies, we can get to the more important/entertaining stuff:SCIENCE!
  6. Re: Gods with Off Switches vs. Loaded Guns. DC vs. Marvel in Character Design.

That's because he keeps getting rebooted and that's practically a new game itself, but even then it still holds true: the longer the character exists (in this case Superman) the stronger they become, it's shown, as time moves forward, Superman gets stronger. For example: he was way stronger just before the latest reboot, than he was in the 90s.

I don't actually read the X-Men, but I'd recently asked a friend, who does read, about Colossus, and he said Colossus is a heck of a lot stronger than he used to be. Thing is certainly a lot stronger than he used to be.

  7. Re: Why Your Heroes Shouldn't Kill

If this were true' date=' why would service need to be mandatory? If everyone is willing to serve, would they not all volunteer? Mandatory service is not about me believing I should serve - it is about me believing everyone should serve, and no one has the right to opt out.[/quote']Why wouldn't there be? The government decides everyone needs to serve, the people don't disagree, but they don't want to serve full time. How hard is that to get?
  8. Re: Gods with Off Switches vs. Loaded Guns. DC vs. Marvel in Character Design.

Agreed – in a standard Supers game, thousand point NPC’s are just another version of those GM Mary Sue NPC’s who exist to make it clear the PC’s aren’t powerful or important, just lesser lights in the great Universe of the GM.

Yup. Whether that grade is based on a standard of 10 – 12 DC or 100 – 120 DC. Unlike the typical D&D game, where the characters begin as raw, wet behind the ears rookies (yet get assigned important and prestigious tasks anyway – where are all the L3 characters while the PC’s are L1?), Supers tend not to grow in power over time in the source material. They get a wild power up, or a massive power down, on occasion, but they tend to have a set power level where they remain. And, as a result, those villains introduced in their first year or two remain credible threats, unlike that half a dozen Orcs when the D&D party is 15th level.

on the basis that a normal fire, like a house fire, is an ambient environmental condition, despite being statted out to inflict xd6 Energy Damage. In fact, maybe we should expand Life Support for Supers games to encompass “natural hazards” in general, and maybe even include “normal weapons” at the extreme.

Or exercise writer fiat. Superman's susceptibility to Kryptonite should have killed him years ago if it were ruthlessly exploited by a killer DM. Lucky for Supes he has a good GM who views disadvantages/complications as story hooks rather than his license to screw over the character and the player.

I disagree, if those multi-thousand-point NPCs are only mentioned, then they aren't GMPCs, and the characters have to walk off with the show (without having anything resembling weaknesses) to be a Mary Sue. The sheer fact that you can have a universe where there is a Superman and Booster Gold is genuinely important, makes Mary Sues nearly impossible. Right until Red Hulk, Sentry, or Deathstroke show up.

Like massey said:10-12 DCs doesn't fit those characters. That's patently false, every character in comics have grown stronger over time, some a bit more than others, but they all grow stronger. Spider-Man started at 10 Marvel tons, but he's probably closer to 20 or 30 Marvel tons by now. Wolverine's regeneration didn't start anywhere near where it is now. Colossus Started off at 70-80 tons and now he's in the 100+ category, not including his juggernaut or Pheonix powers. Etc.

Or don't because that has never been the case and unless you are designing your own game, you really shouldn't be altering one game just to make up for your wimpy Superman writeup. Especially when it's easier to just make Superman tougher.

  9. Re: Why Your Heroes Shouldn't Kill

The Draft applied on both sides of many wars. One side was "wrong", at least according to history. It doesn't seem all that unlikely that many in the Empire believed that it was doing the right thing, against impossible odds, and had been since those Clone Wars. Those Separatists must be stopped - changing their name to the Rebellion doesn't change the fact they're the same Separatists who so challenged our beloved Republic (now the Empire). They have to be stopped, and any right-thinking person would GLADLY volunteer. Don't you know there's a war on?

If "most of the people" would serve without the draft, why not rely on volunteers? The Swiss require military service from 100% of their male citizens [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_of_Switzerland] with those unsuitable for direct military service serving in another capacity. Referendums have upheld this compulsory military service, so the majority of the population considers it appropriate, if not necessary, but with 5% of the Swiss military made up of professionals, and "the rest are male citizen conscripts", so that's 95% drafted. I'd say 95% is "most" by any definition.

So, sure, I can see the Empire conscripting workers to construct their arsenal, including the Death Star. I can see the general publis seeing anyone who spoke out against such conscription as unpatriotic at best and seditious Rebel Sympathizers, maybe even active separatists, at worst. They should be PROUD to serve! Don't they know there's a war on?

History is written by the victor, rarely has a morally superior force gone against monsters, it's nearly always been red vs blue. The separatists were destroyed, utterly, they are not the same as the rebellion, the rebellion were parts of the republic that realized "oh my god, Palpatine is a monster", part of the reason people hate the prequels is that it's morally ambiguous.

There are different benefits for being a professional than there is being a conscript. A conscript doesn't serve as long and doesn't go through quite as rigorous training, which is what most people (who are still willing to serve, but not for a long time) want.

I see most of the public recognizing that the Empire is evil, because of the stories of the republic. Why else would such a monolithic organization fail to quash the tiny rebellion?

    Humans are the monsters.

Yes, I think a veteran Spider-Man is that dangerous. When aggravated, he will destroy you.

  11. Re: Gods with Off Switches vs. Loaded Guns. DC vs. Marvel in Character Design.

No, looks like there's maybe three. You're just the most dismissive and vocal. I also note you haven't posted builds and just want to put other people who down. Which is, again, frowned on around here.

I'd suggest finding another thread as this one offends you on some level and you're not going to make them stop posting.

But if you're enjoying yourself, disregard the advice, just try to keep it civil.

I have posted a build: Silver Age Jimmy Olsen at 250 points. I've been trying to figure out how to convert an HDC file to text while managing to not look like a bunch of random numbers and letters. I suppose I could just save a picture of it and post that, but I feel like that might be a bad way to go about it.
  12. Re: Gods with Off Switches vs. Loaded Guns. DC vs. Marvel in Character Design.

When dealing with other people who fiddle with the nitty-gritty of such things, the people who do homages, tend to make it clear that it's a homage, either stating it outright, or by making it cartoony in some manner. The only thing cartoony about this, is the idea that someone would use this write-up. Plus, they could get a lot closer to building Superman at 250 points.

Superman exists on paper and in digital format, that's no more in our skulls than any human.

Then perhaps people should say "this is my Not-Superman", rather than saying "This is Superman".
