Is this power to complicated or abusive: Coral Slide

Compound Power:

 

Coral Slides:  (Total: 39 Active Cost, 15 Real Cost)

 

Flight 15m, Reduced Endurance (1/2 END; +1/4), Usable Simultaneously (up to 4 people at once; +1/2), Grantor pays the END whenever the power is used, Grantor controls the power totally, Recipient must remain close to Grantor (26 Active Points); OIF (-1/2), Only within 15' (5m) of a solid surface (-1/2), Physical Manifestation (-1/4) (Real Cost: 11)

I'm not sure where you see a concern. Looks like the weilder plus 3 companions can fly at 15m, within 15m of a solid object, and get to stay on the "perch" between actions, which I think flying characters could do anyway.

 

With 26 AP, the slides would have had 3 PD/ED anyway, wouldn't they?

 

Wait, what are the OAF and OIF? Don't they have the same PD/ED as the Manifestation? I will assume they are separate foci that allow creation of the slide and perch.

 

If you add Difficult to Dispel to the Slide 3 times, it becomes 37 AP, and 4 Defenses, with a real cost of 16. Dropping the Perch and the bonus defenses takes 4 points back, for a 1 point difference. Or pick +3/4 of other advantages (it could be 0 END, capable of carrying more people, etc.).

Yes the focus is what generates it, the physical manifestation is the coral itself, it was a rough draft, the whole thing is OAF, I also changed the column power to x8 and ae (accurate)

 

The issue I am having is with the coral perch:

 

First very small power in points, always a matter of concern for me.  Second it will prevent him from falling if he looses his flight somehow (Focus taken away, he's ko'd etc).  Basically he will stay on the pillar.  It can also be used for saves on falling characters (Pillar forms under them type thing..,  It is not a combat power, more a lifesaver.  

 

The power is also part of a MP, so the fact that with uncontrolled he can basically stay hovering with the build while swapping points is "fishy" to me.  However 1 point of 0 end persistent flight is only 2 point increase on the character (1 for MP, 1 for slot), so not much different in price.

Gut feel is the Hover doesn’t bug me. The Uncontrolled aspect is offset by the relative ease of demolishing the Physical Manifestation. Looks like he can only grant the power if he is in pretty close range (40 meters – 10 meters per AP – so likely most of the battlefield).

 

He’s spending 4 points. He could pay 1 to turn the Slides into a Variable slot (if they are not already) and 3 to bump the MP Pool so he could devote a few points to it (3 AP is more than enough for the same 1 meter).

 

Given the nature of the power, would it save a falling character, or would he impact with the Perch (no more than 5 meters away from a solid surface) and possibly break its Physical Manifestation?

 

I’d welcome other viewpoints – I would not see it as a problem in my games.

 

It may be a good idea to parse through how you and he see it working in various scenarios to ensure you're on the same page (and probably also get a comfort that 4 points is about right).

 

Even if it provided "Immune to Falling Damage", is that a big deal considering the costs of Life Support to make one immune to other forms of environmental damage?

 

Now, given the "fun" we are having parsing through it, maybe it could be simplified somehow.

I agree, overly complicated

 

The power is like Iceman's Slides, he can gain altitude, if he were to be knocked out or stop generating the slide he would still be on it, he could also use the power to help others

 

It should cost end to generate and move, only going to 0 end when he is not moving.  To save others it should cost end (I am wondering if the barrier power he already has would cover that aspect?)

plus Naked Advantage: Uncontrolled (+1/2); OAF (-1) for up to 15 Active Points (7 Active Points); Only to Hover (-1/2) (Real Cost: 5)

Another possible build that seems closer to goal

 

Coral Slides:  (Total: 41 Active Cost, 14 Real Cost) Flight 15m, Reduced Endurance (1/2 END; +1/4), Area Of Effect (4m Radius; +1/4), Usable By Other (+1/2), Grantor pays the END whenever the power is used, Grantor controls the power totally (30 Active Points); OAF (-1), Only within 15' (5m) of a solid surface (-1/2), Physical Manifestation (-1/4), Side Effects, Side Effect occurs automatically whenever Power is used (Side Effect only affects the environment near the character; -0) (Real Cost: 11)

 

Naked Advantage: Uncontrolled (+1/2); OAF (-1) for up to 15 Active Points (7 Active Points); As Coral Slides (-3/4), Only to Hover (-1/2) (Real Cost: 3)

 

Naked Advantage: 0 End (+1/4); OAF (-1) for up to 15 Active Points (4 Active Points); As Coral Slides (-3/4), Only to Maintain Uncontrolled (-1/2) (Real Cost: 2)

 

Might even drop the  UOO & AE to another naked advantage with increased endurance and drop the 1/2 end off flight.  I like the idea that he is not a taxi service...
