range modifier for detect does what, exactly?

I was looking at spacial awaress and noticed that it's built without the range option. I don't have the book with me, but I don't think any of the example senses include range. Detect is listed as no-range by default (in fact, range specifically lists detect and touch), so I'm a little confused.

What does range do for detect?

The Range Modifier applies to PER Rolls, just as it does to Attack Rolls, thus making it harder to perceive things at a distance.
