Mental attacks vs automatons

Hi,

 

If a mentalist attempt to hit a target wich is an automaton (but it's not obvious for the mentalist) with mental powers, does he knows automatically the target is an automaton when he uses his power, whatever the result of the attack (the attack acts as a discriminatory sense ) ?

 

I.e, when the attack roll is made (whatever the result), the GM must say "you can't reach the target 's mind, it's an automaton" or can he simply say, "you didn't hit his ECV" or something else to let some suspicion about the target nature, or the mentalist is unaware of the fact and the attack is treated normally ?

He knows he hit the target, and he knows his power cannot affect the target. Beyond that, he's gotta draw his own conclusions.
