DCV levels

Dr. Anomaly

Question

Steve,

Two questions regarding DCV levels, primarily in connection with using them to represent the size modifier of permanently smaller-than-human creatures.

First, HDv3 allows the 5-point levels bought as DCV to be made Persistent. The problem with this is that according to 5ER, pg. 53, very bottom of the 1st column: "A CSL (of any cost) applied to DCV is not Persistent (and cannot be made so except by buying the Skill Defense Manuever at level IV; see page 57)."

Second, since CSLs bought for DCV (even if bought as Powers) to represent the difficulty in hitting a small target are NOT Persistent, doesn't this mean that a sleeping or unconcious Insectile creature (+12 DCV; Bestiary, page 26) is just as easy to hit as a sleeping or unconcious human-sized creature?

Re: DCV levels

1. What HD says is meaningless. It doesn't constitute any sort of "official" statement on or interpretation of the rules. If you think it's doing something the book doesn't allow, let Dan Simon know. If he has any questions, have no fear, he'll get in touch with me and we'll make sure everything's straight. ;)

2. Yes, technically that's what it means... assuming you throw common and dramatic sense out the window. ;) It's up to the GM to decide how he wants to address that situation, but I think in most cases most GMs will just let the DCV Levels go right on applyin'.
