If you want the Damage Shield to affect an area, you have to buy the appropriate Area Of Effect Advantage for it -- the DS and your STR are separate things.
Do I therefore also have to purchase personal immunity on the damage shield or be affected by it? Or can the hex be defined as starting at the edge of my hex (it is, after all, meant to represent large and blobby fists).
