  1. Re: Escapist reviews CO.

    Greetings

Without reading the review (I'm at work and the internet police are watching... ), I say that this is just another case of personal taste. I guess I'm just happy to have a fun, quality superhero themed MMO to play.

As for the character customization, it would be really stupid of Cryptic to NOT allow people to create a hero to look like they want it to. Now whether or not he plays or has the powers you wanted him to... that's another story all together.

As for unlockables, there are some in the way of powers, items, titles, and pets. But costumes doesn't make sense for this game.

  2. Re: List Your CO Nemeses!

    Greetings

Uncle Samson fought his Nemesis, Red Delilah, a Duel Sword Weilding Raven-Haired Mini-Skirt Mastermind, for the first time last night. I liked the cutscenes.

I was a little disappointed she wasn't a little harder to take down. But I still think the whole Nemesis idea is cool.

  3. Re: Do you play CO as an MMO?

I've seen a considerable amount of 'looking for help' messages' date=' but they're usually (a) general, and (B) not specifically looking for higher level assist, they're just looking for a appropriate-level group to finish off a challenging quest.[/quote']

Yeah, I too have been surprised by the lack of beggars. I don't really mind helping so much in this game, since most missions are over pretty quickly. In fact, if you have a good group, you can bounce between two open instances racking up the XP pretty nicely.

  4. Re: Disappointment

    @antiklaus

Thanks for the post, and added info about the PnP game. Like I said, I only played a few times and that was way back in the early 90's. I guess, like a lot of people, I've been waiting for an honest to goodness Super Hero MMO for a real long time. I remember being excited when Freedom Force came out. And then really excited about CoH. But neither of those really delivered what I was looking for, although both were good in their own way.

In response, I agree with most of your criticisms. Since I have a Melee Character I didn't really think about Dodge, but I see your point. While I don't know if it would work to have your character actually "Dodge" incoming attacks, bobbibg and weaving, I guess they should have much fewer attacks landing. If this isn't the result of a higher dexterity... yeah, what good is it?

The idea of Personality Traits, like the Handicaps, sounds awesome. Obviously it would be hard now to implement it, but I wonder if some kind of add-on would be possible? I hope that they would add something like this. It would really be something that could set it apart from the other MMO's out there.

And yeah, what's the deal with only being able to change the color of some power effects? I was lead to believe, in all the press leading up to the release that we would have a much broader control over how our powers looked? I mean, power and emination point are nice, but it could be so much more. Maybe we can hope more will come later. CoH added something like this, so there isn't any reason why Cryptic couldn't add more, right?

  5. Re: Do you play CO as an MMO?

Hey, what do you think about these ideas? They already have the whole "Side-Kick" thing. Wouldn't it be cool if there were special powers that you could purchase that would ony work with a sidekick? My be you can throw them at someone, share a healing patch, distract if they are getting beat down, maybe you guys can think of better. I was trying to think of some ways different powers could work in synergy together. Maybe an added boost, or really cool effect or graphic.

    Just thinking out loud.

Not to be rude... but no one commented on my ideas. I was just trying to think of things that could be added. Perhaps if we could come up with several inovative ideas we could forward them to Cryptic.

  6. Re: Crafting

Ha! I had never even visited any of the buildings around Ren Center. The Club is dumb. Why do they put those in there? CoX had one I remember. Just dumb.

I like the Stock Market/Item Market look. That was a good idea.

  7. Re: Disappointment

So, it's clear Co isn't much like the PnP game in playstyle. Basically all that is used it the Champions Universe (i.e. characters, powers, places, etc...) Theme. I think, like many have said, that there is no real way you can directly translate a PnP game to MMO without a serious difference. There are simple two different animals.

I have a hunch that the reason things like disadvantages weren't explored was that they were far enough along the road developing the Marvel Universe, that adding it once they started with the CO theme, it would have required scapping everything they already had. I'm not saying they couldn't have, just saying I can't blame them for not wanting to.

One thing I love about the MMO vs a PnP is that you have the freedom to pick it up and play whenever you want. You can always (usually) find someone to play with, if you care to. You can make changes to your character in the middle of a mission. Not saying one is better than the other. Just pointing out that there are a lot of nice things about MMO's that PnP can't provide as well.

So back to MY question, not being very experienced with the PnP game, "What kinds of things from the PnP game would you like to see in CO?"

  8. Re: Crafting

Btw' date=' I heard you needed to only have your components in your bank and then you can use them at any crafting table. Is this true?[/quote']

ummm... what? Bank? I didn't know we had banks. Where? How? Cost?

Sorry... not sure how I missed that we had banks. I'm level 25 and have survived with my bags only.

  9. Re: Disappointment

I have been playing Champions since the 80s, I still run a campaign once a month. I wanted to voice my disappointment in Cryptic's supposed rendition of the Champions RPG. I think they failed miserably, the graphics look like poor Silver Age comics and the game system is not truly customizable (which is where Champions the RPG succeeded. HERO had a great product for a great opportunity in the MMO world. And Cryptic destroyed its potential.

I am starting to believe Cryptic needed to slap a title on top of their game when Marvel quit them and came to HERO to save the day.

I don't know if the developers did not understand the game system or just did not care, but I am truly disappointed.

I am sorry, I was so upset with it I wanted to voice my opinion here. Oh well, I still have the RPG and my friends.

I wanted to go back to the original post.

I have played the Champions PnP, but only a few times and that way back in the early 90's. I was wondering what aspects of the PnP game you are most dissapointed not seeing in CO?

I remember one thing, I made a character called Blindside. Hence, he was blind (I was big into Daredevil then). I remember you could get some kind of bonus for having handicaps, either physical or mental or other. I don't really remember how it all worked, but I was really intregued by the idea.

I always thought that if I ever created a RPG, instead of rolling up stats, everyone would start with a set amount and distribute them to fit their class. They could even take negatives (this would represent handicaps) to really bolster something else. I still think this would be a great concept for a game. Talk about your min-max factor!

Obviously it's too late for Cryptic to add something like this, but what other things could they implememnt from the Tabletop RPG to CO?

  10. Re: Respecing Might based on Test Server notes

The nice thing about Hurl is you can add the ... whatever the thing is that cancels travel power. I love having the Thunderbolt Lunge to close distance. It's MA though I believe, and Might has a Punch like it, but the Thunderbolt Lunge can also work as an evade if you are getting pummeled.

  11. Re: Do you play CO as an MMO?

    Agreed.

Just thinking out loud.

  12. Re: Do you play CO as an MMO?

    Ditto.

It doesn't seem to fit with the genre either. After all in the comics even the team characters do very well on their own. Super heroes are, by and large, all-rounders. Dare I say "tank-mages" *sniggers*

While I agree that most heroes do well on their own (or else would they really be "heroes"?) , BUT you will note that they can fight bigger and badder threats when they do team-up. I can think of a lot of comic book teams (JLA, Avengers, Defenders, Teen Titans, X-Men, etc, etc...) that have taken on all kinds of massive monsters, inter-galactic terrors, villian teams, demons, aliens, giant robots, mad gods.... there is no end.

My opinion is that, while I don't think the solo rpg side of the game needs to be changed much and will always be where most CO players spend most of their time, there is a whole lot of potential for Super Groups and on the fly Team-Ups. I think they already have some good ideas with the mini-instances (is that what you call them? the little three headed icons on the map?), I just hope they push to inovate and try new things.

I would hate people like checkmate to quite playing because there isn't enough there to interest them. The more the merrier in my opinion.

  13. Re: Do you play CO as an MMO?

And this differs from other MMOs how' date=' exactly?[/quote']

Well, in Guild Wars, to mention one (if I remember right) the level cap is 20, which you can reach in a day or two, and then the game really starts. Everything is multiple builds and unlocking new powers to tackle new challenges.

    Not to mention the PvP.

I'm not saying CO should go that route, but it's one of many examples they could use for ideas. All I'm really saying is that I hope Cryptic isn't looking at CO in it's current state as finished (given everything I've read it doesn't seem to be), but more like a good platform to start from.

I see a lot of untapped potential, especially in the SuperGroup and PvP area, and was wondering what other people thought about what could add some irresistable charm and fun to an already great game.

  14. Re: Do you play CO as an MMO?

I absolutely play CO as an MMO. The style of MMO play I prefer is solo. Fortunately at least so far I am not having any problems playing the game with my preferred style. But then again my highest level character is 21st, so there is a lot of the game I haven't seen yet.

As to PvP, as long as I don't have to participate in it in any way, shape or form I don't really care about it.

That's great that you are having fun. Unfortunately once you have reached level 40 there doesn't seem to be much more left to do. You might make a few other characters to level, but at some point it will get old.

That's what I'm concerned about. If most of the players have the same experience then many of them will quit playing, and that isn't good for the game long term. I hope that CO makes the game more varied and fleshed out for PvP and Teamplay.

  15. Re: Do you play CO as an MMO?

If I had any hope that a) CO would also avoid those elements' date=' and B) continue to keep them out of the game, I would seriously consider joining the playerbase.[/quote']

I completely agree. I think, as it is, they are trying to stay away from it. Of course there will always be some similarities, given the platform and all. But what I really fear is that the Majority of the players, who I fear are mostly WoW burn-outs, will push the Devs to move closer and closer to a standard fantasy MMO clone.

I am still holding out hope as I am still having fun with the PvE game, but I can already see where, at some point, it will grow stale and I'll be longing for something more...

  16. Re: Do you play CO as an MMO?

I would love to see lairs at lower levels. Not involved with quest chains' date=' or stuff that makes them 'necessary' to run, but as an option if you want to just try out some teamwork, or get used to seeing what it's like as opposed to soloing to 40, then trying to learn it all at once..[/quote']

I think there are some... I think they are usually ones that citizens run up to you and give. But if you are talking about a type of lair/dungeon/whatever/separate instance that would scale to the player(s) level, and number of team members, that would be AWESOME!

My might character seems to be able to rock 2- or sometimes 3-man missions if I take it slow and pull carefully. On my sorcerer I so want to get some healing powers to see what their like, but I just can't spare the slots without suffering in solo play :(

As for ad-hoc teaming up, I offer whenever I can. Any escort or group missions I'll invite people who are hanging around the same area just to save us all time if nothing else :) Plus you get bonus exp from teaming up.

Again, I think that for CO we will have to stop approaching team play like your typical fighter/ranged/caster/healer set. It will take a different type of team dynamic. There doesn't seem to be anything like an actual healer class anyway. I actually think there will be some cool combos available for the right team-ups.

Wouldn't it be cool if Cryptic added some special powers for teams? Cannonball Special Anyone???

  17. Re: Do you play CO as an MMO?

To the point of teamwork. Rather then teamwork through roles (you tank' date=' me dps, him healer, mooo mooo), I would rather see power effects that work off each other. A perfect example is Taser Arrow. It has an advantage that if taken, after an opponent is hit with it, any electrical attack done to that opponent in the next 12 seconds will cause a Energy Drain effect. So team your archer up with your electrical guy. I would like to see more of this type effect.[/quote']

I like those ideas as well. I, playing a Melee Brawler, teamed in CO with a high level Electric. I was awesome! She would shock them into quivering statues and I would break them.

I think since CO is unconventional it will take a while for good team synergy to form, but that's half the fun... discovery.

And to respond to what Checkmate and rayoman were saying, I think that CO has the potential to fill both desires. It already has a pretty solid single player RPG path, now if they can solidify the PvP part, this game is golden!

(ok, I realize there are more problems than that... but trying to remain optomistic, as this is now our best bet for a Super Power RPGMMO)

  18. Re: Do you play CO as an MMO?

I guess I should feel some nostalgia by seeing it rear its Hydra-like head again... ;)

Sorry, not trying to start anything... just feel like they really have a potential for a really great experience, they're just not there yet.

While it disappoints me' date=' it seems there is a set formula for all the MMO's that come out from now on, the mantra they stick to is "Keep it fun", which seems to be, for most, instant gratification. Everyone seems to be using the same forumla and anyone who has tried to stray has either gone under, or been changed to fit the formula.[/quote']

I like the "fun", but for many of us, we enjoy both PvE and PvP. I don't think there has to be a sacrifice of one for the other. I think the PvE is good for leveling and crafting, but the PvP could be good for those who don't want to create yet another character and walk them through the game, just so they can survive in the arena. I think they can do something for this.

However' date=' teamwork doesn't work very well in CO -- it's quite difficult to effectively assist teammates anyway, since the UI for targeting an ally with a heal is not very good (and there are few other buffing effects) and it's nearly impossible to reliably grab (or avoid) aggro.[/quote']

Yeah... I don't know why they didn't think more about this. The good thing is that they still have time to fix it before they lose too many players.

I hope they do. You can only beat up so many thousand henchmen before it loses it's thrill...

  19. Re: Do you play CO as an MMO?

Yeah... it's really too bad they didn't put more effort into things like this that are essential to teamplay. The good part is that it's stil early enough for them to address those things and not lose too many players.

I did forget about the Bullet for Bissell, that Viper-X guy is near impossible...

  20. Greetings

While I'm not one of the fan boys that will argue at length about what an MMO is and isn't, I'm just wondering if anyone is actually playing CO like an MMO. When I think of an MMO, I guess I think of a game that is built so that, at least parts, are set up so that you must play with a team. So far (I am currently lvl 23) I have no Supergroup, and have only, on rare occasion, joined a group to do anything. it's not that I wouldn't like to, I really haven't felt like I needed to.

I have jumped in to help out a fellow hero if I notice they are getting a serious beatdown from a mob or two. But that is only if I'm close by and not engaged myself.

I guess what I'm saying is that I think CO has the potential to be a great MMO, but right now it really doesn't feel much like one. I see other players, but I rarely interact with them. I think (I really hope) CO will take some tips from other games to make it more player-interactive. At the moment there really doesn't seem to be any missions you can't solo (some suggest 2 or 3 players, but I've gone solo so far...), and I don't see any real PVP Supergroup compitition.

What I really think would be great would be if they make a Villians expansion. Then you could really see the potential for SG vs. SG tourneys, and even maps and instances. Think like Team Fortress 2 with Superheroes! Or like Guild Wars tourneys with Heroes vs Baddies!

    Thoughts?

  21. Re: Crafting

Am now up to 370 Science on my main and can craft 18-slot bags -- bring me the mats and I'll be glad to make any of you some. ;)

Awesome Steve! I've just gotten to around 250, but can only make 12 slot bags so far. But I do need to ask something...

When I have update my bags I have offered to give my old ones to whoever is standing around. The game doesn't seem to want to let me. Is that because I've used it, or does it have to be done through in game mail?

  22. Re: What's Next?

Yeah... Blood Moon looks like it will be fun. I remember Guild Wars and the Halloween/Christmas events they had. They were pretty fun.

I was more wondering what direction CO will take for additional content. Do you think there will be additional Downloadable Content? Or do you think they will sell actual Expansions? And what content would you most like to see?

I think Villians would be great, but I also think that will take the most work. They would really have to add a lot of structure to allow for henchmen and controlling them. They would have to come up with whole new models for the Character Builder. And then a whole new set of storylines and missions.

I think, at least in the short term, and given the recent poll, some type of expansion is more likely.
