  1. Re: Sky High The Movie

'When did Snake Pliskin become a superhero? Isn't he more of a punisher type than a flag suit?'

Excuse me but, I think that Kurt Russell is perhaps one of the most versatile actors in Hollywood. It's a bit foolish to restrict him to one character. The man cannot BE type-cast.

  2. Re: Uspd-2

No' date=' because we don't give exact dates. There are too many factors involved in producing a book that are pretty much beyond our control, so giving precise dates is a recipe for disaster. We find it's better, and more useful for our fans, to announce things as they occur (so you know the information is accurate rather than marketing puffery ;) ), and then to announce when the book ships. After that, it's out of our hands altogether.[/quote']

That's cool. I've just really been looking forward to that book. :)

  3. Re: Uspd-2

There was an update in last week's (07-22) weekly news post.

I know. I saw that. But, it didn't give a date it basically just said... "Sometime later."

I was just asking if there were a specific date that had been set yet.

  4. I've been combing the news archives, and I can't find anywhere that states when the USPD2 is actually slated to come out. The only place is on the release schedule, but it says "Early 2005."

Does anyone know when this is due out?

    Thanks in advance.

  5. Re: I'm considering Hero...

    Saw it.

It appeared to me as if you were patting yourself on the back in your failed attempt to find something to back up your erroneous "Hi, Pot. This is kettle calling.." claim.

Did you mean to imply something else?

Well, I HAD meant to imply that I re-read your original post and came to the conclusion that it was not an unreasonable assumption that you were merely attacking what you saw as a flaw in the system.

But, if you want to be pugilistic about it I guess I could hurl some insults back at you.

  6. Re: I'm considering Hero...

But, since you mention it... didn't you SEE the slug in "The Neverending Story?"

Wait, that was a snail. You're right.

Subjectivity is only subjective until someone 'objectively' 'believes' otherwise.

    Once again...

  7. Re: I'm considering Hero...

Meant only as my opinion of calling such a system "lethal"' date=' [b']not[/b] in any way as a reflection of his personal gaming style.

In the same way, I would state that someone claiming a slug is a fast moving creature is a joke.

The difference should be clear to anyone taking a honest look at the phrasing.

    Yeah, I got it.

    Didn't you see the ""?????

  8. Re: I'm considering Hero...

I've simply stated my own opinion on the matter and on how HERO by default handles it.

Only you here have seen fit to attack someone's stated perference on this subject.

    Hmmm...

"I suppose from the death characters PoV that may be the case. But as far as a measure of how lethal the system it, it's a joke."

  9. Re: A more feminine martial art

There is a Chinese style called Pi Qua Zhang that might fit your needs. It's a very soft, open, flowing style. It is actually considered to be the feminine counterpart to another style called Baji Chuan, which is very hard, closed-off and thunderous.

Though it is difficult to find good info. about these styles, they're on the web.

Actually, that's something that could work out well as a theme for both of the characters you mentioned. There is also a linking form that puts these two arts together, combining them harmoniously.

IRL I study these styles, so PM me if you have any questions about where to look for info.

  10. Re: I'm considering Hero...

In three of the five Prydain books, one of the characters (what I would have called a PC) dies. In Conan, a quarter of the Heroes bite the dust. LotR sees the lost of two (althought one is sent back) out of 9.

Break those into adventure sessions (two for each of the five Prydain books, one for Conan, 6 for LotRs) and you get a loss rate of 30% around after 17 adventures.

That doesn't compare badly with the lost rate I have of 40% after ~30 adventures And they tend to go in the same way. One here, one there.

Ok, now I think you're just thinking about this way too much.

The question was, why did you believe that the 'kill ratio' wasn't epic enough. But, I think a better question would be... What, in the name of all that's holy, does anything called a "Kill Ratio" have to do with how "Epic" something is?

There is so much more to the scope and scale of a given scenario than how often a player has all of their efforts in char generation and roleplay cut off at the knees. There is nothing epic about a PC-death that doesn't mean anything and serves no purpose other than to polish the muscle-sheen of the Uber-cool NPCs.

  11. Re: Suggestion for a book

In response to the original question posed by Lord Liaden...

I think that would be an awesome idea.

And, as far as the Trismestigus Council is concerned...

    Yeah.. I care too.

  12. Re: Pulp Villain: Monstrodamus

    Hey there,

I'm at work at don't really have time to read the sheet to offer a more considered opinion. (So, why am I here at all? right. :) )

I just wanted to pop-in and say that that is a freakin' awesome name!

    Later.

  13. Re: I'm considering Hero...

If One of us dies in combat' date=' it's gonna be a big thing, frankly i'm glad the system works the way it does.[/quote']

    Exactly.

If a GM finds himself, on his way home from a disappointing game session, whispering lamentations to him/herself to the tune of...

"Dammit, I only killed me a scant handful of PCs tonight..."

...Then maybe you should be using D&D. Or perhaps drop the RP and just run a good miniatures game.

    ...Like DnD.

  14. Re: How to get them off d20

explain to them the few "sublte nuances" that are fixed by switching systems... like

    1) the ability to jump off a mountain at high lvls and not die

    2) Dire Elephants being master climbers

    3) the "ferral template"

    4) anthropomorphic squid men

:) You forgot a few. Let me help ya out, bro.

    5) Thirty-foot wide hallways that are too narrow for three trolls to walk abreast.

    6) Creativity Cookie-cutters ...er... I mean "Character Classes."

    7) Wrought-Iron Thought-Shackles ...er... I mean "Alignment."

    8) Five-foot wide doorways a small riding horse can't fit through.

    9) "Read my lips... No - New - Artwork."

    10) Cattle-herding Character Progression ...er... I mean "Levels."

    11) "Polar-Ray" as a spell worthy of the core book.

  15. Re: I'm considering Hero...

    I used to use GURPS.

If I might offer my own opinion to help you in your decision. My honest opinion, humble as it is, is this: When I found Hero, gave it a thorough read-through and started planning a game, I honestly felt that this was a system that successfully accomplishes what GURPS unsuccessfully attempts to do.

I always found with GURPS, that the 'Universality' it touts as it's stock-in-trade comes at the cost of quite a few compromises that always end-up being made on the part of the players and (most especially) the GM.

Hero, on the other hand is ten-fold-and-then-some crunchy enough to handle whatever, (and I mean W-H-A-T-E-V-E-R ) you'd like to do, in whatever way you'd like to do it.

Please don't get me wrong, as you are clearly a fan of GURPS, I liked that system when I was using it.

    GURPS is a good system.

But, Hero is a GREAT system.

  16. Re: Dear G-D, NOOOOOOOOO!!! I hate Hollywood!

This panic is a bit premature, isn't it?

I mean, they're talking about one character. How big a role does she have? We don't know. It could just be a bit part.

That having been said... Yeah, they should stick to the source material. And they really should've stuck with Bryan Singer. I'll take the director of "The Usual Suspects" over the director of "Rush Hour 2" any day of the week and twice on Sunday. The X-Men should be about more than cliche humor and slapstick action.

I hope that Marvel studios picks up on this trend developing over at DC... if Batman Begins can be any indicator, DC may be breaking its streak of HORRIBLE films. Although, I have to say that Batman Begins had far too much logic and internal consistency to really be a 'faithful' adaptation of a DC comic. (Well, on second thought,... I guess Batman could be the exception)

  17. Re: HERO 5th Revised

OPINION: Blasting people that dont share your skewed view that you rate preferential treatment because you happened to purchase FRED recently and feel like you havent received your dollars worth out of it because an expanded version has been released' date=' calling them "corporate" lackeys and what not, makes you look like an idiot. IMO. Not only does it not help your position, it actively hurts it. And dragging in a diatribe about some other companies versioning schemas and frothing comparisons between that company and some malefic entity are not relevant and do nothing aside from painting you as a whackjob. Again IMO.[/quote']

    You don't say...

    Hey, Shrike...

I agree. It would also be very bad if someone were to accuse someone else of being a child-raping nazi. That would be wrong and it would paint one as a silly, misguided moron, intellectually no different than a garden slug or lump of cow dung. That kind of tact instantly demonstrates the utter ridiculousness of the speaker's point of view and highlights his latent tendencies toward bestiality... tendencies in which he is a 'bottom.' Just IMO.

There was also this story about two cooking-devices, one a kettle, the other a very outwardly focused pot.

Still, my point must have hit a nerve if my former apologies are going to go completely ignored. Fine by me.

But, one must admit it has certainly spurned a very long string. I almost can't grasp the incredibly lengthy run it's had.

I mean, Jesus Marimba! It's been going on for almost three days.

  18. Re: HERO 5th Revised

First of all, I want to offer my apologies for coming off a bit harsh. It wasn't my intention to be so insulting.

    That having been said...

it seems in keeping with the "industry leader" gaming product' date=' and more than competetive when one realizes the rules themselves have not changed[/quote']

    1. May I suggest... No, may I request... Scratch that, might I BEG... that we not all start jumping for joy at the prospect of DoJ becoming more and more 'in keeping' with the particular 'leader' of this particular 'industry?'

We don't need yet another system jumping on the bandwagon of what is, BY FAR the most restrictive, limiting and cookie-cutter-esque system on the market. d20 is the devil.

I'm not kidding. d20 is to gaming what MTV was to the music industry. They corporatized it, boxed it up in a prettier wrapper, slowly raised the prices and killed everything about it that was good, and honest and inspiring.

It hasn't happened to gaming yet. But, thanks to Wizards of the Cash, it has definately /begun/ to happen.

The poison that is MTV took a few years to do its work too.

    2. Respectfully, I disagree with the assertation that this tact is 'more than competitive.' The rules having not changed, is precisely my point. I am willing to bet that things have changed just enough to make buying it a necessity.

Oh, it doesn't seem like necessity yet. And it won't for some time to come. For now, it's all well and good and nice and comfy to debate by saying... Nah, it's only worth the price-tag if you're rich, or a collector, or both.

But, mark my words and mark them well. Your comfort with that standpoint, WILL fade.

Argue with this if you like.

People argued that d20 v3.5 wasn't an essential.

Show me a single minion of the d20 legion of mindless followers who has actually followed through on their self-commitment to not completely upgrade to 3.5, and I'll show you someone who's out of touch with reality.

  19. Re: HERO 5th Revised

I can't see how it's in any way unreasonable to charge 25% more for a book that's well over 50% larger' date=' or to publish a revision of a book that's been available almost three years.[/quote']

This reminds me of something. For some reason the number "3.5" keeps going through my head. "Almost three years???"

    "Almost three years???"

You say that like you're explaining the tenure of some eighty-year-old retiree who's been at his job all his life.

    "ALMOST THREE???"

Exactly how deep does your programming go, Corporate-drone-man?

However long ago you personally happened to buy it is completely irrelevant' date=' isn't it?[/quote']

Well, not completely. It is after all, relevant to me and to my personal wallet. However, since we're on the subject of personal opinions and views. I suppose the issue itself is beyond the purview of your personal inability to see "how it's in any way unreasonable."

    -----

To everyone else, I appreciate the feedback.

    Question answered. Thank you.

  20. I'm just wondering if anyone's heard of any plans to lower the price-tag on this particular book.

Look, please don't take this the wrong way. I'm a huge fan of this system. Absolutely Love it. I've had nothing but glowing remarks for this system since the day I happily discovered it. Honestly, as a GM who had, for years, been troubled by system constraints and problems, I finally felt as though I'd found a home with HERO.

    BUT,...

Fifty dollars for a /revision/ of a book, for which I paid forty dollars, less than a year ago?

I'm very sorry, but that's just absolutely ridiculous.

I sincerely hope that future supplements will not require one to possess this revision. Does anyone know?

  21. Re: Hero System is Just Alright With Me

I agree that Hero is well put together.

To be honest, I'm not sure I understand why they're releasing a Revised Edition. It's a little confusing to me.

My primary concern, having invested an awful-lot of money and time into my Hero stuff, is whether or not the Revised Edition will work with what I already have.

Will I have to keep a note-sheet with me and constantly compare it to everything I do?

    Does anybody know?
