  1. Re: Longest Running Thread EVER

Sorry. The Good Taste Police would confiscate your sex drive.

The only reason anything would pick Rachel over me if we were sitting on a counter somewhere was if they liked the taste of barbecued fat and the sweet taste of my diabetes-sweetened proteins...

    MMMMMMMmmmmmmm. Diabetes-sweetened proteins. :idjit:

My favorite was The Amazing Darkon. He was a darkness manipulator from Canada. My character was Canadian, so naturally The Amazing Darkon hunted my character.

The Amazing Darkon had this huge black lightning bolt thing on to of his head as part of his mask.

We sort of decided that lightning bolt thing was the amazing part.

Blue Jogger and Zeropoint are you talking about the Horton Plaza in San Diego?

Must be. I've been there and it IS weird. Can't imagine another "Horton Plaza" with a strange construction out there somewhere.

  4. Re: VPPs: Your experiences

Great topic. I think in a regular game with players (and GM) you're familiar with it can be done effectively and add a lot to the story. Overshadowing another character's specialty is not something that is done among good players with a history together.

The versatility of a VPP certainly can be abused by players IF given the chance. I think it comes down to all involved recognizing that just beacause a character with a VPP CAN do something doesn't mean it SHOULD be done.

When playing a character with a VPP, I will typically have a couple of options that I present to the group (players and GM) and solicit feedback as to what my character should, and within the context of saying in character, would do.

Taking cues as to how the GM and players reacts to different suggestions frequently leads me to a conclusion that allows my character to be effective

(while staying true to the character's motivations), while not destroying a carefully crafted scenario the GM has put together.

I guess it just comes down to perception. I don't view the game as Player vs.

GM, or Player vs. Player. I feel like the GM has taken the time and effort to craft a story for my (and other players) benefit and want to contribute rather than destroy.

That's not to say I'm not for complicating things sometimes. Complicating, not destroying. I have no problem with a GM telling me that something I'm considering is no good. And that's the beauty of a VPP-there's a lot of other options.

GMing is tough. See the Murphy's Laws of GMing thread if you haven't checked it out. There's almost no way for a GM to anticipate every possible reaction by every character. So throwing the versatility of a VPP in the mix among a couple (or several) of the characters makes that task even tougher.

Doing things that undermine the GM's scenarios, even if legal, will lead to oversimplistic and repetitive stories. The GM will lose the desire to do something different or unique if it keeps getting shut down because of a character's VPP.

    That's my take.

What about desolid usable as an attack and a small NND attack linked?

He sends the heroes to another plane (don't know how married you are to the abyss idea) where they are attacked by the damned (or demons or whatever lurks in that dimension)-that's the NND part. :eg:

  6. Re: The cranky thread

I have to deal with some obnoxious people tomorrow. As of now' date=' this includes a new coworker, who I don't think I like too much.[/quote']

I always utilize the "kill 'em with kindness" approach. Failing that, the "with kindness" part becomes optional. ;)

  7. Re: Character Brainstorming

    Just spit-balling here:

    1) I have liked the name Scion for a long time (never had need to make a character with that name, however). Now, it's the name of a car. If you can get past that, though, it seems appropriate.

    2) As far as his nemesis, here's a twis: it's his sibling. Your character may or may not be aware of their blood bond depending on how you want to play it.

    3) As far as the father: mega billionaire business men always make good villains. Lots of resources. Potential for exotic locales.

    4) Adopted family. Hmmmm. What if the mother ran and hid with him?

Perhaps she was a captive super-hero ravaged by his father while keeping her captive. She either escaped on her own or was rescued. Fearing the father would find out about the child, she kept it secret. Found a surrogate family for him and made surehe was well taken care of. Hmmm. Her sister maybe? Somehow, daddy has found out about the character and wants to claim what is his. If you go with the nemesis as sibling thing, the impetus for the nemesis' ire toward the character could be that they are no longer the heir apparent to daddy's fiendish empire.

    5) Iconography. How about a rising sun (son). Maybe he's japanese? I'll have to think more on this part.

    Good Luck!

  8. Re: Superhero Images

Orange? Starblaze's skin isn't orange! Orange would be the color in my avatar. ;)

Actually, I sampled the colors for the pic right off of the reference pics that PhantomGM posted in this thread, so it ain't my fault.

    Mags

-she of the orange lava skin...

Sorry Mags. Looks pretty orange to me. I mean she's got lavender hair, so...

orange skin doesn't seem THAT weird. It wasn't a criticism, BTW. It's a great pic, but Blue beat me to that comment so I just riffed off of his post.

    :D

  9. Re: Answers & Questions

    Q. Uh... while my wife's in the washroom and it's just the two of us at the table here, do you want to tell me why you keep rubbing my leg with your foot?

    A. No, I meant there was a tack on my chair. Sorry.

    Q. Are saying I'm a pain in the ass?

    A. Keep going, you're really close.

  10. Re: Campaign Advice

Take the number of dice in each villains attacks and divide them in half. Then multiply that number by seven. That's the average damage that attack will do.

Compare that to your PC's defenses. Will your villains avarage attack one-punch or stun your PC's? This should help you make some decisions.

You need to determine what the battle is meant to accomlpish. Is this the big finale?

Or are the PC's supposed to get their heads kicked in for plot purposes?

What are you, as the G.M., trying to accomplish with this battle?

  11. Re: Answers & Questions

    Q. Say why don't we shoot George W and Kerry what's his face and then we can have Brittany Spears as President ?

    A. One of them is Hermit and the other is Steve Rogers but they are both Captain America

    Q. Who are those guys with the wings on their heads?

    A. The drummer from Def Leppard.
