  1. Re: You Are President!

Caliente: The circumstances of her birth are rather murky, and the matter is a sore point with her. She would instantly announce that she refuses to be inaugurated, that she will not be on the planet on the day thereof, and she utterly refuses to serve at all. Hopefully, if this announcement is made early, and forcefully, enough, the matter of her status as a native born citizen will not arise.

The Blaze: She is too young (being 28 years old). Unfortunate; a President who can "slice time" would get so much more done. ;)

Lana Wanna: "Wait! When did I develop the power to control minds in an area beyond where I can be seen?" She would not long puzzle over that, as her thoughts turn to the "unofficial perks" of the Presidency.

  2. Re: Halloween!

Caliente: Is not much of an "investigator," thus will be at the ready for whatever the "detectives" in the team need from a heat/fire based Superhero.

The Blaze: Very much like Caliente, save for being speedster/energy projector.

Lana Wanna: Will suspect this candy has hormones or the like added. This is especially likely given the age range of those effected. She will try to get a sample of the candy and subject it to chemical tests.

  3. Re: Fishy, Fishy, Fishy, Fish!

I'm aiming at 1250 AD or so' date=' North Sea area type tech. Multi-masted ships had not yet been invented, and the only sail was the square-rig; there was lateen in the Mediterranean but not in the north, and fore-and-aft had also not yet been invented.[/quote']

To be acurate, it was a case not of "nat invented" but of "forgotten." The ancient Romans had multiple-mast ships. As well, the Chinese did from early on as well.

However, for ~1250 CE North Sea area, or a campaign setting based on such, you are correct; single-masted ships with a single square-rigged sail (possibly with two such sails on larger ships) is what would be available.

Which leads me to an idea...

  4. Re: Meta-Backgrounds

Then you are sadly lacking in imagination.

Please apologize, publicly, for your public rudeness.

I have seen many characters cross my scrutiny that have been made not as a build exercise' date=' but to bring a concept and background to life, the definition of a [b']character[/b]. What I have been asking about is the bit behind either of those approaches.

    {snip}

In the same campaign as the Spectre' date=' another player had a minimal meta-background in that he wanted to play an Golden-age Hero in an Iron-age game, and wanted to bring a technical skill set to a (then) heavily mystical group.[/quote']

I find it hard to reach any conclusion except "you didn't read what I wrote."

I said that, outside of "build exercises," I can think of no way to have a character that does not have what you have defined as a "meta-background". To which you replied, alongside an insult, that you wanted to know about the meta-backgrounds that players had for their characters, clearly implying you expect such things as a matter of course.

Perhaps if you were to give an example of a PC without a meta-background (a made-up example would suffice), I could why you are reacting to me so contentiously.

  5. Re: Multitarget Abilities

    1) Each ray set cannot be used during the same turn. If one eye is already being used it cannot switch to a different target.

Why have multiple pools? If a given power can be used but once' date=' and the beast cannot hit any given target more than once, then how does this differ from a single Multipower?[/quote']

One cannot make multiple attacks out of any Framework. Page 358.

It's a shame that I can't do this as RAW, it would make things much easier. I guess it does keep the balance-game a little more even spread.

Could you please tell me which page that is in the original Fifth Edition? I do not have the revised version.

Or, perchance, quote the relevent section?

In the original Fifth Edition, there is no restriction (that I can find) on the number of attacks that can be made from a single Framework. Thus, unless the revision differs in this regard, there is nothing gained by having four Multipowers.

  6. Re: Fishy, Fishy, Fishy, Fish!

Not magic at all, just a comment: from the library research I've done, it looks like the top sustained speed for a single-masted sailing vessel of this tech level is 6 knots, and with a single square sail, you can't do much better than one point into the wind (though even small improvements over that win you a lot).

Windmaking magics would help this, of course, assuming they can be sustained for many hours to days.

What level of technology are you assuming?

  7. Re: Multitarget Abilities

    "snipped" to shorten and clarify.

I have four Power Frameworks, in this case, they are all fully loaded ultra-based multipower pools. Each of the multipower pools has the same slots.

    1) Each ray set cannot be used during the same turn. If one eye is already being used it cannot switch to a different target.

    2) The Beholder can only strike against a specific opponent once per phase.

Why have multiple pools? If a given power can be used but once, and the beast cannot hit any given target more than once, then how does this differ from a single Multipower?

  8. Re: ideas/name for my character?

You guys realize that this thread sat dormant for almost a year right? I'm pretty sure the OP has named the character by now...

Ah, but consideration of appropriate names may well help someone, with a similar character, who finds herself unable to light upon a name.

    Also, it's fun. ;)

  9. Re: Meta-Backgrounds

    It's the begining of one' date=' yes.[/quote']

In that case, the only way I can see to not have a "meta-background" is to work out the points to accomplish a particular result as an exercise. I.e., to "twiddle the points" for practice.

Anything worthy of being called a character has what you call a "meta-background".

  10. Re: Multitarget Abilities

As long as powers are defined with the pool as "multi's" (ie: variable level as opposed to fixed (AKA "ultra's")) and the pool has sufficient points there is no issue.

In fact, if there are sufficient Pool Points, one may have any number of "ultras" operating concurrently.

  11. Re: Fishy, Fishy, Fishy, Fish!

Since it is not actually a power, you could simply treat it like other items and give it a high def and body, with 75% damage reduction to everything.

Or simply give it the Unbreakable Focus limitation.

Ah, but a Focus for what Power?

  12. Re: US Government's reaction to superhumans

I've long since come to the conclusion that much of the time someone's answers to threads like this tell allot more about them than the situation.

As, for example, that said someone has dealt, extensively, with governmental "security"?

Please, do not make assumptions about responders' mentality, biases, etc., until you know somewhat of their experiences.

  13. Re: Multitarget Abilities

That build is not legal under the RAW. Notice how it has one multipower yet calls for them to use two attacks from within the pool.

Are you sure about this? As I understand it, one can use more than one slot in a Multipower simultaneously, so long as one has sufficient Pool Points to distribute to more than one Power.

What one can't do is make a Multiple Power Attack with different slots from the same Multipower.

  14. Re: You Are President!

Olorin - I'd have to read the constitution to see if he is eligable. He's an American Citizen, old enough (747 years old) but a naturalized citizen. I believe you have to be born one - but George Washington was not born a Us citizen; the US did not exist at that time.

The Constitution has a provision, the exact wording whereof I forget, that anyone born before the Constitution was adopted, within the area the Constitution covered when it was adopted, may be President if all other requirements are met.

  15. Re: US Government's reaction to superhumans

Taking on the figurative "role" of the United States government would do you think the reaction would be to the following situation/premise: It is early 2007 and over the past few weeks several being, ostensibly human have appeared across the world displaying would could be described as superpowers: Enhanced strength, invulnerability, the power of flight, creation of matter and energy along with other stranger effects. They seem to come from all walks of life and all nationalities with no pattern observed to their appearance and allegiance so far.

One of the first incidents is detailed here

    LINK (nsfw due to language)

How do you think things would proceed?

Cover up everything, deny everything, ignore everything. Id est, the same way the US government is "dealing" with global climate change.

  16. Re: I tried to resist, I really really did.

This is not from the last week, nor the last month, but it is so characteristic of Lana Wanna it has gained fame among those who know her.

Introductory information: Lana Wanna was wearing a vest, with nothing under it, with a very deep and wide neckline. It was made of leather that would usually be used in making the finest of gloves, yet it provided spectacular lift to her very sizable bosom. She noted the large number of people ogling her at the bar she and a friend were at, and turned to said friend.

"Some guys like 'em full, other guys want 'em firm, and a few guys care most if they're round and well formed."

A long pause followed by an extreme shrug that caused "jiggling."

"But I don't care for apples all that much."

The laughter stopped the game for 10 minutes, the OOC chatter that followed stopped it another 30.

Melon is the Elvish word for "friend." So melons must be "friends." :o

    Sigh.

    Let's keep it real. :D

  17. Re: Royalty Character

Depends on the country. You could be the "True King" and still not rule' date=' or even reign -- You could have been displaced by a dictator, for example, and living in exile. Romantic! I may use this.[/quote']

Ah, but can one be a Head of State if one has no country to be Head of State of?

  18. Re: Meta-Backgrounds

Fair enough. A meta-background is any other detailed thinking that went into the creation of the character. Not just, "Hey, I'll make a sound-based energy projector with X rough background." It's not for everyone, and sometimes the meta-background fills itself in as you go, but I enjoy them.

Like I said, I shouldn't have posted this while down with the Flu.

So, the fact I designed The Blaze to fill in gaps in the group I was joining, being careful that the character would have a personality that would "fit in," would be a meta-background?

  19. Re: What happens when a new GM doesn't understand game balance

I only made the mistake of gaming with one girlfriend (with me as GM running a Fantasy Hero campaign). I recall one occasion where the players were exploring some monster-infested caverns. It's hard to build up suspense when your girlfriend is drawing hearts and cute cartoon figures on the hexmap. :(

That is an excellent method to become an ex-girlfriend.

  20. Re: Fishy, Fishy, Fishy, Fish!

An unbreakable fishing line would be of enormous usefulness. Given that the Hero System resists absolutes, this would need to be modeled as a very hard to break line.

I am not sure what would be the best way to accomplish this.
