The Machine Stops

So we have social distancing, self-isolation, zero-contact delivery, virtual gaming, virtual conventioneering, and I know it's all necessary to beat COVID-19. That said, I can't help but feel we're verging on the scenario postulated in this "meditation." Zero-contact everything, and all people do is sit around, listen to music and lectures, and share "ideas."

The story--"The Machine Stops" by E.M. Forster--was written over a hundred years ago, and it wouldn't take all that much to update it for the modern era. I hope you like it, and heed the caution it offers.
