The question: Taking into account the rules (listed below) from the FAQ, can a PC who has entered and then lost a 'DEX off' still abort to the Roll with Punch maneuver after being hit (and before damage is rolled, of course)?
According to the text, Roll with Punch is the only combat maneuver that can be aborted to after any attack is made, and the way I read it, should only be disallowed if the PC had already taken an action that phase. But if a PC hasn't acted that phase, even after losing a 'DEX off', the PC should be allowed to use it.
We had a small disagreement regarding this during our game last night. I hope you can clear it up for us!
Thanks,
Mags
Q: If, per 5E 235, two characters make DEX Rolls to determine who
acts first, can the loser still Abort to a defensive action?
A: No. Committing to the roll means the chance to Abort is lost.
The character has staked his chances on getting to act first, and
having failed to do so, has to live with the consequences. In some
cases, the GM may even want the characters to specify what actions
they're attempting to take before letting them roll off.
Q: If two characters make DEX Rolls to determine who acts first,
can the loser change his action (for example, re-aim an Area Of
Effect attack, or switch to a different attack) to compensate for
the winner's action?
A: No. The whole point of the DEX Roll contest to see which of two
roughly simultaneous actions takes place first for game purposes.
Both characters should already have stated what they're going to try
to do. They can't change their Actions just because they lost the
DEX Roll and find their intended Action no longer as advantageous as
they thought. The losing character has already stated, in effect,

it coming, and moved away.
