The M2 goes back to just after WW1 with the M1921 water cooled .50 cal, saw some improvements during the 1930's (air cooled, and then a heavy barrel, the HB in M2HB). Since 1941 there have been few changes, in fact a good number of the weapons out there date back to WW2. The only significant improvement has no real effect on the game and that would be SACO's QCB mod (quick change barrel) in the 1980's. On the original M2HB some careful headspace measurements needed to be taken when fitting a barrel making it impractical in the field.
