Victor
An idea just occurred to me for category #4, more suited toward low fantasy and lower powered settings. Make the RSR based on END, rather than magical knowledge. It's a crack-dealer's magic system to be sure. The first one's practically free. Successive uses of magic make it more and more difficult, and pushing a spell... well, that gets ugly fast. Such a system would be better if the END was in a Reserve, rather than Personal, IMO, but it could go both ways. Any spell or type of effect deemed to be inherantly exhausting could have an END drain side effect, if you want the caster to have to fall back on their other skills. A custom advantage that allows the END cost to be reduced by a successful RSR might be an option too (e.g, -1 END cost for every 2 points the roll was made by, minimum of Half END, frex).
