Growth and AoE fists

Killer Shrike

Question

Well, this is something Ive always taken for granted, but it just came up in a discussion and after a look in FREd and the the FAQ, it looks like Im all wrong.

Ive always thought that once you hit a certain size you logically started affecting hexes as AoEs with your appendages, but apparantly that is not so, in conflict with common sense.

Thought Id better check and make sure Im not missing something important... ;)

Q: When a character uses growth to become larger or has one of the large size disadvantages, at what point, if any, does that character's hands become so large that when they attack the attack is automatically an AoE?

The Sidebar on page 118 seems to imply that you must purchase AoE for large characters if you want them to be able to affect multiple hexes.

For example, if a character with 60 points of Growth slaps his huge hand down, logically it would occupy at least 1 hex (at x16 size, a hand should be about 8 feet). Does that character need to purchase AoE: 1 Hex for his STR to do so, or in the interests of common-sense is his sheer size sufficient to allow the character to affect a Hex in this fashion without needing to buy a seperate advantage to do so?

Thanx!
