BNakagawa
A proposal for a chartless level of success system: Instead of rolling 3d6, allow a player to roll larger dice, with a corresponding increase of risk of failure and expected reward. So, instead of rolling 3d6 to hit, if they roll 3d8 to hit (and still hit) they get some sort of advantage, be it extra CV, damage, knockback, etc. Alternately, you could use this mechanic to implement a death spiral mechanism for genres that are suited to such a thing (horror for example), where a wounded, sick, poisoned or otherwise impaired PC would have a chance of making rolls, but a reduced one... Simple penalties to rolls seem a little bland and pedestrian - this might be due to seeing them over and over. Rolling funny shaped dice has a little surprise factor for veteran hero players, and most of them haven't memorized the percentages for 3d8 yet.
