advantages/limitations - HELP!

Could someone please explain adders/limitations to me, 'cos I've never been able to get it straight. I think I understand +/-1/2, etc, but I don't understand how +/-1, etc works.

 

I would most appreciate a clear, detailed explanation of how this works.

I suggest you post this question on the Discussion board, where anyone can respond. Only I can respond on this board, and I can't explain it any more clearly than I do in the rulebook.
