Some Martial Arts maneuvers

Yansuf

Question

Just for the record, I believe this question is the same for 5th and 6th edition; if not, please consider the question with respect to 6th.

First, the Grab maneuver allows the attacker to throw the character grabbed.

Can the attacker "throw him to the ground" (target falls) and maintain his hold by going to the ground with him voluntarily? (This would simulate the most common wrestling takedowns.) Or must I make a separate maneuver with grab (3 pts), "throw" (target falls 1 pt), and "you fall" (-1 pt), which comes to the same point cost? (Unless 6th edition Martial Arts will change this when it comes out.)

Second, some published characters, for example Diamond from Champions Universe News of the World, have maneuvers that combine the "normally considered offensive" maneuver grab with block (Diamond's "Grappling Block") and escape (Diamond's "Reverse"); does this mean that that the "attacker" can do this as long as he does not do damage (from crush or throw) until the next turn? (That is how I interprete it.)

Assuming the answer to +2 is yes, for the grappling block is a second roll required, one to block, then one to grab (only if the first is successful)?

Thank you.

Re: Some Martial Arts maneuvers

As the discussion of Slam, Squeeze, and Throw on 6E2 62 indicates, Throwing a character after Grabbing him means the Grabber has to let him go. Falling to the ground with him doesn't change this. However, it would certainly be possible to more precisely define the Throw element as a Slam; HSMA will discuss this.

As shown on UMA 90, Grab Opponent is a Non-Exclusive Basis for a Martial Maneuver, meaning it's possible to combine it with an Exclusive Basis such as Strike or Block. Grappling Block, for example, allows a character to Block a HTH attack, and at the same time Grab the person making the Block; this only requires one Attack Roll (albeit one that pits OCV against OCV, as usual for Block). If the character just wants to Block, without Grabbing, he can Abort. The character cannot Abort to Grappling Block it if he wants to use the Grab part of the maneuver.
