Xavier Onassiss
Re: A thread for spaceship and starbase frameworks Interesting' date=' useful and mathematically accurate. [/quote'] Thanks! Maybe a little too accurate, sometimes. When the hex sizes come out weird, I generally round them off to a more useful value. The 900km hexes are easier to work with at 1000km, for example. Narf the Mouse
Re: A thread for spaceship and starbase frameworks I got back to thinking about this and figured out the Newtonian engines pretty quickly. Starship sizes start at Fighter, Size 6 (as per the Vehicle size rules) and a 40 AP cap for each Component. Each increase in Starship class is +3 to vehicle size and +15 to the AP cap - So, Fighter->Corvette->Patrol Boat->Frigate is Size 15, 64x32x32 meters, volume of 65,536 m^3 and a mass of 3.3 ktons and has an AP cap of 85. A Starship has eight Components at its AP cap, x2 for every -5 to the AP cap - So a Fighter with two 35-AP Small Lasers would take up the same space as one 40-AP Laser. (This is tentative and not every component could be "shrunk") Components which are made more expensive by the mass of the starship require a "Starship Size Modifier", which starts at +1/4 for the Fighter class and increases by +3/4 for each class increase. Engines start at Fighter-Sized, 40 AP Cap, NCM halved and require a Starship Size Modifier. If NCM is reduced below 1/1, the CM of the engine is then reduced by that fraction. Each class increase halves NCM, so for a Frigate, 15 APs dedicated to NCM are needed to break even (1/1 CM/NCM ratio) and the engine has a +2 1/2 Starship Size Modifier, for 9m of Flight at the starting Tech Level, as compared with 27m for the Fighter. NCM represents "Afterburner"-style thrust. Your engine Flight in meters is your acceleration; CM is represented as accelerating unpredictably. That is to say: Fighter Engine, Size 6: Flight 27m, x4 Noncombat, Starship Size Modifier (+1/4) (40 Active Points) Corvette Engine, Size 9: Flight 22m, x4 Noncombat, Starship Size Modifier (+1) (54 Active Points) Patrol Ship Engine, Size 12: Flight 15m, x8 Noncombat, Starship Size Modifier (+1 3/4) (69 Active Points) Frigate Engine, Size 15: Flight 9m, x16 Noncombat, Starship Size Modifier (+2 1/2) (84 Active Points) And, at some point beyond that (around Battleships), it requires a TL increase for engines to get any acceleration at all. Hopefully not too confusing.
