Else Earth: Atlantis (WIP)

Oh the story of Atlantis is one of tragedy and resilience.

 

Eons ago, the great continent of Atlantis boasted a proud and prosperous peoples. They worshiped gods analogous to the Greeks and had a very similar society. Atlantis was ruled by seven great kings who more or less avoided waging war on one another. One of the Kings Kaepernix was one day presented with a find. Artifacts from a long departed hyper advanced civilization known alternately as the Progenitors or the Celestials. Among the artifacts brought to the king was a powerful orb of knowledge. It communicated to Kaepernix and he was able to withdraw the secrets of this technology - so advanced that Clarke wrote a law about it - and he saw his opportunity and brought all of Atlantis under his benevolent rule.

 

This angered the traditional powers in the churches and the heavens. The King of Gods, Orzus, sent warnings via his priests that Kaepernix was testing his will and his patience. The King responded by slaying the priests and challenging the God. Orzus's fury was terrible to behold but Kaepernix held strong, his armor withstanding the assault of the enraged god. Then to the amazement of all present, uncluding Kaepernix and Orzus -the King's energy lance pierced the Sky God and slew him. 

 

The response was all out war between the gods and Kaepernix and his well-armed followers. For years the two sides fought. Their battles left hundreds of thousands dead, worse still it caused the continental shelf to fracture and rend. Atlantis was sinking and taking much of the world with it.

 

Salvation came in the form of Kaepernix son Jeson and Lyrria, the Goddess of Spring, New Life, and Innovation. Jeson and Lyrria had found love in the aftermath of the duel that left Orzus dead and their world in upheaval. Calling together the remaining clergy from the old ways and the artificers of the Progenitor technology, they crafted a ritual that stabilized the continent long enough for them to transport the seven greatest cities of Atlantis to a freshly crafted demiplane allowing the damaged lands to sink to the bottom of the ocean.

 

The survivors pledged peace and found that magic and technology didn't always blend as well as it had for their saviors - so the two forces were cultivated separately but equal.

 

To this day, Atlantis is a prosperous nation of island city states and a small continent colonized above and below the sea, ruled by the descendants of Jeson and Lyrria.

 

Appearance: Atlanteans were originally from human stock but have evolved over the eons with ample magic and Progenitor technology. In general they are human looking with skin colors ranging from Caucasian pale, to a darker islander and a blue or green tint for those who make their homes beneath the waves. They are generally taller, with sharper features and pleasing physiques. Most have pointed ears and webbed toes and feet are as common as not.

 

Technology: Atlantis has access to highly advanced technology as well as highly developed magic. As such they tend to see modern Earth (and the other Lands of Legend) through a patronizing, arrogant lens. They never developed ballistics or chemical weapons instead relying on elegant "primitive" weapons and armor enchanted or enhanced through Progenitor technology. 

 

Culture: Highly developed arts and philosophies. Keenly geared towards education and enlightenment, but ever cautious of collective arrogance and distasteful of conquest. Adventurous Atlanteans go to Earthrealm or explore the Lands of Legend, some leaving Earth's nexus altogether and taking to the stars. They have exceptionally long lives and low birthrates so Atlanteans are comparatively rare

Another race of powerful, good-looking humans. Mostly using them for Namor/Aquaman pastiches with a Clarke's Law and Abigail's Law of Technology/Magic.
