  1. Re: Ideas for a "snake-themed" half villainess

I imagine that some of the "abilities" you want the character to have will be largely informed by what backdrop you are thinking of. In various cultures, snakes have a wide array of mystic importance. Some are life givers, some marked by evil, and everything in between. But moving on from that, somethings that I tend to like when I create snake based characters are:

"Skin Shedding" - Shapeshift into any human or snake form.

This also gives you the ability to fit into small spaces because the S.S. allows you to change your size by up to 15%. Add that with the "touch" group shapeshift and contortionist, you can reasonably fit into small spaces.

"Venom" - Various bite attacks built with a standard poison construct.

    "Snake Senses" - Enhanced senses.

The suite of senses would be things like: Targeting with smell, Ranged through touch (Ground vibrations / Air movements), maybe heat vision

    "Snakes Guile" - Striking Appearance

    "Snake Dance" - Mind Control

    "Summon Snakes" - Summon snakes.

    Various Skills, etc.

As to Martial arts, though, unless I'm building an actual Martial Artist, I leave that stuff off. In the cases where I have built in Martial Arts, I have done with by having a "multiform" for the Snake and human. The Snake would be the personification of of their "true" self and would have various grabs, etc., but not actually be defined as being a specific "style".

    Hope that helps.

Thanks all for the help and the science hints ^^

We are in debate for several of your proposals

    Debating Opale

Actually, I was going to suggest your namesake: Opal. And given the black outfit, how about "Black Opal"? Or if you want something stronger, how about "Onyx"? The latter doesn't sound as feminine.

  3. Re: Champions Pronunciation Guide

    MEK-uh-non

TEE-lee-ose (note: I'm not saying this would be the correct Greek pronunciation; that's how *he* pronounces it though)

Here's one that gets a lot of people, though you may not have encountered it yet since this villain's not in one of the main books: Tyrannon the Conqueror is pronounced teer-RAN-nun (this according to his creator, Allen Varney). I think the initial inclination of most folx is to pronounce it TEER-uh-non, but that's not correct.

Well good, that just means I always got it right :). IIRC, he is in the Mystic World book for 5th ed.

  4. Re: normal maximum

I'm surprised "octopi" is considered “American” vernacular. Every nature show filmed by British or Australians I’ve ever seen use it also. In fact' date=' Americans are the only ones I’ve ever heard say “octopuses” (then again, how often do you hear the word, really?), and considering our butchering of the English language, I guess I must have assumed incorrectly. My main point, however, stands.[/quote']

Actually it is no mistake that it is misspoken more often in academic circles. In that part of society, the need to impress is strong and fumbling upon the wrong words is frowned upon. So all of our general education teaches us that that scientific words that end in 'us' must be Latin and therefore must be pluralized by replacing the ending with the 'pi' sound. The common mistake is to just overlook the Greek origin of this specific word. And it only takes ONE snooty professor then to make this mistake and doom his students to ridicule for speaking in the tongue of the uneducated commoners. Again Octopi is acceptable, but only because of frequency of use, not linguistic delineation.

As a piece of advice for all those who think this might be a good thing to trip your professor up on, DON'T. They do not like smart a**es and you will lose points in the class. Take this advice from someone who has made this mistake :(.

  5. Re: The Reason Behind Teleios

I've always taken it that Teleios did the work in his sleep' date=' once the assumptions of his conscious mind were no longer in his way.[/quote']

This has always been my preference, with a slight twist. My view is that Jakob has been working on his perfect man formula for days on end. Each day brought a new idea, each night a new breakthrough. The belief in the formula being only one step away pushed him endlessly. Late into the 6th day without sleep he finished his last set of test runs and set them in the machines for the cultures to grow and gene sequences to extract from them. Nearly blind from sleep deprivation, he fall down on his desk asleep.

Refreshed and replenished he awakens. Going through his lab he picks up his mess, and collects his notes. Walking to his machines to see what the results were from his examination he becomes puzzled and angry. "Where are they!?" he begins to scream. "No one knows where I am, yet..." thoughts race threw his head. He checks the security logs and finds that no one has come in, he was alone. In frustration at the lose of his experiment, and incompetence of his security system he allows the anger to overtake him and slams his fist into the table with a terrible might. Beakers fly across the open lab as the granite table below him crumbles below his first. Acids pore down upon his arm and the fumes of chlorine reek in the air. Shocked and amazed it takes him moments of blank stairs at his arm to comprehend what has occurred. The skin of his hand boiled and popped but there was always more to replace it. The stench of chlorine was thick but it didn't burn his eyes or throat. At last he knew what happened to his formula, at last he knew the fruits of his labor, at last he was A GOD!

But for all his knew found powers he couldn't recall the exact procedures for its conception. His notes for the last two days too incoherent to comprehend. Nothing seemed to make sense, and for days he tried with no success to recreate the formula. However the notes leading up to his breakthrough have rendered their own value in calculable as they have been the key stone for all his future research, be it quick heroes to mini-soldiers, dinos, or man eating plants from Venus! (3pts to anyone who knows the reference).

All his current research is devoted to uncovering the secrets of that night, he must know. It is insufferable for he the Man-God to bestow upon himself and not know how. All other objectives are second to this, and nothing will stop him from achieving it. And now that Death is no longer a problem, it is quite possible he might figure it out.

    ---------------------

I like this version for myself. It still leaves a little ambiguity in how he was injected with the test samples (or even if it was them). He is to arrogant to believe that it could be anything other than his formula that made him though. It also gives for him the eternal quest while elevating him to serious global threat. Could it have been another being? Yes. Could it have been a future version of himself? Yes. Could it have just been Him? Yes. Part of the fun is not knowing (even as GM). After all some mysteries are better left unsolved. :sneaky: Also I like my version that has the Six days of tireless work, with success following success, then on the Seventh day he rested to awaken to a world anew. A world in which he was a GOD.

  6. Re: normal maximum

This is an impressive thread. Starts on Normal Maximum and somehow gets to talking about the dictionary.

    No ADD in this group.:D

Speaking of Dictionaries, does anyone remember the Dick Van Dyke show?:D

  7. Re: Building an Encrypted Radio

you can also build it as mind link (though this has weird effects)' date=' or give the radio the "cryptography" skill so that it can encode and decode messages.[/quote']

I wouldn't give the radio cryptography (as an independent skill) myself. I would expect the player to have cryptography. Then depending on the exact nature of the radio, give it a possible "skill levels only" to reflect its user friendly interface.

  8. Re: normal maximum

Languager Creep is an inevitable occurrence and sign that the language is still alive and kicking.

I just wish it didn't creep in certain directions. . .

Oh I completely understand, and this is a belief I have as well. I would much prefer the style of creep you indicated, only to add greater clarity or new world. My comment in the first section was just in regards to human perception as compared to linguistic history. People might consider Octopuses to be language creep and thus deem it bad, whereas in reality their version is the creep. The second section was only meant to add to your point, not contradict, so I apologize if it came off that way. Indeed in the case of the plural of Index, I would much prefer if it would stick with one or the other. Either Indexes because of popularity and ease of use or Indices for historical / linguistic reasons.

  9. Re: Classic Flash Power

I'm wondering whether it might be worth looking at speedster martial arts style - this could quite easily be a combination manouevre of grab and choke hold...

If the speedster is not strong enough then a brick can put out an arm and stop the circling. It also imposes the fact that the power user has to be within combat distance....

    Doc

I like this idea. I already have Martial arts on the character (passing Dodge, Passing strike, and Passing Throw) so it will not be an odd adjustment for him. And with 6ed releasing a new Martial arts book, IIRC, it will work out well.

  10. Re: normal maximum

Given that this will be the 3rd time I have tried to post this I am a little weary about if it will post at all, and if there might end up being triplets of the same post. If so I guess I can delete them later.

I hate language creep. Many dictionaries now show “gill-O-teen” as a legitimate pronunciation of “guillotine”. And I actually heard “octopuses” on TV the other day. (Heck' date=' spell check didn’t even catch “octopuses”…)[/quote']

Actually Octopuses is the correct spelling and pronunciation for the plural of Octopus, in English. Whereas Octopi, which is the common American vernacular of the plural, is wrong. Although as per the etymology of octopus, Octopodes is the most correct spelling and pronunciation, but it is rather pedantic and rarely used even among scholarly individuals. So rare is it, that my spell check even classifies it as not being an acceptable English word.

Although at the end of the day all three forms are acceptable, and indeed are all recorded in most reputable dictionaries (with the occasional exception of Octopodes). Likewise, the plural of Index is in dispute as well. Index's original plural is as Ghost Angle pointed out, Indices. This term however hasn't stuck with the populace and has become Indexes as well. Depending on the field of work you are in, each one may be more appropriate then the other. With, I think, Mathematicians preferring Indices and Computer science professionals preferring Indexes (along with the average citizen). Wikipedia has an interesting, and useful, entry on the pluralization of words in the English Language. It even covers Index in it.

  11. Re: Gemini Character

Something I may suggest, although it is some what involved, is to have 3 characters.

The first is the character in his truest form. This is the primary character you are thinking about. Add to this character, in addition to all the other powers you want, the power "Multiform." This multiform character is the 280 pt character you are envisioning. This multiform character then also has duplication to recreate a single exact copy of himself. The duplication should be bought with trigger to represent the immediate creation of him when you multiform. Also it should have a limitation showing that when you recombine that you must return to the original character.

That's just my idea on it though,

    :)

  12. There is a classic speedster power where the character runs around in a circle and creates a vortex that sucks out all the air. How would one go about building this?

Currently I have: Vortex: EB 2d6+1, Area Of Effect (One Hex; +1/2), NND (LS: No need to Breathe; +1) (30 Active Points); No Range (-1/2), Restrainable (-1/2), Requires A Skill Roll (-1/2).

But this doesn't seem to account for the special effect completely. This is for a couple of reasons. One: Although the hero starts running around at the start of the attack, the target usually doesn't feel the affects for a little bit. So should the damage have extra time, even though the power starts at the immediately? And Two: how do you reflect the fact that the individual in the area doesn't really have the option to leave. Should this just be a odd entangle? If so how would you build it?

    Thanks in advance.

    :)

  13. Re: Teleportation confusion...

The way I understand it. Safe Blind is an automatic catch all for protecting the traveler(s). Where as any sense(s) you buy to help the teleportation are only there to help you sense the destination. They are still subject to the normal sense limitations (mis-interpretation, mis-calculation, sense affecting powers, etc). If you can't sense your destination with a targeting sense, then you must make an attack roll to hit it. I would recommend reading over the "Perceiving The Target Location; Misteleporting" section of the book. It is on page 149 of Original 5th Ed.

    In summation:

    (1) You need to be able to perceive the place you want to Teleport to, and if you can't you may land off target of the location.

    (2) Safe Blind prevents the traveler(s) from taking damage due to landing in a solid object. It does not let you perceive the target location, and thus you may find yourself in a convenient viper trap.

    Hope this was helpful

    :)
