  1. Total Recall (the new one) Overall I liked it. There were a few bits of tech/setting that were hard to swallow, but that's sometimes an issue with sci fi as a genre.

In my effort to catch more classic movies I've missed, my mom reccomended http://www.afi.com/100years/movies.aspx Anyone else have any good lists of "must see" movies? That one seemed a good starting point, or at least a place to grab a few films from. I've seen about half of the top 25, and agree in general. I also like a nice genre diverse list.

  2. A Clockwork Orange

    Soylent Green

Continuing my foray into movies I probably should have seen before, but never got around to. Clockwork Orange was good, but not to be watched lightly. Soylent Green might have been better if I didn't know the secret behind what was going on, but I doubt it. Both interesting takes on the near future from the past.

Charlie's Angels. Retro-campy fun. And cleavage, oh my, the cleavage. I don't think there is a single frame in that movie that doesn't have a pair of boobs in it, and generally 2-4.

I'm also watching Todd, and the Book of Pure Evil. My friend who recommended it described it "Like Buffy, but campier with heavy metal." 4 episodes in, I'm prone to agree. A little more awkward highschool humor then I like, but overall fun.

The Stallone version nailed the sets and even had an appearance by an ABC Warrior. Beautiful to look at. Bad plot and acting.

The Urban version lacked on sets. It was, however, perfect on plot and characterization.

Pretty much my opinion. Stallone's Dredd had the right look to it. Dredd the movie felt right.

Just watched the Stallone version, and both of you are spot on. It looked and felt like a scifi distopian future. The plot and acting was as campy and poor as I remembered it.

Prince of Persia:sands of time. I need to remember this one for next time someone drags out the "All videogame to movie movies suck" line. It wasn't great, but held together OK. The Wife put it in the queue and we watched it together, evening well spent.

Das Boot. If there is a more classic submarine movie out there, I'm unaware of it. I watched the extended version, something like 3.5 hours in the black deeps of the ocean. Worth watching.

    Good luck.

But part of me wants to ask, instead of "worst film ever" wouldn't it be better use of your time to watch the "best films ever" instead? (you know see the best humankind can do, instead of the worst)

I do that as well. Whenever I think of a "classic" I've not seen, I drop it into the queue. As an example, I have Das Boot sitting on my coffee table right now.

But I am a fan of schlocky cheeze.

    Mystery Men

"We struck down evil with the mighty sword of teamwork and the hammer of not bickering" -The Shoveler

Everyone who plays super-hero RPGs needs to watch this movie. The cast? Those are the PCs. You want to know how your game would translate to the big screen? This is it.

You might aim to be The Avengers, but end up as the Mystery Men.

A girl would possibly be more into it -- mother-daughter issues are if anything the overweening theme of the film. With each of them having valid reasons for what they do and both being deeply flawed.

One of the big issues in selecting movies for The Boy (who is six) is that he hasn't figured out that it will all work out OK in the end. Well, at least for any movie he is going to watch for the next decade. Brave has bad things happen to characters, and not just for a short while. And they get worse. And don't get resolved until the very end.

He did watch despicable me this afternoon. The only problem he had was when the girls got sent back for a bit.

    How was Battleship?

Average? You need to ignore the fact that it was "based" on the game. But for a basic alien invasion/maverick looser pulls it together when the chips are down/Hollywood military action movie it was worth the time to watch it on Netflix. I would not pay money to own it, or even see it in the theaters. But I would (and did) give it two hours of my life. And don't feel cheated at that. Would have been better with a beer or two. There are plot holes if you go looking for them, some worse then others. If you saw previews and thought that it looked interesting, watch it. But if you don't, you aren't missing anything huge.
