  1. Re: Some newbie rules questions Thank you Torchwolf for the page numbers! I keep missing these simple little things and all of you on these boards are being a BIG help! I think I almost have my brain wrapped around this, but am still a little confused. One of my players has the power "small claws" for a 1/2d6 of Hand-toHand killing which has an endurance cost of 1. Hero Builder shows this power as coming to a total of 2d6+1 after str is added in. Is this because a power like this adds onto your normal attack? Also, the power has an endurance cost of 1, but being it seems your str is ebing added in does it mean that you add that one end to the normal powers end (which would 2 I believe, the character is str 20)?
  2. Re: Some newbie rules questions Okay, so continuing my dumb questions, does anyone know WHERE in the Basic Rulebook this is covered? I can't for the life of me find it. Is there a flat rate for how much a normal attack costs in endurance, or is it determined by something else? Also, does the normal attack cost in Endurance stack with the cost of a power, or does that replace it?
  3. Re: Some newbie rules questions Thank you all for all your help! I did a quick run through a basic combat with a player today and we ran into a few more simple things that I thought I'd ask you kind folks. I feel this is a REALLY dumb question, but does a normal attack cost endurance? Also, how do multiple attacks work (as in the maneuver)?
  4. Re: How Much XP to Award? Oh my goodness Rapier, that is an awesome idea to suck excess xp up and not have to fess up to making a mistake as a gm!
  5. (note: I accidental posted this to the official rules question section before noticing the brihgt yellow notice at the top of the page telling me not to do that. I couldn't figure a way to delete that post, whats the proper way/etiquette to do so?) So prepping for our first game of heros system, using basic rule book and Champions. I've run into a few (more) things I'm not sure of. I have during the first encounter some icy areas of the battlefield. My understanding at this point is that it will count as "poor footing" Pg 97 BR, and while in it characters will be at -1 DCV unless they can pass a Breakfall roll. About that I have two questions, 1) is that something they take every segment and 2) what happens here specifically, and in general when a skill roll is called for and the character doesn't have said skill? Along those lines, what would the best kind of roll be for trying to walk/run/fly throw an area having some kind of danger in it (like an electrical current)? Would it be some kind of static acrobatics or dexterity roll, or to give the "challenge" an attack value and just have it strike every time you move through it? Also, we are (at least initially) using grid maps for combat, each square representing 1m. What is everyone's thoughts on how to count diagonal movement in that case, 1m or two?

  7. Re: How Much XP to Award? Just so I know I'm understanding things right, XP works exactly like the points you have at character creation, correct?
  8. So prepping for our first game of Hero System. We are starting with the Basic Rule book and a Champions setting. The only thing in either of those rule books I could find on how much xp to give wasn't very helpful (pg 83 BR). From the suggestion there it seems that the most a player could earn for a night of gaming is 5 xp, and for a champions game that seems like powering up will be REALLY slow in the coming. Am I missing something from the champions book or does any have some good suggestions on how much xp to hand out?
  9. Re: Helmet that blocks mental attacks Thanks again for all the help! Although his ego isn't small, I was hopping of having the helmet there as a way for the players to potentially take him down either now or later, so I intend on leaving his mental defenses without it low. I'm not actually sure if it will matter because I'm not sure which characters the players are basing their characters on yet, so they might not even have any mental attacks.
  10. Re: Helmet that blocks mental attacks Okay, NOW I understand. I wasn't getting that OIF was a sub-category of Focus, not it's own thing. I get it now! Thank you all for being so helpful! As far as his EGO and other stats I'm still putting in last minute tinkering. I'm not revealing his full back story to begin with, and as we are re-telling the universe it's not wholly based on cannon at all. I'm making Prof. X and Magneto step brothers that grew up together as a rational for their close ties and vicious parting of ways.
  11. Re: Helmet that blocks mental attacks Alright, thank you so much! I can see that is exactly what I am looking for sadly I am still having some problems wrapping my brain around all the different terms for the system. I have a suspicion one of the issues is that I'm starting with just the Basic Rules book, but hopefully you will continue to be helpful and patient with me. So "OIF" is a term I've seen a few places for me and have NO idea what it means. I found it in the glossary but can't find where it is in the rules. As for for how to make the helmet I understood all of what you said (now that you pointed me in the right direction) except the underlined part: "+X DMCV (and/or +Y Mental Defense) OIF Helmet (Obvious since everyone seems to know about it). Leave his natural DMCV at 5 or so and then just purchase a buttload of DMCV (in the Powers tab with those Limitations)."
  12. Good hello! I'm fairly new to Hero System, so I'm sure there is a really simple way to do this and I'm just going about it backwards, but I can't figure it out. The campaign we are doing is a re-telling of x-men and I'm getting ready to introduce Magneto. I want to have him have a large DMCV based around his helmet but the state be done in a way that if it's taken off he will lose that huge DMCV. I was trying to figure it out via complications, but I'm starting to think I'm trying to do it wrong. Any suggestions?
