  1. Re: Storn's Art & Characters thread.

Second was a blast. This is Red Ensign. Nope' date=' not communist, Canada's own crimson commando. The Canadian flag (seen on his chest there) at the time was called the "red ensign". The maple leaf came later, although it was already in the symbolic portfolio to represent Canada. All of this was related to me by the patron, BC Holmes. Who said ya can't learn stuff from doing superheroes![/quote']

Once again, Storn, I'm really happy with the way this turned out. And I'm glad you had such fun doing it.

I've been thinking of the character idea for quite a while (mostly as back-story window-dressing for my Northern Guard campaign), and was really interested to see how he might work as a commission. Love the look. Now I might hafta write up a character sheet for him.

  2. Re: Silliest Disadvantage Ever

I remember one other disadvantage that someone posted on this board, once. The character was a professional wrestler with the disadvantage: x2 STUN from folding chairs. I thought it was priceless.

  3. Re: Silliest Disadvantage Ever

What is the silliest disadvantage you have ever seen a player

    try to get away with??

In my Northern Guard campaign, Glue Girl has the Distinctive Features: Things stick to her. She always has bits of paper and office supplies stuck to her skin. She could never grow her hair long. And a cape? Forget it.

  4. Re: Silliest Disadvantage Ever

In a modern day' date=' arguably realistic "urban" setting I think I would allow it as as 5 Point Social Limitation if the character was openly gay. In a more cinematic game or one where it just wouldn't come up that much, a Quirk seems right or maybe nothing at all.[/quote']

I think campaign locale would play a role, too. I'd find it hard to imagine it being a disadvantage in the Netherlands, for instance.

  5. Re: What superhero world concept are you tired of seeing?

Interesting. I liked THE AUTHORITY when it had Jenny Sparks and her driving "we can/should make the world a better place" philosophy behind it. Now I ignore it' date=' as it is utter overblown crap (much like all the X-books). OTOH, I really, really like PLANETARY. I think it's a very cool look at a different sort of world with superhumans. It's like a darker version of Astro City, with analogs of all sorts of comics characters from all over.[/quote']

Hey! That's exactly my take on it, too.

  6. Re: I Need an Arkham Asylum Clone

Does anyone have a good name for an Arkham Asylum -style hospital/prison for the criminally insane?

My campaign uses Markham Asylum, because Markham is the name of a 'burb outside of Toronto.

    Other names:

    - The Plath Institute

    - The Dr. Cryo Memorial Clinic for the Criminally Insane (abbreviated as the "Cryo Clinic")

    - Cougar and Dark's Psychiatric Health Centre (wry reference to Something Wicked This Way Comes)

    - The Mental Health and Wellness Centre

    - The Powers for Good Institute for the Treatment of the Criminally Insane

    BCing you

  7. Re: Villainy Amok - What Would *You* Like To See

There are actually more than one way to approach this. Just off the top of my head I know the Silver Age JLA fought the Crime Syndicate (dimensional opposites)' date=' evil robot doubles, and (I [i']think[/i]) clones.

How about the version where suddenly the players realize they've been playing the clones all this time...?

  8. Re: Atlantis

I need some help coming up with villains for a superheroic-level game set in the Sunken city of Atlantis. Most of the villains will either be mutant monsters or mystical whatevers' date=' and the inherent tech level is a bit low (with magic subbing for tech whereever possible).[/quote']

If you have a Digital Hero subscription, look for Leviathan in issue 4.

  9. Re: You never had a character with ____ Powers?

So' date=' is there some archetype you never played? or power your PCs never had?[/quote']

I'm GM more often than not, so I don't get to be a player too often.

I've always wanted to play an interesting (but at the same time useful) underwater character. I've even drafted out my character concept a few times. But I've never had the chance to play her.

Actually, that's not completely true, because when I played Zodiac in V&V (character had the equivalent of 12 multiforms, each with powers of a particular sign of the zodiac), Picses had underwater powers.

I've never been (and I don't think any of my PCs have done) a gadgeteer.

  10. Re: What have you used Hero for?

What have you used Hero for' date=' as player or GM? In your opinion, did it "work" for that particular campaign, genre, or setting? Why or why not?[/quote']

    I've used Hero for:

    Four colour hero campaigns

"The Hole" -- a cross-genre campaign based on an article in Pyramid

A port of White Wolf's Mage

    A Star Trek campaign

    A Traveller-esque campaign

    A Fantasy Hero campaign

    Some other points:

    - The Bawon is extremely lewd and sexual

    - He is always hungry (because death is ravenous)

    - He wears sunglasses with one lens removed. That's because his two eyes do different things: one watches the entire universe and the other guards his food.

    - The Bawon is also the last hope for extremely sick children, if he can be persuaded that a child shouldn't die.

    - He's the head of an entire group (nanchon, or nation) of death spirits called Gedes who include Bawon Lakwa, Bawon Cemetaire, Bawon Criminel, Bawon Zonbi, and others.

I've already said this to you via e-mail, but I'll be giddy in public, too... I am absolutely in love with this piece. I think it captures everything I could ever have wanted in the character image.

I'm glad to hear that Dragon's Gate is available, and I'm gonna pester my local game store to see if they are carrying a copy.

One comment that I will make (and you can decide if it's worth acting on): about a month or so ago, I went to your web site to see if the book was available (I was thinking of ordering it). I was on the right page, and I was trying to quickly answer one question: has the product already been printed or not? That is to say, is the product available now?

Because I couldn't see anything that leaped out at me and said, "Available now!", I put my search aside and figured I'd come back to it another day. And a month or more has passed. That one little factoid probably would have been the difference between me buying the thing right then and there or not.

I'm very fond of most of the stuff produced for 2300AD (Nyutekundu was one of my favourites). 2300AD tends to be more hard SF, though.

Also, some of the Traveller adventures published in the short-lived Megatraveller Journal were really good.

Ben Bova has a great book called Welcome to Moonbase that's basically written like the instruction manual for a newcomer to the moon. Interesting points that he mentions:

    - lower gravity is great for geriatric care, so there may be a lot of older people coming to the moon

    - you can fly under your own power on the moon. All you need are some light wings (built like a hangglider) Great sporting opportunity.

    - Water would be a highly prized commodity.

John M. Ford's book, Growing Up Weightless is also a really interesting book that speculates about life on the moon.

Captain Canuck! (I remember seeing several issues of Captain Canuck when I was a kid, but I never owned one myself. Mostly because the writing seemed so lame)

I can't remember if The Spirit of '76 (who appeared in a 1976 issue of The Invaders) had a US flag motif. He dressed in 18th century "revolution-era" clothes.

Union Jack (from _The Invaders_ and other comics).

    Captain Britain.

The Americommando (a DC Captain America clone in old issues of _Freedom Fighters_). And his sidekick Rusty.

And wasn't there a Davedevil villain with a flagsuit theme in Miller's days? I remember him taking these red-white-and-blue pills. Can't remember his name, though.

Plus, one of my favourite comics called (if I remember correctly) simply _The American_ about a team of soldiers who each do a tour of duty as The American so that it seems like The American has been around since the 1940s. If they survive, they get to retire and earn a cut of The American merchandising.

    - The Phoenix with Judson Scott

    - The Powers of Matthew Starr

Both of those were pretty bad shows.
