    Since I don't expect to run them into unavoidable combats on a regular basis, I'm not so much worried about them getting knocked out - I want them to fear that, so they won't just charge into avoidable combats.

  2. I have a problem.

     

    I'm working on a Fantasy World, and know that my widest audience is going to be Herophiles.

     

    Trouble is, I don't care for the way Hero handles End & Stun for the level of play I want.

     

    I want heroic characters, for whom a battle is an Event. I want them to worry about multiple battles in a single day.

     

    I want my mages to have to worry about how much energy they've spent - to know that they aren't going to be able to cast a dozen spells in a day.

     

    I don't want PCs spending End like it's water, only to get it all back in a minute of rest.

     

    Now the second I can do by means of an End reserve, though I'd prefer to avoid that.

     

    But with Hero's Recovery system, the first and third are issues. A tank fighter - who could, easily, avoid Body damage entirely, need only rest for a minute, and all his Stun is back, and he's fresh as a daisy. Even if he pushes his Strength a couple of times, he'll be fine in that same minute.

     

    I want my Players to know that their characters cannot engage in dozens of combats in a single day without rest. I want them to know that massive expenditures of Endurance will tire their characters out.

     

    I thought about using the LTE rules for both End and Stun, but I'm not sure about that.

    Checkmate is a toughie. As with another, he's very difficult to affect with Mental powers, and his intelligence is not defined as a superpower - it's just him, at 38 Int. It would be very difficult to explain that away.

     

    If that were a non-issue - they grant his intelligence, for instance, just indicating that it unhinged him, or some such, he would assume - as many others would - extra-dimensional situations, use his intelligence to convince them he was cured, leave, and build a machine to send him home.

    Kodiak's sister was a late bloomer, and not having to worry about protecting her if their 'family' enemies found them was a relief -- the time it took to figure just what her powers were was a little more nerve wracking...

     

    Speedzone has a much easier time dealing with Janice in armor, than the time the Examiner decided to giver her Speedzone's powers (leaving him powerless). Even though the fact her powers come from a focus leaves her vulnerable since his main 'hunted' knows who he is in secret ID...

     

    My problem exactly. Checkmate's DNPCs are his wife, Laura - the Battlesuit 'Iron Star', and his son, Denis Jr. is the mutant Control (Another character of mine.)

    St. Patrick is never captured, never goes to Ireland, and Christianity either doesn't get to Ireland, or gets there much later.

    Apropos of nothing, my wife played a character like that. She was a descendant of Arthur, in some fashion, but her family tree required time travel - at the very least - to compile, and an advanced degree in temporal physics to understand.

    No one told her it would hurt so much. Diana had volunteered - much to her mother's chagrin - to undergo the Trial of Hestia, taking up the mantle of the island's protector. Unfortunately, that meant that she was burned alive on Hestia's Hearth.

     

    Her sacrifice was not in vain, however, and Hestia re-formed her from the ashes that were all that was left of her body. With assistance from the other gods, she was made more durable than before. Strong, fast, hard - very hard - to kill. And, having died by fire in a noble and selfless cause, fire was no longer her enemy, but her servant. She could summon those fires at will, either to kill or heal, to lift her into the air, or to melt a tunnel through the hardest rock.

    I picked up - no longer sure where - the following equation for a rough estimate.

     

    ((Inches of Height x 0.08898)^2)*(Inches of Height))x0.00136)x47

     

    That is, in plain language, Height in inches, times .08898, the product is then squared. That result is multipled once more by the height in inches. The result of that is multipled by .00136, then multiplied by 47 (roughly the density of water).

     

    That calculation puts our 9' tall person at 638 lbs (or 289 kg)

    Mrs. Who watched the entity - once her companion - as it sank further and further into Shadow and Darkness, until no light could save it.

     

    She mourned, then, and headed off to her work, but she mourned too early. Some are born with Will beyond any known. Yes, her companion had fallen to the Darkness, but she had never surrendered.

     

    One day, the Darkness was disturbed by a new force. Less than the spirits of fallen stars, but far greater than the spirits of physical beings. One of its slaves had thrown off her chains with a mighty, horrific blast. Forever changed, she was not at Who's level, and barred forever from her company, but she remained undeterred.

     

    She stands as living (more or less) proof that even those who fall farthest into darkness can remain themselves, so long as they never surrender. Now she travels the darkest places, finding those who still fight and aiding them.

     

    In a fit of whimsy, she calls herself Mrs. Nothing, but her enemies simply know her as the Dark Star.

    Checkmate and Guardian would leave it alone - neither is interested in trying to make things 'better'.

     

    Macha, on the other hand, or Fianna, would very likely go back to Britain just before the Romans showed up and try very hard to get the tribes working together in time to shatter any Roman incursion into the Isles.

    And just imagine the surprise on Bats' face when he sends a dozen or more batarangs at Cyke, and all of them get knocked out of the air within ten feet by one optic blast... That is definitely the kind of thing Cyclops has done, and has been shown to be very good at...

    Checkmate gave it deep, longterm, logical thought before becoming a hero. His reasons were long and complex, but mostly ran off of the very real likelihood of eventual capture and losing access to his studies.

     

    Assuming that weren't an issue, he would simply be doing to heroes what he does to villains. He'd bait them with clues, and when they showed up to stop him, he'd have contingencies in place to deal with them - either other villains he'd hired to fight, or agents he'd trained.

     

    But in neither case does Checkmate act violently, and all those who work for him are the same, or they don't work for him. Violent crime is far more likely to receive a high level response than just quietly robbing a bank, after all - especially if the robbery occurs at night, when there's no one to be hurt.

    One that I never played, but wanted to, was an alien scientist / geek. Weak as any five year old kid, no social skills, unhandsome...

     

     

    On his home planet... On Earth, he had a 60 Strength...

    Checkmate's disads are already largely total. Code Vs. Killing, Emotionless and Cold, Ruthless... Nothing much would change for him - assuming that the boy could even control a mind as complex as his... In the game worlds where I run him, he's among the smartest, if not THE smartest person on the planet, and he has mental defense backing that up... His mind is very difficult for mentalists to get a hold on...

    More than a few of my characters do that... The ones who can get away with it, anyway... The 6'1" Guardian doesn't look much like a victim, no matter what she does, so she's not very successful with that...

     

    Others will tend to run the jogging trails, almost begging for someone to try to victimise them...

    I use a scale in my Meta Storm campaign that is based on power and flexibility. Specific power types would then be noted in the Metahuman's file.

     

    It goes like this:

     

    Power Definition

    Omega ≈ 800 tons force in primary ability, or more.

    Alpha ≈ 200 tons force in primary ability.

    Beta ≈ 50 tons force in primary ability.

    Gamma ≈ 13 tons force in primary ability.

    Delta ≈ 3 tons force in primary ability.

    Epsilon ≈ 1,500 lbs force in primary ability.

    Theta ≈ 400 lbs force in primary ability.

     

    Class Definition

    3 Severely restricted (1 form/type of usage)

    2 Heavily restricted (≈ 2-3 forms/types)

    1 Restricted (≈ 3-4 forms/types of usage)

    0 Lightly restricted (≈ 4-5 forms/types)

    Prime No restrictions noted.

     

    Thus, a raw brick, who didn't have more than one trick but had hulk like strength, would be an Omega 3, while the Smart Hulk would be an Omega Prime - very dangerous, you go first.
