  1. Re: A D&D paladin in my Marvel Avengers campaign.

My current Champions character is Pendragon, a WWII British flagsuit (brick in armor). As she's a _female_ descendent of King Arthur, she hides her gender behind full-plate armor and sometimes illusions. Anyway, she rides a flying horse, and I decided that this was the same warhorse -- 'Leaping Silver' -- that Arthur rode in the legends. The warhorse (a mare) has Extradimensional Movement (linked to Flight) to allow her to return to her stable in Avalon, the Isle of the Blessed. Perhaps something like that would work for your paladin's warhorse?

With Extradimensional Movement, your warhorse could go to the realm of your character's god when you don't need her, and be pampered and cared for by divine grooms and stablehands. Ex-D movement also means the warhorse is always just a call away, and your character won't have to worry about shelter, food or safety for the warhorse.

Don't forget the mind-link so that you can call it. Either that or give the horse the transdimensional advantage on it's hearing, so that it can hear you call.

  2. Re: Firefly

One of my friends at work has a copy of the Serenity game. He says that it gives a pretty good background of the setting, all the way from original colonization up to the 'present'. Has anyone else seen it? This seems like it would be a great resource for conversion to Hero.

  3. Re: Atmosphere

You might think about a series of domes for different neighborhoods connected by tunnels either under the surface or made of the same thing the domes are made from. You would reserve large domes for important areas of town. You could also have some neighborhoods under the surface and make them less well-to-do areas of town. The people who are wealthiest live under the domes with the less affluent living further from the surface.

As a side note there would be almost no light from the sun. It would look like a really bright star from Pluto. Did you have any ideas about artificial sources of light? Even street lights would make for one depressing place. (Yeah I know it's a game and you could ignore the problem with a lack of natural lighting contibuting to depression, but I might WANT to build a domed city on Pluto someday and need some ideas on how to handle this problem ;))

And as for air you could capture a comet (you are basically in the kuiper belt) and tap the water ice in it and break it down with electrolysis. Hydrogen (for fuel) and Oxygen. Then when you burn the hydrogen, thereby combining it with oxygen, you create more water.

Did I depart from the actual question enough? Sorry, I couldn't help myself.

You would lose way too much energy in breaking down the water to Hydrogen and Oxygen for it to be worthwhile to burn the Hydrogen as a fuel. It would only work if you used the Hydrogen for Fusion power.

  4. Re: USAF studies teleportation

I would consider the $25,000 well-spent if only it meant we could put such nonsense behind us.

    Psychic Teleportation.

Keith "I want a grant to study psychic teleportation" Curtis

Apparently, he was just doing a survey of the ongoing research. I would love to be given $25,000 to read other peoples research papers.

  5. Re: Comics are getting too steamy...

While I know some folks will disagree on either side, I am okay with it in comics with the following provisos:

    1) It has to make sense for the character.

    2) It should add something to the story and not be overused.

    3) Like movies, I think comics should have ratings on them (and most companies already do this, so no harm no foul) of some sort to let the buyer know what he/she (or their kid) is getting into.

These are all very good points. Sex, like anything else, should be used to advance the story or characterization as appropriate. It shouldn't be used for shock value any more than random character death or massive OOC actions should be.

  6. Re: Moderately Large Creatures and DCV

I've been designing a couple of larger creatures for my setting, and they seem fine except when it comes to their DCV rating.

This is because of the Negatives to DCV when creatures are larger.

In the Fantasy Hero Bestiary, They have a Chimera ( 291 pts), which is merely "large" ie -2DCV. Its writeup seems fine, until I remember that LIm.

Which changes its Base 5 DCV to 3

Ok so now the Average NPC townsman will hit it no problem

( Of course he will get killed first )

But vs Startting 75/75 PCs this thing will tend to be minced, as at worst to Hit any desired spot will be DCV 11

    OK.

So I am designing this beast, roughly analogous to a War Elephant.

Its Lumbering - SPD 2, but

has a Fairly High Ground Speed 10" - with no NCV that is it can only do 10"

but can do it all the time.

It's also not supposed to be the most Dextrous thing in the world either (12 )

SO now it has a base DCV of 4

However it counts as 'Enormous' ie -4 DCV

This gives it a DCV of 0.

ANY peasant can hit it with an unbalance rock....

The Beast has the Campaign Max Armour. 8 rPD, and about 10 PD with a couple of weak Spots with less armour, and unarmoured Eyes.

The Idea was that 'Heros' would perhaps shoot the thing in the Eyeball, or in other vulnerable spots, thus enraging it.

But Even using the -11 DCV penalty to Hit something right in the Eyeball

    that makes DCV 11

That's not a difficult shot for anyone, let alone a 75/75 PC

to hit this thing in the Vitals is only DCV 8....... probably an 11- roll or better for any PC...

My question is : How do you guys run larger creatures ?

Do you give them a throbbingly High DEX to start with ?

Or do you ignore the size penalty?

Or do you give the things 'Mystical DCV' Levels ?

Whilst this size thing seems great for Dragons and such, I'm not sure for creatures like the two mentioned.

I generally ignore the campaign maximums for 'critters'. I would give it enough armor to survive a few hits as well as tweaking the 'called shot' penalty for hitting it in the eye.

  7. Re: Help with a power

Slot one could also be defined as Damage Reduction. It's not really +DCV, it just spreads out the energy of the attack so it doesn't all hit him.

The 'bigger but weaker' aspect seems like it could be modeled by either a Multipower with a lot of Ultra slots each working it's way up the AE ladder, resulting in a lower PD/ED for the field but a larger area, or a VPP defined as only FF and the only advantages that can be added are various area of effect levels.

  8. Re: Nanotech!

I don't get off even that easy. It would actually feel better if I were depressed' date=' because at least [i']then[/i] I'd have an excuse.

On the earlier comment about Luddites: even though I am typing this on a collection of mass-proiduced devices, I am beginning to think that if the Luddites had won a lot of really horrible things, from Atomic Weapons to Peak Oil, would never have come to pass and western Civilization might actually have a shot at surviving past 2025.

Also, a whole lot of people would have never been born, because their ancestors would have died of starvation, or disease that could have been treated if technology had advanced.

    Nothing is one sided.

  9. Re: Question for you Traveller fans.

Do any of you use the Classic Traveller reprints as a resource?

I don't own any of them, but not for lack of desire to. I still have some of the original little books, and for nostalgia value they are great. Boy do i rememebr spending a lot of time rolling up characters, incluidng watching them die for no apparent reason.

I've only got the originals, and I have to say that the GURPS aliens books go into vastly greater detail. If you can find any of the Megatraveller aliens books that were published, those are great resources too.

  10. Re: This Age and that Age

So how long is an "Age" anyway? I get the decade' date=' century, millenium, and I know an Era is pretty flexible. But is there a commonly accepted time frame for an Age?[/quote']

'Age' and 'Era' both tend to be event driven. Something happens that changes the world significantly, and we move into a new 'Age'.

  11. Re: Hello

Welcome! You'll need a few basic tips...

    5. This crew has been super helpful for my campaign. Their advice will help you create, run, and maintain a fun game. Don't be afraid to ask any question. Remember, there are no stupid questions except the ones Enforcer84 asks.:D

    Have fun!

What about the ones that he doesn't ask?

  12. Re: If Superman represents a god, then winged heroes represent angels?

Reading the X-men I've noticed that Warren Worthington's charming good looks and attitude towards crime fighting makes him more of an angel. However' date=' Marvel doesn't imply that its characters are god-like. And then again, reading Kingdom Come from DC has made me realise that Hawkman, alongside the future JLA is called one of seven angels. I don't get it! Hawkman is more of an anti-hero, not an angellic hero! Weird, huh?[/quote']

Actual biblical depictions of angels are more in line with Hawkmans attitude than contemporary beliefs about how angels should act.

    They were generally pretty militant.

  13. Re: Is Power Girl/Kara Starr the DCUs Gladiator?

That wasn't pre-Crisis' date=' it was post-Crisis, and IIRC post-Zero Hour as well. Which was one Legion reboot ago.[/quote']

    You sure?

I thought that it was in the pre-crisis continuity, after the crisis, but before they retconned it into the (first) post crisis continuity.

I could easliy be wrong, It's been a while since I read those old issues.
