  1. Re: Computer translations of Hero that you would like to see StGrimblefig - At the risk of derailing the thread, I am intrigued as well. I hadn't read those Daily Illuminators before. Brian Fargo did an interview somewhat recently where he talks about his Interplay days in general and that in particular. He stressed the SJ didn't like the violence. From your post, it sounds like maybe that wasn't the only issue between the two parties. I guess we will never know for sure. Although I would love to read interviews from the all the involved people today about it. (I was a *huge* fan of Black Isle and that whole saga, Fallout included, is interesting.) Getting the thread back on track, I would love to see a more "traditional" RPG (third-person isometric, turn based combat, etc.) done using the Hero system. Too many MMOs and Oblivion games for me (although they can be fun too for awhile). If I were producing one, the question for me is really genre. I really like the published Fantasy Hero settings...but fantasy RPGs are a dime-a-dozen. Could you make a Tuala Morn, Valdorian Age, or even (especially) a Turakian Age RPG standout enough from the pack? Maybe a Dark Champions or Pulp Hero RPG would be more unique. Then, again people have a tendancy to shy away from non-Fantasy CRPGs. That train of thought could go on ad infinitum...and I still don't have an answer to it
  2. Re: Computer translations of Hero that you would like to see Speaking as a programmer myself, I think that a computer implementation of the Hero rules is totally doable. There is no technical reason preventing someone from doing it. The only thing missing would of course be a human GM.
  3. Re: Computer translations of Hero that you would like to see I forgot about Chrono Trigger. It was an awesome game. I guess I was thinking of a time travel game like the Timepiece/Stopwatch setting in GURPS Time Travel (or dimension traveling like GURPS Infinite Worlds). I can't think of any "western-style" RPG example. Chrono Trigger aside, I can't think of any other CRPG example. Any one else have any examples? (Some games like Sonic CD had time travel elements but I don't count them for this discussion.)
  4. Re: Computer translations of Hero that you would like to see This could be expanded to "A true RPG computer game would have to cover every contingency." And in fact is why some argue that CRPGs are not really RPGs. Personally, I think they both offer related, yet distinct forms of entertainment. If by contingency, you mean "any character, any genre," I think throwing everything into one game would make for an unwiedly and baroque beast at best and a "jack of all trades, master of none" at worst. I imagine something along the lines of Baldur's Gate, Planescape: Torment, Jade Empire, Mass Effect, TES: Oblivion, Marvel Ultimate Alliance and Call of Cthulu all rolled into one. IMHO, much better to restrict one game to one genre (unless you are doing time travel or dimension-hopping--why hasn't anyone done a good time travel CRPG?).

  6. I am aiming this question at Steve (assuming that he can comment--in no way will I construe an answer as "official" ) but I am curious as the thoughts of the larger community also. Assuming the Hero System is licensed to a "good" computer game developer, the project is greenlit and DOJ has the power to dictate the type/genre of game that would be made (i.e. perfect and ideal conditions--no limitations), what would you Hero computer game (or games) would you like to see? A Champions Action/RPG (or plain RPG)? A Fantasy Hero RPG set in one of the eras of the Hero Timeline? Star Hero? Pulp Hero? Dark Champions? Name your dream digital translation(s) of the Hero System.

Not to derail the thread but, this is the first time I have heard someone say that the Mayan calendar has been misinterpreted in that manner. For my own personal curiosity, could you point out a few books and/or other references where this is discussed?

Re: Other HU Fantasy Hero Settings Kind on-topic, since there are no Malvans, are the Elder Worm going to get competition from the Kings of Edom or are the Kings of Edom members of the Elder Worm race themselves? (Maybe this has been answered in some Hero book, but if so, I don't have it.) Is it basically going to be Elder Worm vs. Gods or are things going to be more chaotic then that? The impression I got from the Hero Universe PDF is that things wouldn't be as simple as "Elder Worm = EVIL, Gods = GOOD".
  9. Re: Other HU Fantasy Hero Settings I just got done with At the Mountains of Madness by Lovecraft. I loved the idea behind the aeons-old city of the Old Ones. Having read about Thun and Ureth-Kalai in The Turakian Age and The Valdorian Age I always got the impression that the Elder Worm beings were very Cthulthu-esque. Will the The Primeval Age be a mix of places like what the city in Lovecraft's story would have been like at its heyday along with the extremely high fantasy "Gods walking on the Earth and fighting divine wars" sort of setting? If so, I would like to hear some of your thoughts on the mixing of the two.

    Re: Tuala Morn Well, here was one question I had: Not only is the blurb unusually long, but it also seems to indicate a more story based setting. Both The Turakian Age and The Valdorian Age have metaplots as far as the history of the Hero Universe. Kal-Turak conquers Ambrethel and later conquers it again as Takofanes. There is the central tension between the decent of man as represented by Elweir and the ascent of man as represented by Valdor. But, I wouldn't really say that these aren't as strong metaplots in their respective settings as the one suggested by the Tuala Morn blurb. Will the book feature a much stronger focus on the metaplot of the setting compared to the other setting books DOJ has published in the past?
  11. Similar to my Tuala Morn thread, I would be interested to hear any of the Hero staff comment on maybe some of the directions that they are thinking about taking with the unpublished, future FH settings.

    I know the book is still a good 3-6 months out at least, but I was wondering if we could get some more juicy tibits of information on Tuala Morn (i.e. a distincitve characteristic of the setting, how magic works, etc.) I remember before The Valdorian Age was released that there was an interesting thread on how sorcery worked in the setting and how it contributed to the swords and sorcery feel. Any little bit of info on the world of Tuala Morn like that would be cool. Another question I have (if Steve is comfortable answering it), is what game system was the book originally written for. It has been stated a couple of times that Steve already had most of it done for another publisher. I am just curious if it was GURPS, D&D, Rolemaster, HARP, Palladium or what.
  13. Does anyone know where I can find more information on the older Fantasy Hero settings Western Shores and Broken Kingdoms? (Especially where to look to buy them or buy a PDF of them?) I searched on the boards with limited success so I thought I would just ask. Thanks.

Re: 2006 Schedule Blurbs I have to agree with Archermoo (except I don't have enough money for 1 of everything ) Although I understand getting upset with updated material as opposed to all new original material, for some of us (like me), I have only known about HERO for about a year so all of the books are new to me. I know that the complaint was about Champions material and I am more of a Fantasy/Star Hero guy. But, from reading between the lines in some of Steve's posts, I think that a lot of the Hero Universe stuff like Turakian Age, Valdorian Age, Terran Empire *is* totally new for 5th edition...again at least for Fantasy/Star Hero.
