I've been re-reading some of Robert R. McCammon's short stories and I came across one that I had forgotten about. "Night Calls the Green Falcon" is the story of an aged and destitute former serial movie star who faces off with a serial killer in modern day Hollywood. It's even written in pulp serial fashion. The story can be found in the anthology "Blue World" and online here.

I'm running a Lost Worlds PBP campaign and I needed some clipart to represent an NPC Sailor of the period. I remembered one of Steve Mqueen's finest films "The Sand Pebbles". doing a search I ran across this site It has a wealth of information on not only the movie but the actual events and the history of the Yangtze patrols. This info is not only invaluable for adventure resources it could really help in character backgrounds. espescially in instances where the character needs to justify knowing how to speak chinese or maybe how he learned Kung Fu. anyway, good stuff and worth a look.

I enjoy the heck out of Hero games stuff. I have been a fan since 1st edition Champions, and I have spent hundreds of dollars on their games over the years, I just thought that in this instance the product may have been over priced, and I posed the question. I think Hero puts out great stuff, and I would think they would like to hear from their customers, not only gushing fanboy praise but the occasional note of concern. I have no doubt that the content of the product is good-thats not an issue. I just think for the amount of material you are getting, the PDF price is a bit high. but it looks like the thread is turning into something it shouldnt be, and I don't want to go down that path. once people start posting "What else can we find to complain about?" That tells me that the spirit in which my post was given was misinterpreted.

Re: Thrilling Places! I hear you. a lot of what I have seen lately is TOO generic. It's like the companies are trying to hedge their bets by trying to appeal to everyone. but what you end up getting is less a supplement than a watered down version of information you could glean off the net. they just gather it, repackage it and try and sell it.

Re: Help Me Pick A Book Man I hate the term "Steam-Punk". there is nothing "punk" about the Victorian era. Anyway, If you go the GURPS route be sure and check out the Castle Falkenstein books that were adapted to GURPS. they are excellent.

I was reading the thrilling places thread and heard mention that the book was available in pdf. I went to the online store and saw that a print copy was $26.99 and a PDF copy went for $18.99 maybe i'm wrong, but shouldnt a pdf product have a CONSIDERABLY discounted price over a print product? I mean, i'm using my paper, my ink, etc. the savings appears to be all in the retailers favor. I don't mean to sound cheap but my free-wheeling days of buying any supplement that hits the racks are long gone. I now have a family and a very tight gaming budget, so i need to make my bucks stretch as far as I can. and PDF's help me strecth my dollars. I'm thinking that a PDF product should be AT LEAST half the cost of a print product. I dont mind letting a guy make a buck, but in this case it looks like I would be getting the short end of the deal. I guess the bottom line is while i would like to get a copy of Thrilling Places the price for a PDF just doesnt make sense to me. So for now I'll take a pass. I dont get a nifty new sourcebook to oogle and Hero doesnt make a sale. nobody wins.

I ran across a movie this weekend that really surprised me. It was called “The Quest”, It starred Jean-Claude Van Damme a B-list movie star who had a string of successful action movies in the 90’s. The Quest absolutely drips with pulpy goodness. Van Damme plays a pick-pocket in depression-era New York who somehow finds his way to representing the United states in a secret martial arts tournament in Asia. It’s billed as a martial arts film but don’t be fooled, the movie is a pulp masterpiece worthy of any of the magazines of the era. This movie has: • Chinese Pirates • Exotic locales • A heavyweight boxing champ named “Maxie” Devine • A Feisty girl-reporter • A Zeppelin • Hidden temples in the mountains • Travel by elephant • Prussians Aristocrats with dueling scars • A priceless treasure • British Expatriate Con men • Supporting characters succumbing to an honorable yet futile death against a brutal villain. Now you put all that together, and add a contest with every Martial Art style from Monkey-Style Kung Fu to Savate to Turkish Wrestling, and you have one Whiz–bang of an adventure story.

Re: Lost world of the Warlord ain't that the truth. Its like Highlander II or any Star Wars movie made after "The Empire Strikes Back" - I simply refuse to admit it exists, it's better that way.

In the 80’s artist Mike Grell started a long running series for DC comics called The Warlord. They were the adventures of Air force pilot Travis Morgan who somehow finds himself transported to the subterranean world of Skartaris. The series had a very decent run and was one of the few truly successful Sword & Sorcery comics around. Using the mapping program in the AD&D core rules software, I recently completed my rendition of a map of the Hollow world of Skartaris that was originally published in the Warlord Annual #4 from 1985. Over at the Pulp E-Zine list we have a writing contest starting this week. http://ca.groups.yahoo.com/group/pulp_ezine/ Pulp E-zine Adventure writers Contest Submit a Mini adventure suitable for use in a Pulp oriented game. This may be a Role-playing or a Miniatures styled adventure. The adventure should be no more than 3000 words. Maps and map legends are not included in the word count. try to be as generic as possible in regard to Stats etc. the less system specific the better that way everyone can mold the adventures to their system of choice (GURPS, Hero system, .45 adventure, Two-fisted tales, Top Secret/SI, Dime Heroes, Thrilling tales, Etc.) Entrants have their choice of three adventure templates. each adventure must include aspects of all bulleted points. The first adventure is a Murder Mystery and must include the following : · San Francisco's Chinatown · politicians · A mad scientist · gunrunning The second is a Two Fisted Adventure and must include the following: · an ancient monastery · kidnappers · the supernatural · civil war Spain The third choice is an Espionage Adventure and must include the following: · An aerial dogfight (using airplanes, zeppelins, auto-gyros, and/or rocket-packs) · Hawaii · A Volcano · A Russian Countess Entries must be received no later than midnight Pacific standard time on September 23rd. Winners will be announced on October 7th. There will be prizes (to be announced) awarded for First, Second, and third place entries. All submitted entries will be made available in the files section for all to enjoy.
