  1. Re: Your "2006" Pet Gaming Projects

Here is a quick update on my Ninja Hero campaign I have been working on. I even have a title now for the campaign.

Sunday Afternoon Shaolin Kung Fu Theatre!

That is the tone I am trying for in the campaign a light hearted comical and fun Sunday afternoon shaolin kung fu romp, with moments of seroiusness and tragedy. Mostly fun tho. With Anthro Characters, Master Villains, Evil Secret societies trying to bring down the governement and control the world. Sort of a more cinematic version of Street Fighter.

Here is the Thread I started on the game to get some ideas for anthro Characters.

I am working on a webpage for the campaign but I need to learn XHTML first. It should be up in a month or so.

So far I have been having a lot of fun just need a player or two more for the game and I will get it started. Hopefully some time this month.

  2. Re: Avatar: The Last Airbender

I do everthing in hero' date=' this would be an interesting sand box to play in. The real question is do you do it as a heroic campaign or a superheroic campaign. In the earlier I'd run them as martial artist with spells and use a end pool with all of the powers bought as knowledge skills. That's how I like games these days, I can inject a lot of flavor with hero like this. In the later they'd be 250 pts characters.[/quote']

I would run it as a heroic Campaign I believe but possibly at an increased point total. May be 150 base with 50 in disadvantages or maybe 100/100 that way the benders would have more points for bending and other characters could get a few more skill levels or some more martial maneuvers.

I am not to shure how I would handle the bending itself but I am thinking that it would be best simulated with either VPP or multipower thinking that a low active cost mutlipower would be best for the idea tho.

Or would it be better to simulate it with custome Martial Maneuvers with special effects of the appropriate element?

  3. Re: Avatar: The Last Airbender

Has anyone given any thought on how to create bending as a martial art? How would you go about doing that I was thinking that you could do it with a multipower but is there any other thoughts on how you could create them?

Might even put it in my Ninja Hero campaign would be a cool addition!

  4. Re: Making a Ninja Hero Campaign with Anthro Characters

Well I am going to be starting my game soon I have three characters wish I could find some more but seems they are hard to come by here. Of the three characters I have one person who is going to play a human Mauy Thai/pitfighter. A sneaky bat character that is a Forset deamon or a Chinese Ninja. The third character is Shaolin Snake Kung Fu using Cheetah.

The camapign is shapping up nicely I have most of the first adventure written up. No w I just have to work more on background for the campaign. As well as flesh out the people in the temple trying to give them more then just stats on a character sheet.

For background I was thinking that the Shaolin Temple that is the centre of the campaign is more mystcal in nature. Basically to ad more of a mystic element to the campaign. This will give me the oppertunity to be able to have more mystical enemies as well as totally wayout Wuxia action.

I really want the campaign to have the flavour of a wild Hong Kong Action Cinema feel. Does any one have any pointers to try to potray it in a role playing session? Also if anyone has any Chinese inspired mystical/magical Items they could send my way or just some ideas so I could build a few more that would be very helpful. I am a bit at a lose for some more equips for the players and NPC's.

    Thanx

  5. Re: WF: Ninja Weapons?

Ninja Weapons, according to the UMA, are:

    Fukimi-bari

    Ninja-To

    Kusarigama or Kyogetsu Shoge

    Manrike-Gusari or Kusari-fundo

    Ashiko

    Nekote

    Shuko

    Kanzashi

    Shinobi-Zue

Data for all of these weapons can be found in the Ultimate Martial Artist.

Thank you bunches is that listt actually in the book?

Thnx that helps alot will put a skicky not in my book now! :)

  6. Re: WF: Ninja Weapons?

You have two that would cover it:

WF: Common Martial Arts Weapons (which may be purchased as a group)

WF: Uncommon Martial Arts Weapons (each of which must be purchased seperately)

    5ER pg76

Alternately you and the GM can work out a WF: Common Ninja Weapons group to use.

But there is a WF: Ninja Weapons on page 76 in 5ed revised under Common Martial Arts Weapons.

I was wondering what that 1 point WF included

  7. Re: Your "2006" Pet Gaming Projects

I will be working on my Wuxia Shaolin Temple Campaign (Still need a name for it?)

So far done most of THe back ground and setting.

Here is the thread I started last year about it.

    http://www.herogames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=37454

Well still need to finish off the Temple maps and create a few more NPC's.

And work on a few more species specific Anthropomorphic Martial arts for PC's and npc's.

Right now I am creating some Taoist magical weapons and armour.

I have a bunch of work for this year.

Have fun with all your hero projects!

  8. Re: Making a Ninja Hero Campaign with Anthro Characters

Other general side notes and decent reference material:

If you're going Shao-Lin style and want to explore a videogame adaptation thereof, Jade Empire does some neat stuff with their real-time MA engine. The game itself is utterly broken, but there's plenty of interesting material in there if you're going to start leaning towards mystic arts, as well as martial arts.

I'm sure Susano already covered the bulk of VG MA's in Ninja Hero so I won't attempt to rehash that, but if you haven't played a Fighting Game recently, I would suggest either the newest Dragon Ball Z to get a feel for "hyper" fighting, Street Fighter Alpha III (from the anniversary collection) or Tekken 5, which is one of the best pure video fighters out there. Also, Viruta Fighter 4 for it's excellent renders and fighting "feel."

Weapons combat knows no comparison to the almighty Soul Calibur II. Oh, in case this wasn't mentioned, don't forget that many martial styles also include weapons training, including Karate, Tae Kwon Do & Aikido.

Aikido! It's not just for grabs anymore!

Cool I had not really thought of looking into fighting games for insperation thanx I will have to give some of those a look see. I do not have an xbox so can not give jade empire the once over. Thank you for you suggestion is an avenue that I did not really give much thought too. I will have to dig out the few old fighting games I have and check them out for ideas Thanx

  9. Re: Making a Ninja Hero Campaign with Anthro Characters

And they are. Judo are pretty ground oriented as well and the olympic wrestling have a lot of ground elements. I always consider maneuvers like grabs and escapes have ground elements. If you read some maneuvers you will see they are talking about ground and finishing immobilization movements

True I guess I was looking for more realism then I should be I guess or was bit confused at what I was thinking and what was really possible and was there already without my seeing it was already there.

Wow that was quite the run on sentence!

  10. Re: Making a Ninja Hero Campaign with Anthro Characters

Just a note. Usually what the brazilians fight at UFC and Pride are a mix of some martial styles which they call Vale Tudo. A fight style designated to this kind of tournament. Te few ones which fight with the clean Brazilian Jiu Jitsu are the Gracie family members and Victor Belford. The Gracie family says the Jiu Jitsu are the chess of martial arts.

Not a big fan if the Gracies myself. But it seems to me that Brazilians in Pride and UFC seem to be more ground oriented is what I was getting at and if anyone had any suggestions along a more ground based martial art for the hero system.

  11. Re: Making a Ninja Hero Campaign with Anthro Characters

I do' date=' and by experience (by jaw still hurt). I could say they use Martial Strike, Offenive Strike, Martial Grab, Passing Grab, Offensive grab, Choke Hold, Martial Escape, Killing Throw, Martial Throw. The usual gym simbols here are Gorillas, Pittbull dogs (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu fighter nickname is Pitbull due the ears, mood and the brain size) and Alligators. And Brazilian Jiu Jitsu weak spot is mobility. A Capoeira master or a monkey Kung Fu master could kick the Br Jiu Jitsu figher's *** easy. But if they get in a close combat everything changes[/quote']

Thanx this really helps now I have somewhere to start from for Brazilian Jiu-Juitsu. Thanx bunches! Will have to watch more UFC and Pride to see what I can see about it too.

PS Wish I had this kind of resource when I was younger my games would have been so much more interesting and complete I think!

  12. Re: Making a Ninja Hero Campaign with Anthro Characters

Think in terms of how the style "feels" to you... then pin the animal on them.

One thing to keep in mind is how much it empazises on a particular method. I do have a quick list off the top of my head as starters...

    • Pressure points: emphasis on swift, precision strikes; snakes, several swooping breeds of birds, scorpions.
    • The "power push": empasis on immediate take-downs, sudden strikes; pretty much most that depend on initial bursts of strength, such as bulls, boars, and rams.
    • The long haul: empasis on outlasting your opponents; best for big beefy animals such as bears, elephants, horses.
    • Dodging: emphasis on... you get the idea; felines, pretty much all mustelids and rodents, even snakes.
    • Power strikes; emphasis on breaking things with careful sudden strikes, not unlike pressure points but with no actual location--best against inaminate objects; eagles, tigers, bulls.

    You get the idea?

Thanx this stuff is very helpful has given me a lot of ideas. Kung Fu is the central martial art to the campaign, being about a Shaolin Temple and all. I am encouraging the players and trying to make the NPC's with a veriety of other arts in adition to Kung Fu. To add more variety and to maybe get some rivalries between different arts happening. Making some species specific Kung Fu styles and maybe some martial arts tailored to specific animal types will really add some flavour to my campaign.

For example I am toying with the idea of making an avian martial art I am sure there could be some interesting martial maneuvers for combat during flight.

Someone else gave me a few good ideas for larger animals like bulls and other animals with antlers or horns for some maneuvers for charging and attacking with them.

The 'ole brain is working again thanx!

  13. Re: Making a Ninja Hero Campaign with Anthro Characters

Well so far I am doing well on the campaign. I am working on my First adventure and a few of the other students at the Shaolin Temple that the campaign will take place in as a base.

Also working on some of the more interesting colourful characters that populate the temple. I have a rival group of students. The Leader of the temple and a few of the charcaters that frequent the temple from time to time. If people are interested in seeing some of my NPCs I will post them for you.

I have herodesigner files for all my NPCs.

I have made the temple as a base as well.

I am still trying to come up with some species specific martial arts as well. One question I have does anyone have any experience with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu? I want to have a NPC with that martial art. Was wondering if anyone has any ideas on how to build it. It is more grappling then Japanese Ju-Jutsu as I have read and seen.

Any ideas for NPCs or campaign colour?

Any suggestions for species specific martial arts would be awesome too!

Well thanx for giving this a read and I hope you all post!

  14. Re: Making a Ninja Hero Campaign with Anthro Characters

Very cool. You looking at a historical or modern setting?

Are their going to be species specific Martial Arts?

Will you have a set number of Anthropomorphic Species to begin with?

Inquiering mind wants to know. :D

Wow I did not even think of Species Specific Martial Arts, that is an awesome Idea will have to look into doing that. I am sure avian charcaters would have different martial arts now that I think about it.

Will be modern setting near Hong Kong in an earth that is a bit different do to Humans and anthro's co-exsisting. (Some humans are not so good at the co-exsisting tho)

No I am not going to be to specific on what species you can be but I have some general package deals and will be working on them to make them more specific as the campaign goes on.

I am looking to make the campaign a modern game but with a Wuxia/mystical past that is coming to haunt the Shaolin temple the characters have come to learn martial arts. And old enemies coming back from the past to eliminate the Shaolin way of life forever sorta thing.

I think it would be cool to have a bear charcater with a Bear style kung fu, or a monkey Character with Drunken Monkey Style that would rule.

I do hope the Players go to town on making there Characters creative and interesting.

    Thanx for the Ideas!

  15. Re: Making a Ninja Hero Campaign with Anthro Characters

out of curiosity' date=' what's the Starting Points and Campaign Limits?[/quote']

I am going for 100 base/100 disadvantages, have a modified NCM with 30 being max on non figured characteristics, 6 Spd max, money for equipment, thinking about 60 active point max on powers, but of course the emphesis will be on Martial arts.

Want to have a Wuxia feel but in a modern setting.
