The following was placed in the Hero-Rules discussion for Steve Long to answer; however, I am now curious what some of you may think - so I reposted here as well. Enjoy.
Me and Sparkstealer (who will sign up onto the forum one of these days) run a game (a couple of games realy) here in Greensboro, and ocationally, some odd rules questions come up - here is the latest:
Maltese - we have a charater who has it as a native laguage; however, we are not sure how to define it as far as familuarity goes.
Here is a basic Description:
Maltese is a Semitic language of the Afro-Asiatic language family. It is derived from, and most closely related to, Arabic. Maltese also shares similarities with other North African Arabic dialects; however the language has adopted many loanwords, and even phonetic and phonological features, from Southern Italian, Sicilian, and English. It is about 60% Arabic, 40% Romance.
Laguage Tree is as follows:
Afro-Asiatic (Large Group Like Indo-Europian)
-->Semitic
---->Central Semitic
------>South Central Semitic
-------->Arabic
---------->Maltese
So far I have surmised that Maltese be in a 4-point thin round-box with Arabic (like German and Yiddish; currently, Arabic shares 4-points with no other laguage), which would put it in the same 3-point Thick round-box as Arabic and Persian, and in the same 2-point thin box as Arabic and Hebrew. It would NOT be in the same 1-point Thick box as the rest of the Indo-Europian laguages, but WOULD be in the same Thick box as Arabic, Hebrew, Berber, and Hausa (all part of the Afro-Asiatic language group).
What I am not sure is how to connect it to Sicilian. I would guess that Sicilian would be part of the 3-point Thick round-box as Italian, Sardinian, and Rumanian (Sicilian is as different from Italian as Sardinian - i.e., not a dialect of Italian as often belived). I thought prehaps that much as there is an astrix between Yidish and Hebrew (indicating a 4-point relation) there may be something simalar with Maltese and Sicilian.
That was our best guess ... any thoughts Mr. Long?
