  1. Re: Help with a build: Binding a spirit

Another option depending on what you want is a suppress summon. Probably bought with 0-end: you stab the spirit, it gets sucked into the dagger untill it is released. Then if you are able to use the dagger to do other things while the spirit is bound in it you can just link those powers to the suppress.

  2. Re: My First Game of Champions!

If you wanted the first roleplaying game I was in that would be when I was 5 or 6 and had borrowed dads D&D books and ran my sister through a very childish version of the game my dad was running.

I am still playing my first game of champions, however I was curious enough about the system to generate a character beforehand. I believe my fist session was like:

Me: Bored, hey what are you guys playing?

    Weldun: Explains the setting

Me: Hey could I join in, I have a character concept that could fit with only a bit of tweaking.

    Sundog (GM): Sure.

And that is how Orca came about.

  3. Re: Quote of the Week from my gaming group...

From a DND game last week.

GM: alright you made your knowledge checks, your fighting a vampire.

    Both Priests: Ah crap!

My character (playing a scout): don't worry I have over 60 wooden stakes here (pointing to arrows).

Later as the vampire tries to flee by joining a swarm of bats and the cleric makes a spectacular Greater turn undead check.

GM (ooc): Damn it you broke my adventure.:eg:

GM: As one of the bats explodes all this equipment starts raining down, including the sword you were looking for as it is swearing and lands hilt deep in the ground.

(I forgot precisly what people said but this is close enough)

  4. Re: WWYCD: Nestleader: The Game

Avatar: Would probably play the game for a bit of fun but totally miss any connection to VIPER and would probably be recorded as having a particularly low score for leadership qualities. (That might change when he gets older)

Orca: Would probably never play the game as he is not one for computers and computer games can't give him as much sensory stimulation as they give us normal people. :)

  5. Re: WWCYD: Lethal Force is Authorized

Avatar: After one city has been razed will look over the devastation and start melting their spaceships.

Orca: Will most likely be trying to protect people. He only has the normal reluctance to kill but will consider the aliens just as bad as his father.

  6. Re: How to start a War

    My 2 cents.

The judge entity: Adjudicator, Arbiter, heck you could even call it the Jury as it is an entity that judges but doesn't make the ruling.

It might even be a multifaceted entity, the part the PC's get to know is the Jury while the Judge is always watching the proceedings. That way the PC's can have this nice warm fuzzy relationship with it while not actually interfering with the proceedings.

As for the forces of magic call them something like: The Spectrum or even The Circle, something which implies a unification of differing forces.

The Technocratic aliens, maybe: The co-operative, what could be less threatning than co-operation?

Anyway as I said my 2 cents

  7. Re: Aliens

Off the top of my head, Avatar would be available for comment and the team has not yet told him that reporters are not good to be around.

As for alien supervillains while they are serving jail time they might as well talk to someone.

  8. Re: WWYCD: We hope you're feeling better now

Avatar of the sun: Go comletely bonkers because the only people he really knows is his team mates, will worry about the other him and how the hell he became something he wasn't, blast his doppleganger with several questions just out of curiosity. Has no family to turn to, might realize that he was in a different dimension and try to fix it.

Orca: Finds where VITAS is fuming and slap him silly for touching that keystone (or whatever it is called), then maybe work out how to get out of this god damned alternate universe thing.

  9. Hi Steve,

I am mildly confused with using clinging while desolidified.

Desolidification (pg 147) states that you can use "force of will" to walk on the ground, climb a cliff etc and that you can use movement powers normally.

My confusion comes in with clinging (pg 143) because it is not a classified as a movement power but it allows you to use your normal movement as if the surface you are clinging to is level?

Do I still have to buy affects physical world for my clinging?

Any advice you have on this subject will be useful

  10. Re: BOECV for STR

I'm with Steve, which shouldn't come as a shock, but I'll go so as to ask: what is the effect you're looking for? Then we can help you reason from that effect and create the power correctly.
The character concept was a mentalist who's powers were based upon affecting peoples dreams; one of his powers was that whenever he went to sleep he became a psychic manefestation of his subconcious (represented by multiform). the main theme of this characters multiform was that although it was physical it was still a psychic projection. The main reason I thought about BOECV for STR was so that the characters abilites were coming more out of his sense of self (ego) than his physical ability (which was a projection of his ego). That being said I didn't go with the BOECV construct as it was a bit too strange. (then again strange isn't bad).

Back in the early 80's I ran a villian with BOECV strength...it was totally broken....so I trashed the concept. I'd recomend looking real close before going in that direction...."I grab Grond and squeeze for 6D6 vs Ego def" "Grond will break out of your grip!" "Cool, what is Grondilockes' Ego?" "Arrrgh!"....I'm just sayin...
Grond Tries to escape your grab (roll dice) did you put does body on your STR? no Grond escapes.

Sounds like you are looking for using alternative targeting CVs, something that is detailed in The Ultimate Mentalist.
A book I do not have so could you "quote" how this works? It might of been what I was looking for when building this character.

I'm not sure how ECV based strength is supposed to work, but if you are looking for a 'psychic knife effect' then perhaps you could look at AVLD (mental defence) - you use it like a normal knife but the damage that it does is only stopped by mental defences.
I have a personal problem with AVLD in that I think it is overpriced. Here is my reasoning:

NND: Have 1 common thing stop this or several uncommon things which stop this, these do not even have to be defense powers for +1.

BOECV: Power gains Line of Sight if ranged, use ECV instead of OCV and at your option AVLD: Mental Defence all for +1.

AVLD: Works versus an "exotic" defence +1 1/2, if defence is just restricted version of normal defence +3/4.

Admittedly I can see why they are at least +1 they do pack a large punch, and power/mental/flash defense are not that common, AVLD to me just seems like another mechanic change, one which allows you to alter which type of defence the power applies to instead of allowing you to apply the power versus something which is not normally classified as a defence.

  11. Hi

I was playing with a character idea a while ago and I was wondering what would be the exact effects of Based on ego combat value as a naked advantage for STR?

From what I can tell from reading the advantage on pg. 253 it primarily means that I use my ECV for my attacks, and can possibly modify the defence that it applies to but could only cause stun damage while using this option.

Is my understanding correct? and is there some effect of doing this that I may have overlooked?

  12. Hi guys

I'm trying to come up with a character concept and I need a small amount of help.

The character is a "person" who is made out of pure Diamond. Unfortunately I don't know how much weight a man sized piece of diamond would weigh.

    Any help would be appreciated.:)

  13. Re: Help with a power write up

    Just my 2 cents.

1: From what I understand uncontrolled does not require it to be your phase to work.

2: to simulate a lot of luck powers without stating up all of the try this:

Xpt VPP +2 Cosmic, Limited Class (luck, -1/4), No Concious Controll (-2).

that way whenever you need something lucky to happen it can. Might want to have it require a luck roll insted of being fully cosmic, but essentially you can have your rules for handwaving what his luck can do. :)

  14. Re: Timestop Difficulties

The power is an Entangle based on ECV. It's meant to simulate freezing the individual in time. Now ECV really isn't much better than versus plain ol' STR for this effect, but we needed something and this was pre-USPDB I and II.

Another option is to change how the power works. At the moment the information here indicates that it doesn't stop the person in time, it just slows down their mental processes to the point that they don't percieve the passing of time. When I have fiddled with the idea of any sort of "stasis field" effect I always seem to head back to temporal extradimensional movement.

    as an example: Extra Dimensional movement 12 seconds (1 turn) forward in time, Usable As Attack (+1), Ranged (+1/2); 102 active;

Defences are: LS: Does Not Age, Any Time based power, anything else you can think of that would be appropriate.

Admittedly this method has the potential to be overpowering, but While the Villain is unable to act he is also unable to be harmed. And although inconvienienced will never necessarily be removed from the fight entirely. Plus if the target has one of the "reasonably common defences" he is immune period to the power. Also if you want other people to be able to free a "trapped" person then add physical manefestation as a limitation.

  15. Re: Confessions of an Online GM

Yeah, I'm totally insecure about this. First-time online GM and all. :o

It is ok to be insecure, I remember the first time I officially DM'd. Things went well and most of the players enjoyed it. But all throughout I was nervous that I was doing something badly. Especially since it was DND and the game evolved into the save or die levels (Poor Weldun).

  16. Re: Variable Summon

I am wondering why you need to alter or add to the system?

    Summon 500pt Demons/Astral Creatures, x64 Creatures (+30), Expanded Class (+1/2), Slavishly devoted (+1), (325 active)

5 Shot Autofire on up to 325 active points of summon (162 Active), Each "shot" removes 100 total points from each summon (-1) 81 real

May need to slide the limitation on the autofire, but it should work and if you are doing these things on the level of of Xellos's boss you don't really need to worry about points:)

  17. Re: Completely rearranging Adjustment powers -

How would you do a power similar to this:

    1d6 Aid, +24 maximum effect, Continuous (+1), 4 stats simultaneously (+1), Decreased fade rate (1/minute, +1/4); 71 Active; Self only(-1/2), Incantations (-1/4), Guestures (-1/4), Costs END to activate (-1/4), x4 END (-1 1/2), Full Phase to activate (-1/4) END: 28, Real cost: 18.

Admittedly it is not a common model of the power, but it is still legal in the current rules.

  18. Re: Modeling An anti-magic Barrier

xd6 Dispel all Magic simultaneously (+2), Continuous (+1), AOE (2 hexes +3/4), Cumulative (x4 points +1), personal immunity (+1/4) = 18 pts per dice of dispel, Ablative (loses 5 active points of power whenever hit, -1 [pg 116 defence powers]), Full phase to activate (-1/4), Side effect -3 to all spellcasting checks on spells cast through the barrier (-1/2), 6.5 real points per dice of dispel so far,

cumulative to represent that multiple people may add to the barrier (might rework cumulative to say that others may add to the barrier instead of standard effects at +1/2 but my first assumption is no funky), the only problem is that if a spell is powerful enough to bypass the dispel it is unaffected. You might want to lace a limitation saying that if a spell breaks through the barrier then the barrier automatically deactivates.

Not sure if this suggestion is helpful but I hope you find it useful.

Why do I wish to join/what do I hope for?

I am getting tired of the military keeping an eye on me to ensure that i do not attack a city or somesuch, also my baby sister has terrified most of the babysitter agencies in New York and they refuse to work for me. I am personally hoping that your childcare faciliteis are accomodating.

Have I ever been on a supervillan team before?

No I have never been on a supervillan team before.

Are you a Superhero or other agent trying to infiltrate us?

    How may we contact you?

I will be summoning the PR man you hired every day for the next 42 days to give me my answer.

    Any additional Information?

I have a baby sister that I mentioned earlier, you will need to provide suitable facilities for her care. Also if you would get the military off my back it would be a help.

  20. Re: Strange But Useful Powers.

    Summon Taxi:

The character, with but a sharp whistle and an upraised arm, is able to summon a 50-point vehicle complete with skilled driver/pilot (50-point character). The vehicle appears seemingly from nowhere and is capable of taking the summoner from where he is to where he's going, within the limits of the point constraints.

A variation I did for one of my characters was Summon Servants:

Summon up to 16, 75 pt normals, Any normal (+1/2)

So it wasn't game breaking I put OAF "calling card", unfortunately this meant that the character was mostly able to summon door to door salesmen.

  21. Re: How much damage do I do?

Sorry if this is mundane and obvious, but these adding DCs rules are conflunding me.

My character has a 30 STR and the the following attack (superheroic game):

Claws: 1 1/2d6 HKa, 1/2 END Cost (31 AP), Reduced Penetration

Then, I have Martial Arts with a Martial Strike (+2 DCs) and an Offensive Strike (+4 DCs), with WE: Use Martial Arts with Claws.

So how much damage do I do here? Thanks!

If my math is right approximately 3d6+1, 4 damage classes from STR (since with the advantage you need 6.25 points of STR for each dice), +1 Damage class from martial strike or offensive strike (DC's are halved for a killing attack.) also since you have a 5 Damage class attack you may only ever add 5 damage classes to the attack, this is why even with offensive strike you are only adding 1 damage class.

    Hope this helps :)
