  1. Re: And 6e print books start to arrive

I live in NJ too and I got mine, not to rub it in or anything but I am sure yours will be to you shortly, Ellis.

Glad to here you got your books Karma.

    Red

Hopefully so. I'm not actually sure who all to talk to at Hero Games if my books don't come. Worse comes to worst, I can call my credit card company and have the charges reversed.

  2. Re: End of beta thoughts.

I'm one of the folks who is sorely disappointed. I guess if I hadn't been there for the pre-archetype CoH stuff, and hadn't played solid CoH for 5+ years, Champions Online would seem nice to me.

Despite some of the nice features, I can't get past the feeling that Cryptic is serving me twice-baked leftovers without bothering to spice it up. I also don't like the "virtual shards"; I've gotten used to a seamless world, which is like 2005 technology at this point. The 4th Wall is broken constantly for me, so there goes any immersion I might have for my RP.

That said, it will probably succeed as a niche action game for those who just want to get on and kill stuff in a fast-paced way.

  3. Re: MMO already bringing in new Hero players...

We have definitely noticed increased website traffic and use of the Online Store. Hopefully these trends will continue' date=' and even intensify.[/quote']

Excellent news. I've played since 1989, and love the system and supplements. When I mention it to people on MMOs, they never heard of it or they grouse about the math. Glad to see Cryptic's MMO will be pulling some interest into a great system. :)

  4. Occam's Razor

This will probably annoy the overthinkers, but what you want is:

For the swinging: Swinging, OIF (if you're using comic book Spidey and not movie Spidey), Special Effect: Webs.

For catching crooks just like flies: Entangle

Spiderman never had personal immunity to it. He's been caught in his own webs on occassion. But he made them so he could break out. This is why guys like Wonder Man and The Hulk just shrug it off.

You don't need Trigger. You're'using an action' when you do it.

This is, of course, only the way I do it. :D

  5. I had actually read Digital #5, but 'threw it out' by accident, and didn't feel like re-buying it. Probably I wasn't impressed with optional entangles that weren't STR or EGO, since most of the FRED advantages are for those.

The AVLD idea sounds good, but he hasn't yet come up with a better justification, other than 'People do what my character wants because he has a 60 PRE.' (which I'm not sure I'm allowing either. Heck, with that many dice of PRE attack, who needs an entangle?)

Thanks for all the advice everyone. :)

  6. In my campaign, I actually have cases (some that happened during play, and others just made up), but it helps, so the players and characters have an idea of the law.

    There's:

United States v. Fireball, P-12 U.S 1434 (1965). Use of paranormal weaponry, whether created or innate, against obvious non-paranormals, is unlawful, and constitutes Murder One charges and penalties, even when accidental.

*Translation: A paranormal using high force against a normal is a greater crime than against another paranormal.

However, what you're describing (the unintentional murder of a costumed villain) would fall under:

Hydraman v. Fuschia Frenzy, P-19 U.S. 154 (1972). Costumed vigilantes are exempt from the protection of the law, and are considered to have no rights for purposes of lawsuit.

"Volenti non fit injuria," If one knows and comprehends danger and willingly exposes themself to it, they may not recover damages in court."

*Translation: Masked and brightly costumed, non-registered paranormals may not seek compensatory or punitive damages if their injuries are brought about from such activities as patrolling the city, and fighting crime without police powers.

Now, it's a little late for your TT campaign, but you could have this case become a precedent. Just a thought. :)

  7. Wow! I'm humbled at the responses and glad for the reply by Steve Long, too.

I'm probably going to have to sit down with the player and go over what his expectations for the character's abilities are.

My real main concerns are the Secret ID breaking, and the Occam's Razor of having this versus using Mind Scan. If we can come to an agreement on those, I could probably allow the power.

  8. I have a player who insists that his mentalist MUST have the following:

Detect Minds (Mental Group), 0 Phase Sense, Ranged, Discriminatory, Analyze, 360 Degree Sense, Targetting

The PC has Mind Scan, and I told him to use that, rather than this, since he seems to be mimicking Mind Scan, except that 'Detect Minds' uses no END and doesn't waste a phase. It requires PER and is reduced by Range, but also means he can't be attacked back through it.

    Should I allow it?

Should I make him choose either the Mind Scan -or- the Detect, but not both?

  9. Combat Monsters don't work all that well in a MUSH setting, simply because the MUSH runs 24/7 and even the most active MUSH staff and the best players can't keep up combat the whole time. Peoples' schedules vary, etc.

From my experiences on ChampionsMUSH, and on other MUSHes, the best thing to play is a character who has or is part of a business where it beings other characters to him. Private Detective, policeman, bar or restaurant owner, shopkeeper, special tailor.

It isn't for everyone, of course. I wish City of Heroes would be done, too.

  10. I'm just posting a little adder because I noticed a few people thinking that you can't socialize out of character online. On a MUSH, people can and do socialize and we even get the same "Peanut Gallery" of smart aleck comments during scenes and combats that were in TT. When not RPing, people hang out and chat a bit, and some of the people online have met in real life at various gaming conventions.

That's not to say MUSHing is for you. It may not be. But there's as much, if not more, comeraderie as in tabletop gaming. :D

  11. I became very ill and couldn't go to Tabletop gaming, so I do Hero System online. I don't like PBeM, since you lose the "real time" feel, so I joined the 2 MUSHes that use Hero System.

ChampionsMUSH is ok, and I was there 3 years and there was actually a lot of socializing, just like in person. But typing well is a plus. They still use 4th Ed.

The new one uses 5th Ed and is doing pretty well, so far.

Scheduling isn't quite as bad as PBeM, since a lot of times we wait for a good amount of folks, and then do stuff. But nothing is like the in-person.

However, since I'm housebound, this is a really good alternative.

  12. It's a really cool idea, but you may want to not use some of the slang you have in there (Ace, Deuce, Joker), since it's part of Wild Cards, and in the event you publish it, that could be a problem.

But a special school for mutant kids is a nice idea. :)

  13. Love em and leave em

This happened while they were investigating, and managed to get way off track. The PC with Shrinking was about 3" tall and sneaking through the unsuspecting suburban family's home, when he came upon the young boy's bedroom. He failed his stealth. The little boy made his PER, cried out "Someone got me a Altura doll??!! Cool!!"

The character realized he'd been spotted and froze in place, allowing the kid to grab him and carry him around. The kid sneaked into his sister's room and was about to start abusing her Barbie doll, when his mother called him to eat. He tossed our hero and Barbie onto the bed in Barbie's "house" and ran to eat.

After waiting til the kid was gone, Altura got up, then told Barbie, "I'll call you."

The rest of our group was in stitches. :)

  14. Duplicated Foo

Wow, no posts. I did a "search", since the FAQ here is Unhelpful about what you need. The closest I could find is a Duplication is Broken thread.

    http://www.herogames.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=885&highlight=duplication

This thread is also not what you need, since the House Rule isn't going to suddenly decide Shapeshift or Summon is the Power.

(Hey! You can use Transform: Self to many selves.) :D
