  1. Re: Campaign Styles

Portable cribs. You may think I jest, but that's what we all did 15 years ago and my kid grew up just fine. And, she's a gamer!

It only works if the people you play with like and/or tolerate kids. You may need to switch gaming locations to a house that's been child-proofed later on.

Congratulations on the new DNPC, by the way.

As far as PBEM, I haven't done that in years. In fact, back then it was plain old PBM. My GM and I often take care of in-character stuff that would bog down the games via email. Since it's just the two of us, though, the turnaround time is not a problem.

  2. I want to write up a Flying Dutchman style ship--maybe something like O'Brien's HMS Surprise or a 17th C. pirate ship. I know how to add in the powers and such for the other aspects, but what about base specs?

I can't find info on sailing ships anywhere in either my Champs or Pulp Hero books. Does Ultimate Vehicle have this info or maybe something in FH?

  3. Re: Hair Tricks?

Has anyone been in my mind lately? I emailed my GM yesterday to talk about a teen hero concept that had *gasp* living hair!

I'll work in MA for the hair and possibly some autofire or rapidfire attacks. I haven't written her up yet. It's just freaky that this subject came up. *shakes head*

  4. Re: Help! I'm stuck in a disad rut!

I liked the disad I came up with for my kid's Teen Champs character. Nothing special taken separately, but fun when put together. She has an obnoxious Draco Malfoy type boy at her character's school who hates her in her secret ID and is always following her around, planning to get her in trouble, etc. That comes to a hunted. The same character is enamored with her super ID (a kirin) and is basically starstruck. He always shows up when the kirin comes out and gets himself into several dangerous situations. Because of the character's protective instincts, her hunted is also her DNPC.

  5. Re: Champions Assemble!

Cyclone has a mindlink with all SHRED members, so that's easy enough. 'Course, the team was on the lam for 5 years, so we were together most of that time anyway.

*G* I'm not sure how Team Fury does it. Several members work for the team leader in their secret identities. I have a member who is only peripheral, and she gets called in when her specialty is needed. I will have to ask how we do this, preferably when the GM isn't around! We have little ear radio thingummies for when we're actually on a mission.

  6. You see them in comics all the time--the guy with the medium STR and some sort of EB or other nonbrick power or lots of skills. Where the average brick is a STR 70, the JOAT might be a 35. Where your normal blaster has 14d6, he might have 9d6. He can hurt the average agent, but can he really take on a supervillian?

I love the idea of a super that's "super" in all areas, but how effective is he in gameplay? Can he be effective without buying lots of combat skill levels? I haven't played one (or seen one) myself so thought I'd throw the question out. Maybe some of you long-time GMs/players have used this type of character and can satisfy my curiousity. :)

  7. Re: Pulp Hero, after looking it over

My copy came in the mail yesterday, and I already love it! PH has my vote for next year's awards hands-down. Great artwork, excellent writing, wonderful sections on history of the period and important people. I could go on and on, but anyone who has it already knows. If you don't have it yet--get thee to your local gaming shop or the Online Store and get a copy already!

I was worried about maintaining a pulp feel in my game. A fellow player told me about a Justice, Inc. game he played in several years ago that was downright deadly to PCs--not the pulp feel I was looking for at all. The book admirably supplies new skills/talents to truly give your characters that pulp feel.

I especially like the timeline. I plan on photocopying it for my own use and inserting my "pulp" history into it so I know exactly how everything falls together.

  8. Re: I don't quite grok the Multiform rules.

If they have lots of points in common' date=' maybe the Multiform construct is not the most appropriate approach. OIHID might be an option, or perhaps even a large Multipower, with slots for each of your many alternate forms.[/quote']

I'm glad you mentioned OIHID (though I hope we don't get another OIHID discussion!). If I have a PC that started out at 375 pts (175 in CPs and 200 in disads) that was originally written as OIHID. They share some skills, but the "normal" form is a normal, no powers. Should the PC be rewritten as a multiform? If so, what would be the point breaks. I have never understood how it works either. *G* Which explains why I haven't re-written the PC!

  9. Re: The Forumverse name game

The experiment went horribly wrong. He decided to work late one night at the university lab. Breakthrough was close. He could taste it. The bio nanites would create a better world for the handicapped--heal them. The next generation would MS, ALS and maybe alzheimer's.

If only he could control their growth rate. The Rhesus from the latest experiment had survived for seven months before the nanites completely replaced its biological cell structure with machine pathways.

It was all a matter of control .... His calculations indicated a higher level of irradiation required. The math worked out. He had to prove his theory before the faculty cancelled his research. The good of mankind demanded it.

That was the plan. He hadn't calculated the sudden surge of power that accelerated the biomechanical merge. Nor had he anticipated his enhance speed and strength, his metallic skin.

It was a small price to pay for good. As Manchine he would continue to help the world, albeit on a more personal level.

  10. Re: King Kong Trailer Online

One of Roger Ebert's bugaboos about things like the Godzilla movies was "size constancy". Once you have established the size of a creature, it should not change unless there is a story reason for it to grow or shrink.

Since we only got about threre shots of Kong, is it just me or did he appear to be three different sizes?

I didn't notice three, but when I saw Kong next to the car (in New York) I said to myself "He's too small. Looks like Mighty Joe Young." Then later they show him facing off a T Rex and he's huge.

Surely it can't be any worse than the 1980s remake. *shudder*

  11. Re: What are some interesting disadvantages you have used?

My daughter just created a teen hero PC with a hunted in her non-super form (though she's a pretty fearsome martial artist)--a boy from her school who hates her. Think Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter series. This same Hunted is her DNPC in her hero form. The boy is also a supers fanboy, especially crazy about her PC.

  12. Re: PULP HERO -- What Do *You* Want To See?

in my experience in reading pulps' date=' and playing pulp it is more about the verbs and adjectives then the nouns.[/quote']

The first time I saw King Kong I was struck when Carl Denhem said "swell" about every other sentence. No one says swell anymore (unless speaking of injuries!).

  13. Re: Pulp Reading

"Bride of the Rat God" by Barbara Hambly (Darwath Trilogy, Dragonsbane) takes place in Hollywood of the mid-1920s and involves an ancient Chinese evil and the silver screen.

  14. Re: I Give Up!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bah! You beat me by 3 minutes while I was typing and double checking the rules!

 It probably says something about us that we both went straight to the cheese ... erm the greatest concentration of it, anyway.

  15. Re: I Give Up!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyway, I am almost sure he was relying on flying by (but not actually doing a move by) on his foes and doing a whopping 39d6 "side effect" to them.

That's my thought. And he won't even have to make an "attack" roll for the side effect to work. Sheesh.

  16. Re: I Give Up!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Here's his "attack" power:

Side Effect occurs automatically whenever Power is used (Side Effect only affects the environment near the character; Side effect of speed cause damage. I don't think he's even planning on attacking anyone, just running past them (not move by).

He's going to really need that 40 Dex. Yeah, right.

  17. Re: Pulp Reading

The Amelia Peabody series of mysteries by Elizabeth Peters start out in late Victorian and are currently in WWI. Anyone who reads them will recognize a LOT of elements from The Mummy movies.

The Last Camel Died at Noon actually is EP's nod to the H. Rider Haggard novels, complete with a lost civilization. The latter books in the series feature the protaganist's son, who acts as a British Spy against the Germans and Turks.

  18. Re: Pulp Film Recommendations

Oh my gosh! I was searching for photos for another thread and found some from The Lost Horizon! How could I have forgotten the original Xanadu film?

Mighty Joe Young (original) and the remake wasn't half bad either.

The original Batman serials and the original Superman serials

Alan Quartermain & the Lost City of Gold -- not great but definitely pulp

    Iron Giant

You know, The Aviator chronicles someone who contributed a LOT to aircraft of the era. Didn't HH invent the rocket pack?

The Goonies (modern era, but secret treasure, pirates, caves)

    Dick Tracey

    Charlie Chan

Lawrence of Arabia (unless WWI is considered too early)

    Mr. Moto

  19. Re: "24" Challenge

not to say that you have more research to do...but I have seen all every season...and frankly Jack Bauer is too cool to sum up with one season...Id say that to be fair to Jack you should watch all seasons and then write up his character. Jack does some really interesting things past the first season.

He sure does! "I'll need a hacksaw" is one of my favorite lines.

His personality has changed (who can blame him) over the seasons. He must have some regeneration when you consider the latter part of Season 2.

Let's not forget his amazing never-need-to-go-to-the-bathroom power.

Kim should be a 150 pt. disad. ;-)

  20. Re: This week on "Champions"...

S.H.R.E.D. - (Fridays, 7:00 EST/6:00 CST) - After battling Soggoths and Moonbeasts and being kidnapped by otherworldly sailors, Afreet at last confronts the errant Corsair, now captain of the flying ship Cormorant. Meanwhile the rest of Team SHRED track Afreet's kidnappers through the Dreamlands to the Cormorant. Equinox learns that Sokura and his father may be one and the same! Cyclone and Matrix sort through Corsair's memories while Nonetu and Renegade try to prevent collateral damage when Claymore suffers a Vietnam flashback when The Masters attack the Cormorant.
