Images (sound) question

Can Sound based images be percieved outside of the area they are bought to affect? If so, why buy a larger area?

 

can some sort of adder be employed to reduce the range modifier (like telescopic, only to make things audible at a distance instead of hear things at a distance)

5E 121 discusses the fact that all characters within Line Of Sight (or in this case, "Line Of Hearing," I suppose) can perceive an Image. Increasing the size of an Image allows a character to create an Image that's sufficiently "large" to properly simulate what the Image depicts. Just like a character can't fit the Image of a 60"-wide building into a 1" radius, it's possible that some sounds need sufficient size to achieve the proper "volume" or to make it seem like they're not coming from one particular 1" area.

 

To make an Image easier to perceive, buy PER Roll modifiers as positives rather than negatives, as discussed on 5E 122.
