In my own campaign world, we had a PC hero team called The Capitol Patrol; members included The Strongman (looked like a turn-of-the-century circus strongman, complete with shaved head and handlebar mustache), the mutant ice elemental Blizzard, the master planner Tactician, and the alien energy projector Stargazer. I think the NPC hero team Executive Sanction (from the "Allies" sourcebook) also made an appearance at one point; their roster included Panacea (a super-human doctor with healing powers), Traveller (the team's long-range movement specialist), and Stuart White (a.k.a. The Accountant, a reluctant hero with psionic powers). In addition, retired metahuman Walter Kurtzman (alias Silver Age hero "The Amazing Doctor Atomic") is currently serving in the U.S. Senate, representing the great state of Texas....
