Mind Scan Damage Shield Followup Revisited

Dust Raven

Question

Well' date=' it's like any other Mental Damage Shield. As long as "mental contact" is maintained, the Damage Shield effect continues. For an Ego Attack, that's a momentary mental contact -- an attack with an Instant Power -- so the effect only lasts for that Phase. If a continuing-effect Mental Power (a Constant attack) were used, the Damage Shield effect would last as long as the attack was in use.[/quote']

FREd lists Telepethy and such as Instant.

Would the continuinng-effect Powers still count as "touching" until the EGO Roll was made?

This leads me to wonder something else... A sucessful attack roll is all that's needed to be affected by a Damage Shield. This would mean that an attack using Telepathy that hits the target, but doesn't affect him would still trigger the Shield. It would only last a single Phase in this case. Correct?

Re: Mind Scan Damage Shield Followup Revisited

Yes, they're Instant, but they have a continuing effect. As long as the character using a continuing-effect Mental Power maintains contact -- he keeps up telepathic communication, he feeds END to the power, or the like -- he's going to keep suffering from the Damage Shield. If it's just one attack with no contact maintained, then the attacker's obviously only going to suffer the Shield's effects that one Phase.

Re: the second point, yes, that's correct. It's no different, really, than a physical attack that hits a character and thus triggers a Damage Shield, but doesn't do damage to the character because of his defenses.
