One can only presume it is a native of Zamoria, although it may be an alchemical creation or may have been summoned from the southern jungles. Personality/Motivation: Typical animal motivations. The Hyborean giant spider possesses nearly human-level cunning, and can make quite an effective guardian. Powers/Tactics: The Hyborean giant spider is an ambush predator. It tends to hide itself, and then drop silently down on prey to deliver a highly-venomous bite (capable of killing a large man in a few seconds). If its target manages to dodge the initial attack, the spider will then try and trap its foe in its webs, either by flinging sticky lengths of webbing, or by laying long lines of webbing across the area in order to box its foe in (the spider tends to drag lengths of webbing behind it, GM's might want to make this the SFX of creating slot 4). One trapped, the unfortunate will be wrapped up, bitten, and eventually drained. Appearance: The size of a pig, a Hyborean giant spider has eight "thick hairy legs" and a black "ogreish body." Its eyes have an evil glint, while its long fangs tend to clash together when it attacks. Designer's Notes: The Hyborean giant spider appeared in the Conan short-story The Tower of the Elephant. The spider killed the master thief Taurus with a single bite, and nearly did Conan in, until a hurled chest caught the spider dead center. As a side note, the spider is described as very, very fast, which is why I made its DEX and SPD equal to Conan's. The Sticky Webs Multipower is a mixture of generic giant spider abilities, and some elements taken from the story. Game Masters may want to make the first and second slot require more than one Charge to make the set up more "realistic," however, the spider showed the ability to throw around almost endless amounts of webbing. Eosin
Re: Creature: Hyborean Giant Spider That bugger is going to be the end f more than one PC.... The freakish DEX with a good SPD combo on top of a 6d6 RKA NND is bad juju waiting to happen. That doesn't mean that it does represent the character well, just that this ugly is a PC killer. Curufea
Re: Creature: Hyborean Giant Spider You just need to make sure you have sufficient red shirts to allow the PCs to come up with a plan of action before death I regularly allow my PCs to hire guards and mercenaries for this very reason. With its bite maxed at 1d6+1 with red pen, even 2 def leathers will often stop the bite, and 4 def will render a location immune to the venom. Even so, I'm with Curufea in that I tend to include lots of redshirts whenever I'm planning on running a particularily lethal scenario. The freakish DEX with a good SPD combo on top of a 6d6 RKA NND is bad juju waiting to happen. That doesn't mean that it does represent the character well' date=' just that this ugly is a PC killer.[/quote'] This represents the "worst case scenario" version of the spider. One that forced Conan to do nothing but Dodge of several Phases (perhaps a few minutes worth of Phases). Taurus the thief was as big (or bigger) than young Conan and died within moments. So yes, as is, it would kill 150-point PCs in droves. (Well, 4 anyway). On the other hand, the description of the bite in the story was of three small holes, so I felt the RP limitation was fitting. It did seem that the spider needed to hit bare skin.
