Re: World War II era: Dark Champions or Pulp Hero?

I was curious if anyone had ever run campaigns set in this time period, either for Pulp Hero or Dark Champions style stories. Which "style feel" did you use?

For examples of military stories, I would imagine the best known are Nick Fury and his Howling Commandoes (Marvel) or Sgt. Rock and Easy Company (DC).

However, there was also plenty to do for spybusters and vigilantes to do on the home front in America. The Batman was pretty busy, for example. Would his comic be an example of Dark Champions or Champions? Can you do Golden Age style Dark Champions, or is that a contradiction?

the CHAMPOINS rulebook has a section on that which seems to agree with my 50%PULP HERO50%DARK CHAMPIONS theory

WW2 games always felt less Pulp to me. Nazis are certainly a huge part of the Pulp mythos, but whenever I saw them in a situation that really resonated pulp to me, they were engaged in at most sabotage and subterfuge. The Nazis during WW2 felt more faceless and numerous. I dunno.

If your in a quandary about the type of game you'd like to run just outline your starting year, the current status of the war, point values and all the mechanical stuff without leading the players on at all and see what they make. The types of characters they make will determine how pulpy or gritty the game needs to be for them to fully realize their characters.

The Pulp Hero book is certainly helpful since it has much of the default equipment you'll be needing in it. Unless you can lay your hands on a fourth ed copy of Golden Age of Champions. Since GURPS came out with their 4th Ed you might be able to pick up a the core GURPS ww2 book or any of it's supplements for 3rd Edition cheap if your interested.
