McCoy
Re: Plasma Rocket! Re: Humans on Mars. It's not Either/Or. SOL lag was a serious problem in controlling Spirit and Opportunity. You give it a command, 40 minutes later you see how it interpreted it and carried it out. That's why it could only move a few meters a day. Use a Mars Semi-Direct model. Send uncrewed missions to set up an infrastructure, a nice radiation/shielded habitat and your return vehicle. Send your humans. They can only work outside about 4 hours a day, so most of the time they are in their radiation-shielded habitat operating Spirit-type telepresence probes IN REAL TIME, negligible speed of light lag. Save the 4 hours a day that the humans can be outside for things that the probes can't do, unanticipated situations, freeing a stuck probe, bringing a malfunctioning probe back inside to be repaired, simply putting the Mk I eyeballs on a situation that can't be what the probe seems to be saying it is.
