Ties among PCs

Recommended Posts

If two players are creating their characters together and decide to link them in some way, how can this best be simulated in the write=ups? Some examples:

The PCs are boyfriend/girlfriend before the campaign beings or are a married couple.

One PC is the parent of another.

One PC has an unreqited crush on another.

One PC is, under the law of the campaign world, the property of another.

One PC is the commander of a military unti and the other PC (perhaps all the other PCS) are under his command under the military table of organization, and have to follow his orders (but are free to interpret them to best get the job done).

The entire party consists of a family unit or extended family.

A few quick ideas, in order ...

1. In Love With (Other Character), mirrored, possibly Social Limitation: Married (not sure how big a lim this might be).

2. Protective of (Other Character) in a normal parent-child relationship.

3. An unmirrored In Love With (Other Character).

4. Social Limitation: pwned ... er, Owned/Slave.

5. The 'underling' PCs have Social Lim: Subject to Orders from (PC), whereas the PC may have Subject to Orders from his superiors.

6. Assuming a typical family relationship, Protective Of or Loyal To (name) Family could cover it.

rivalry is also possible

if they have been together a long-time you can buy mind scan, requires LOS and perception roll. This represents them being able to read each other and know what the other is thinking without talking.

So Partner A is talking to the official. Partner B across the room is watching, can see he is upset, knows the official must have just turned down the request, and knows to get to the door and be prepared for a fight.

Of course, not every relationship needs to translate into some sort of character stat.

Then how do you know how many dice to roll?

On a more serious note, the characters might also be;

  • childhood friends,
  • siblings separated long ago, and only recently reaquainted (which makes it plausible for them to not know EVERYTHING about eachother),
  • related through a marraige of their respective siblings (e.g., in-laws),
  • cow orkers (co-workers) irrespective of rivalry or lack thereof,
  • victims of the same blackmailer (Mr. Boddy?),
  • etc.
