Evil doubles from another dimension

A time honored classic (or dusty overused cliche) in superhero stories are the evil doubles from another world, usually an alternate history that is "reversed" from the character's homeworld: heroes are villains, villains are heroes (or at least likable). Many comic book characters have met their evil twins and some have entire "evil" worlds to worry about. Have you ever used this particular scenario in your games? How did it work out? Did you throw in wrinkles into the mix to make it interesting?

Re: Evil doubles from another dimension

We got transported to the Evil Twin world in one game. We figured out where we were pretty quickly, and all looked at each other knowing we would eventually face ourselves. We created alternate personas so we would not be so easily linked to our duplicates, and a battle plan for dealing with our Other Selves. It's amazing how easily you can win when you know how best to deploy your forces - I think they lost two of five members on Phase 12.

Re: Evil doubles from another dimension

In one game we met not our evil doubles per se, but rather our evil post-apoc selves from the future. One of the characters does something to cause the apoc and the rest of the team apparently ended up turning on him (probably for good reason). Our team consisted of the guy who would cause the problem and two others. Their team consisted of of one of our current team, one of our teams past character (who left and was replaced with another PC - same player, though). And then one NPC who had just been introduced to the PC who causes all the troubles. It caused us worry that one of the current team was shown as being present in the future verse, too. But we never got a clear answer as to why. And the PC character that caused all the troubles was assumed dead in the future verse but no body was ever found so when he (our version) showed up, it caused a lot of alarm. :)

In retrospect, it was way too believable that the Player in question might cause an apoc. And after the story arc ended it, it stayed with him so that he was always trying to figure out exactly how he would cause it (probably leading him to be so paranoid as to actually cause it! :)).

Anyway, that's my tidbit.

Sounds cool. "Corrupt/jaded/grizzled version from the dark future" is an interesting variant on the idea. Another I've seen (the Justice Lords from JLA come to mind) are not necessarily "evil" doubles but less ethical versions of the PCs. If the players are the Avengers or Justice League, these guys are the Authority.

Re: Evil doubles from another dimension

In a campaign long ago, the PC's figured out that they were younger good versions of the main bad guy team of the world. They were brought here from somewhere else by the teleporter villain from the other team because she knew they needed to be stopped but couldn't turn on the others, mostly due to the evil mentalist leader. Had to call the game early that night, they just sat there with there jaws on the floor as everything clicked into place that had happened to them since the beginning.
