5th Ed

Can anyone here tell me whether or not there is a big difference between 4th and 5th ed Champions? What has changed? Are the changes significant? Better? Worse? Would converting 4th ed characters over to 5th be much of a chore?

Just trying to get a little feedback before I decide to purchase the new books. Any replies are appreciated, thanks.

FREd is good for you

Most sweeping changes took place between 3rd and 4th edition. 5th edition is not that much different from 4th edition.

Most powers didn't change, they just got clarified. Each power now comes with a list of sample applications and typical advantages/limitations. Tricky or fuzzy powers like Change Environment, Multiform and adjustment powers got the most through revisions.

Personally, I think most changes are a definite improvement over 4th edition. I suggest you should at the very least get the 5th edition rulesbook (FREd) and give it a try.

Conversion from 4th to 5th is a breeze. Most powers' writeouts didn't change much, except for a few adjustment powers. Still, there's a whole new "attitude" to 5th edition characters. Standard superheroes are now 350 points (as opposed to 4th edition's 250 points), with more skills and "flavour" powers, much like characters from "late" 4th edition (Watchers of the Dragon for instance).

Game mechanics are largely unchanged, but there's a lot of new optional manovers.

To date the best summary of the changes from 4th to 5th Edition has been compiled by fellow board member TheEmerged on his website:

It includes interesting commentary on his evaluation of the changes.

On the whole I agree with previous comments: there are quite a few little changes to rules in 5E, but very few major changes. Conversion isn't hard at all. The big differences between 4E and 5E are that the various elements are more clearly defined (eliminating the conflicting interpretations of the past), they're generally better organized, and there a LOT more options giving you even greater flexibility. Even if you don't adopt the new ruleset wholesale, the added options alone make it worth the investment IMHO.
