  1. Re: I am hot!

Any stereotype can be considered insulting' date=' even to those who [b']do[/b] conform to it. Stereotypes have a use; it's the consideration of someone by those stereotypes, after they have shown themselves to be different, that interferes with perception. Stereotypes are a conceptual shortcut, a way of generating a framework for interaction before really getting to know someone; without them, one faces the paradox of being unable to interact with someone well enough to get to know them, precisely because one doesn't yet know them. Stereotypes are only useful as a temporary substitute, though.

I'm trying to read this as anything but tangential, and I'm failing.

You're talking about the temporary value of stereotypes in our interactions with others balanced with the need to move past them. This situation is about a person assuming a stereotypical role to elicit a targeted reaction from an audience.

If what you describe is different from when women condone it, why would that be? If some women are like that, don't you think they'd find it insulting to have their motivations reduced to "attention-getting"?

Perhaps. Are you saying we can't condemn behaviors if doing so insults the perpetrator?

Why separate the people you meet here by gender, when their gender is irrelevant to anything?

Do you think Siren would agree that gender is irrelevant? From her statements, she seems to expect to be treated a certain way because of her professed gender, and to celebrate that treatment. Given those statements, am I really the one "separating people I meet here by gender?" Rather, Siren appears to have aggressively separated herself.

Like most others, they are human, and those who react neither to gender nor the idea that someone on the boards might be "hot" in person will not be emotionally invested in it; when interacting with such people, Siren will be neither "trolling" nor "attention-getting", whether she intends to or not, for the simple reason that none of us will react any differently to her as a consequence.

The problem with this lovely scenario is that it places the burden of responsibility entirely on those subjected to inappropriate behavior, rather than on the person behaving inappropriately. It's an unreasonable expectation, especially when that behavior goes beyond "trolling" and "attention-getting" into the realm of the offensive.

  2. Re: I am hot!

This is exactly the attitude that keeps females out of RPGs.

    Nah.

If anything keeps females out of RPGs, it's insulting stereotypes of feminine behavior like the ones propagated in this thread.

Yeah I guess I am making the song just turn the Men into drooling mindless drons. Sort of like when I go clubbing in a mini-skirt. LOL

pretty grils get away with murder in these games LOL.

    I can't do expensive *POUT*

WOW ghost-angel, that is impressive! You ( as everyone else) is far my superior. LOL

Sorry guyz, I am too blonde to get that.

Thanks for the advice, guys usially DO give more slack to pretty girls. LOL

If you make it hot enough I can say a am "super anything chick" and guys love it. It's just how it works. LOL

But this is all just "being fun," right? See, that's the other major thing keeping women out of this hobby: guys condoning and encouraging this kind of attention-mongering.

Of course, that's *if* it's a girl. If it's not, it's some guy revealing his deep prejudices and other people defending him for it.

  3. Re: Evil Unleashed?

    .

I'd much prefer books stick to two categories: all or mostly new (it's okay to reprint a few appropriate characters if you've got maybe 70% new material) or entirely reprints of material from other books, grouped together for players' convenience (like the Equipment Guide or Combat Guide).

I'm pretty sure the Equipment Guide did have some new material in it, mostly dealing with poisons and chemical weapons.

  4. Re: Melee Reflection

    And that's another :)

    Thought so. :)

That example illustrates, though, that there may be two separate Ranged elements requiring two separate advantages/adders. One to deflect melee attacks made at a distance from the deflector (Inertia protects Redstone by deflecting Hyperion's blows), and another to reflect melee attacks to targets at a distance from the attacker (and then she redirects Hyperion's blows to hit Power Princess instead).

  5. Re: Melee Reflection

I think this sounds good' date=' Nexus. Only thing I might change IMC is that I might not allow Melee Reflection to impart Range, even with an Advantage. If the incoming attack isn't ranged, I don't think it should be possible to reflect it to a target who is at range.[/quote']

I'm reminded of the original Squadron Supreme series. In the last issue, Hyperion kept swinging his fists at Redstone...only to have Inertia keep redirecting the force of the blows to Power Princess, some distance away.

  6. Re: I am hot!

    Duh..... = me

The I am hot referred to my charicter I am making. OKt I get it.

Yeah I am on-line chatting a lot. Which is why I am tired at work. LOL

Don't worry, dude. We're all completely fooled.

  7. Re: Thoughts on the Speed Zone

You also, unlike normal XDM, have to pay END for it every Phase while in the Speed Zone.

And can you add Reduced Endurance to it?

Perhaps it will be easier to discuss the Speed Zone rules when you've actually read them. ;):D

If I could control how quickly DoJ shipped the book to me, I would, believe me. ;)

  8. Re: Thoughts on the Speed Zone

Wouldn't you be forced to continue moving at ultrafast speeds to maintain your presence in the Speed Zone?

I don't have the book, but SFX wouldn't necessarily dictate that. A speedster whose powers are based on time control might logically be able to take a nap while his opponents stand there frozen.

  9. Re: Thoughts on the Speed Zone

There are still plenty of things you could pull off using the Speed Zone other than attacking to make it a very cool and worthwhile ability to have, but more importantly a speedster that didnt have it would still be viable.

I haven't gotten the book yet, but I'm already imagining a Midnighter style character who "enters the Speed Zone" and makes Find Weakness and Analyze Style rolls against all his opponents before they can even act...

  10. Re: Draining SPD to Zero

If you want the target to be immune to external effects while frozen, then you're looking at either Extra-Dimensional Movement, Usable as Attack, with the special effect that he remains visible in this dimension as a frozen statue, or a combination of Desolidification, Usable as Attack, and an Affects Desolid Entangle.

  11. Re: Difficult Build: Armor that tranfers damage

The first suit of armor grants the wearer extra STUN and BODY equal to the STUN and BODYx2 of the person wearing the second suit (Built as +40 Body and +60 STUN, IIF Independent, with a -1/2 Limitation).

The second suit of armor "grants" the wearer a Susceptibility to the wearer of the first suit taking damage (built as a Major Transform, Triggered by putting the armor on, healed by removing the armor).

That's the easiest wasy to model this in game terms.

  12. Re: Who are the greatest (?) super villains?

Bullseye, Deadshot, Taskmaster...I tend to like the badguys on the lower end of the power scale, who nevertheless run with the big boys thanks to skill and style.

My favorite villain, however, is high, high up on the power scale: Thanos. He may have started as an imitation of Darkseid, but he's outgrown him. Thanos actually gets stuff done; Darkseid looks threatening, but then gets kakked by the Atom and Green Arrow or gets the tar beat out of him by Superman. He's all hat and no cattle, at least since Crisis.

  13. Re: Invisibility limitations

Isn't the "no movement" condition of Chameleon just moving from hex to hex? So the chameleon character can actually be jumping and jiving all he wants so long as it's all in the same hex. Granted' date=' that doesn't seem to be too logical, but the point is is thst I think Chameleon allows some motion, but not as much motion as it would take to move from hex to hex.[/quote']

This is more or less how I'd handle it. Movement within the hex can be done slowly and deliberately enough to stay Invisible. So changing facing or bringing an attack to bear wouldn't be a problem.

  14. Re: Champions Worlds

Champions campaigns can have a very distinctive flavor just as fantasy campaigns can. The Authority isn't the same as the X-Men, which isn't the same as JLA, which isn't even the same as Astro City.

You've carefully selected titles from different worlds for your examples, but I could just as easily note that X-Men is different than Fantastic Four and both are different than Deadpool or Sentry. Or that JLA is different than Batman and both are different than Swamp Thing or Green Lantern.

Having one world doesn't restrict you to one flavor of story. Any of these titles could be replicated in the CU with minimal alteration.

EDIT: I'd say the Authority is the only title in this post that posits a world significantly different from the CU.

  15. Re: Champions Worlds

Actually, that raises another interesting point. By tying themselves to an official and fairly-inclusive meta-history, DOJ has somewhat limited its ability to publish settings that don't fit into that meta-history. No alternate histories where the Nazis won WWII, or modern settings where superheroes don't exist, or SH settings that don't include the established alien races.

Meta-histories can be an asset in many ways, but they can also be a limitation.

They were planning on publishing Psychic Wars until Allen left, and that was completely outside the meta-setting. It's only a limit if they consciously decide to publish only within the meta-setting, and I don't think they've quite done that.

  16. Re: Champions Worlds

Where is the Authority-like Champions book letting you play high-powered heroes in a grim world watched over by a less then honorable UNTIL? Where is the Champions X book about a superhero world where the heroes are hunted by a corrupt government because they are considered non-human? Where is the New Millennium world where heroes can play modern characters but with a slightly different tint? Where are all the Champions worlds? Why are we limited to 1 Champions world but so many Fantasy and Star Hero worlds?

The various Fantasy and Star Hero "worlds" explore different genres of fantasy and sci-fi. The Champions worlds you suggest here are all one note variations of a typical iron age superhero universe. Apples and oranges.

  17. Re: Need help: Heat Metal

The trouble with the NND EB is it does damage even if the thing in the armour would not normally take damage from that level of heat: theoretically this could hurt a fire elemental wearing metal armour.

Oh it is complicated, isn't it?

Just adding LS: Immune to Heat to the list of defenses would solve that.
