  1. I agree with this thread. I was running a Fantasy HERO game and used something like this for mages who wanted to supercharge their powers. I can't recall the exact criteria. If memory serves they could boost with long term Magic Point loss, then boost even more with a drain to their power. I don't recall how recovery rate was determined.

I also recall that if the Magic Roll failed the same penalties applied if the Mage wanted the spell to work. Does this make sense? If the roll failed by one they could loose Long Term END. I can't recall the breakdown, but at some point the Mage could pay points for the spell would succeed. The opposite was true also. In order to increase power of a spell the Mage could loose Long Term END and at some point pay points. I don't recall how points returned.

Thanks for the conversation, and bringing memories to the surface.

  2. Re: Victorian / Western HERO Firearms

If HERO did publish another Western Hero, I doubt I could round up the players. Those times I have advertised at the local games I either get Deadlands fans or no reply at all. I've about this topic at length with other person interested in the genre in my group and we've come to the conclusion that people who like western films and books aren't the people that like to role play.

I know we won't have another Western Hero, but that doesn't mean I have to like it.

  3. Re: Victorian / Western HERO Firearms

I found The Knuckleduster Firearms Shop to be a good resource for weapons of that age. It lists reliability, damage, draw speed, rate of fire and concealment using a seven point scale. Under each entry is also some interesting trivia about the weapon, four range categories, and weapon quirks.

The only reason I haven't done a complete conversion to HERO is that none of the players or GMs I know would use the information.

  4. I have a character with a VPP. The team would like to find a specific person. How do I build it?

I was thinking of something like this:

Detect A Single Thing 13- (Unusual Group), Discriminatory, Increased Arc Of Perception (360 Degrees), Range, Targeting, Tracking, MegaScale (1" = 100,000 km; +1 1/2), Can Be Scaled Down 1" = 1km (+1/4) (91 Active Points)

We have tried the sleuthing route, looking at clues, following leads, threats, bribes, but we have no where to go.

  5. Re: What pre-5th Edition Hero books do you still use?

I have been using San Angelo, and its supplements. I like Mel City, but San Angelo has a different feel to the city. When I'm not running game I usually have a character that has emigrated from San Angelo to the campaign city.

I also use Western Hero, but not nearly as often as I would like. Oh, and not Western Hero with zombies and magic. No Deadlands Hero, thank you.

  6. Re: Sentinel Robots

First, I really respect those who wish to do the research, and the put the effort into the game that it deserves. But why try to reinvent the wheel, just pull out the Conquerors, Killers and Crooks and use one of the fine robots in that tome. Tweak it the way you want. Don't own it, dust off Star Hero or the Bestiary and adapt one of those.

  7. Re: uncontrolled

Uncontrolled can also be used for Powers that do not require END to use. In those cases the Power will last for a time defined by the GM or as the spell defines.

For example, if you define your spell Wings of the Duck (purchased with Reduced END 0) as lasting for a number of hours equal to the number that the Magic Roll was made plus one.

  8. 2) What process would be used to separate the compounds from the water, hydrogen, and methane, ect.?

Fractional Distillation. Distillation in which rectification is used to obtain product as nearly pure as possible. A part of the vapor is condensed and the resulting liquid contacted with more vapors, usually in a column with plates and packing. Also a distillation in which the product is collected in a series of separate components of similar boiling range. Problems can occur when trying to separate the alcohols from water, but if you can get to outer planets I am sure the distillation process would have advanced.

This process should separate the organic componets well. The inorganic material remaining could be used as mirconutriants in question one.

    3) How volatile is frozen methane? How much heat would be needed to ignite it say on the surface of Charon (very, very cold)?

Frozen methane is not volatile, but need clarification on the specific information requested.

  9. Let make clear what we are trying to a create.

We want a magic system in which we have a Rquired Skill Roll: PS: Divination to use the spells and then a Required Skill Roll: Deduction to interpret the results of the spell.

Since we are creating a magic system rather than a spell we have created flexibilty. Each spell can use different rules.

    Problem 1)

Use Uncontrolled for powers which normally have no duration. FHG has several good examples of this. If you do not feel comfortable with Uncontrolled then Charges may an easier method to keep track of time. Define each charge as ten minutes.

    Problem 2)

I would have each Unknown Skill spell represented by a VPP of related skills. Another way would be to build the spell as five point Skill Levels.

  10. Great Magic System!

I use a similar system to yours. The costs of the skills are slightly different, but otherwise the two systems are very close.

Here is mine (just the facts):

Magic skill base cost 9+(INT/5): 5 cp

+1 to magic skill to 18-: 3 cp

    +1 to magic skill >18-: 4 cp

+1 to one magic type to +5: 1 cp

    +1 to magic type >5: 2 cp

    Spell cost: Active Points/4 cp

Spells must include either a Focus or Side Effects, but not both.

  11. I agree austenandrews those aren't the sorts of thing I would normally require a player to buy either.

Why not just purchase some odd WFs (played with a young lady that used only kitchen tools) and a few PSL to duplicate the manuevers. Buy Acrobatics to 16-, a few different Environmental Movements, and some skill levels (or the Skill Master talent from FH pg 107).
